My favorite part of this is that you are using people who aren't good at the mechanics you're trying to teach. I can't tell you how many "how to teach good whatever" videos I've watched where the coach is using someone who is already awesome at what they're teaching. You watch it and go oh yeah that's great, then you try and use it on someone who doesn't know how to do it yet and you are at a loss. Seeing you explain the concept, seeing the people struggle and watching all the OTHER little things you tell them trying to get them to get to the main goal is to me the most informative part of this series!

The “staying tall” tip is so overlooked. So many players hyperextend their backs which inhibits a proper stretch in the chest and contraction of the rhomboids to bring your arm back

that's the best explanation I've heard of the "thumb down" - as english, and as a billiards player I can see why you don't want to do that if you haven't mastered your basic straight on accuracy. Thank you sir! (can't wait to get my toes in the sand to try this stuff out).

Great explanations of WHY you are teaching technique the way you are. Even if I don’t agree with people’s concepts of why, I get more out of knowing the reason the drill or action is being performed one way over the other rather than mimicking for the sake of mimicking. With that said, I completely agree with how you’re teaching the cut shot over the thumb down/chop/slice/whatever you wanna call it method.

I really like the concept of hitting the left face of the ball on a cut shot! I've been taught thumb down and it just doesn't work for me because I turn my thumb down early and shoot it to the defender. This helps so much to hit the face of the ball rather than do thumb down and give away my shot. Thanks!

Quick question: This video recommends to not turn the thumb down to hit the cut shot. But the Mar 8 2021 video (Secrets....perfect ...cut shot), recommends to do exactly that, to turn the thumb down. So, what is the preferred biomechanics for a cut?
@betteratbeachvolleyball
@betteratbeachvolleyball 3 жыл бұрын
A real fan!!! There are different versions! For many the thumb down works. but for some it makes them do inefficient things with their hands and arms. the difference is very slight and is usually depending on how you got your feet to the ball. Some sets call for a thumb down. some, all of your fingers should stay pointing up. The most important part is what side of the ball you make contact with.

@@betteratbeachvolleyball Thanks for the reply! I'm more indoor than beach, and not really beyond intermediate level. But I've preferred the left side, thumb down. It works pretty well as a cut shot. I may give the straight up technique to see if it provides different/better results. I really love your guy's channel and the instructionals you give. Especially when you take the same kind of drill, and show it with players of varying degrees of skill. Thank you, guys! Much love from the Motor City : )

This isn't really good. You don't teach someone a new mechanic on their swing while doing the full run-jump-hit movement. A Full swing takes a Lot of coordination on its own. Then you add the fact that you have to run and jump before hitting, which makes it even more complicated. There are so many factors that are important to consider. You gotta break it down into many parts, and work on each part, slowly putting them together and adding more, until you can make a full swing. And what about the leg position while in the air? What about the Approach and the Jump? From what I can see, these people were beginners, and they were ''all over the place''. They won't be able to keep the little improvement they have made, because they weren't taught properly. And then they're gonna get into a match situation with other people, and everything is moving fast around them, and all they will be able to do is move the way their body is already used to, with all of their bad habits. I think it would have been much more beneficial for them to have a session where they can work on their approach mechanics, a session to work on the swing mechanics (no running or jumping), a session to try and merge the two together. If having multiple sessions on many days is not an option, then they could've made smaller sessions on the same day where everyone gets to work on the approach and the jump, on their swing, then trying to time everything together. There's no point in trying to make all these different shots if Technique is gonna stay bad at the end of the day. You don't hit a shot properly if You can't get ito the right position, and You can't get into the right position without learning how to time Your approach and Your Jump. Once You get proficient with getting into the right position in the air consistantly, and you have a decent technique for arm swing (which is more of a full body movement than just the arm), Then you can try and play around with the different angles and different types of shots.

Thank you so much for your input. We LOVE learning based questions. Please feel free to check one of the many studies in this exact area. Here is a great link. www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Motor-Learning-Principles-and-the-Superiority-of-in-Bain-McGown/30189ad67f91ef37fbb4d20b11ebccb0f2e2c91f It was surprising to us when we first started studying coaching and motor learning that progressions using part training actually slow down the learning process but since we can't ignore all of the science, we use whole training as much as possible. Here's an excerpt that might surprise you. “it is therefore surprising that despite its rich heritage and an overwhelming body of scientific literature, motor learning principles remain poorly understood and/or incorrectly applied by a large number of individuals in the coaching profession. An example of this incomplete understanding is exemplified by a recently published article in “Coaching Volleyball”, the official technical journal of the American Volleyball Coaches Association1. This article, “Whole vs. Part Training”, [4] seeks to encourage the reader, “to consider using part-to-whole training progressions in your gym and to make fundamental skills training a high priority for your program.” While we acknowledge that the author is entitled to share his opinion on the use of part teaching methods, we are compelled to observe that the material presented in this article, which advocates part-to-whole training progressions for volleyball, reflects neither the current knowledge in the field of motor learning research nor an informed application of the motor learning principles to development of skilled motor behaviors. Consequently, the novice coach or uninformed instructor might agree with the author’s statement that, “A teaching progression that starts with a narrowly-focused action without a lot of distractions (part), which is then progressed by adding more and more complexity to be almost gamelike (whole), makes too much sense to be ignored.” ****Regrettably, concluding and/or seeking to demonstrate that “part-to-whole training progressions” are a preferred instructional paradigm simply because such progressions appear to “make sense” ignores nearly a century of scientific evidence and volumes of published research that have conclusively demonstrated that part progressions have minimal transfer to the whole skill [2] and in a number of scientific studies part training methods have actually demonstrated negative transfer [5, 6]. Consequently, given the educational and technical nature of “Coaching Volleyball”, we believe that a comprehensive, evidence-based rebuttal of the thesis that, “part to whole progressions represents a viable teaching model” is required.”
