Love how you explain how the grip relese influences the rotation and therefore the flight of the javalin. I've never put those two together and that seems so fundamental. TX

What about the elbow movement? I've seen some throwers drive up and release behind the block leg. Also I hope you follow up on the pronation portion of this because I heard it protects your elbow.

Great video. My son is going to be running track in D2. The coach found out he plays baseball (Pitcher and outfielder) and want try him out at Javelin too. He said I could steal some points in a meet. Conference champ only threw it 175ft. I know it is a different throw but my son has a decent arm, able to throw a baseball 250ft. Can you do a video on converting from throw a baseball to a javelin.

How does a fork grip apply to the rotation of the javelin? I see how the javelin rotates with the american or finnish grip but how about the fork grip? Also, if it doesn't rotate with a fork grip should you use a lower rated javelin? I throw about 50 meters but have a 70 meter jav. Thanks!

What are the most common mistakes in javelin form that cause elbow pain?
@coachhalley Жыл бұрын
My top three would be… Throwing too tense instead of loose, a low bent elbow and throwing with the pinky side first instead of pronating the thumb.

Hello coach, While throwing, using Finnish grip, at point of release my index finger comes at top of grip displacing my middle finger. Can you please tell me about this.
@coachhalley7 ай бұрын
I recommend being more intentional with your release. Spend more time at practice working on shorter throws with your mind focused on how the javelin comes off your fingers. If your middle and index fingers are touching, you'll be able to use both middle and index finger to roll/spiral the javelin. If you need something artificial to keep the fingers together, use athletic tape (not too tight) just at the first segments of your index and middle finger (proximal phalanx). Sometimes just working on one specific skill for a bit will help you acquire it more quickly. Hope this helps.

How to throw a javelin through the point?
@sheehancf93 жыл бұрын
I saw another video about the different grips, made by Thomas Rohler. When he gave a tutorial about the Finnish grip, he set his index finger running straight up the javelin. I see you wrap the index finger around the javelin. Is this the version of the Finnish grip you prefer for whatever reason?
@coachhalley3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that his index finger changes position just before the throw to wrap around the javelin like mine. The index finger has to be out of the way or it will get bent backwards and not contribute to the torque during the release. My beginner javelin throwers often grip it incorrectly with their finger straight back and it really messes with the flight. Often raising the tail of the javelin…

@coachhalley11 ай бұрын
Use a Finnish grip. Turn your thumb down through the release. Grip the javelin a bit deeper in your hand so the javelin rolls longer off your fingers. Hopefully this helps.

What is the IDEAL launch angle degreess......? It matters at what degree angle a ball...object is trajectored/launched! Too low....35dgr will impact distance negative.....and too high 60dgr will also result in loss of distance. Commonly percieved the ideal degrees of launching is 45dgr.....is this true.....? Has sport science really investigated this? I believe the 45dgr angle is just a theory that originates mathematically because 45 is half of 90......0-45-90.......? But has this been thoroughly tested. Golf ball striking is similar.
@zs6004 жыл бұрын
It's less than 45°. Last world championship they were throwing between 35° and 39°. The more horizontal you throw the more speed can you develop.

@@Godisnotjesus1967 basically 45 degrees is the max distance for projectile motion, but the human body can exert a lot more force in the horizontal direction, so it is between 35 and 40 degrees. Since the center of mass of the Jav is towards the front, it is generally around 36-37 degrees

I wish i saw this video 45 years ago. :) How does rotation affect the flight and range compared to not giving the javelin a spin?
@coachhalley4 ай бұрын
Good question! I think it helps to stabilize the flight a bit more and maybe make it less susceptible to wind conditions. I’m curious about testing that idea though.
