@@CoachJulia Thanks for the update, awesome vid! Looking forward to trying out some sideways sliding next I can get back on the ice! So intriguing, as during the end of that move, it looks like you are basically edgeless (just boot and knee glide).

When I was 12, 2 days before my 13th birthday I tried doing the forward lunge. I saw so many kids doing figure skating and I wanted to try it out. I was able to do it after practice but then I wanted to show my mom me doing it.... bad idea. I was too focused on watching her reaction and so I fell, head first. I was wearing a helmet but still hit my eyebrow. Got 8 stitches and a cool looking scar now😂 it looks so easy but let me tell you, it’s not! Be careful out there guys! Have fun!

This is great! Yes, my back leg would often slide around to the side and make me spin out. I couldn't figure out exactly why sometimes it did and sometimes I got it right. Now I know, it is because I need to stretch more so I can immediately get the boot on the ice. I remember two days after first learning lunges my legs were soooooo sore, so I avoided working on them more to not always feel sore. But hearing you explain the importance of stretching makes total sense! I just need to work on my flexibility during normal workouts and always do stretches before skating. Thanks again for another fabulous video! So glad you are making these. I used to take lessons but can't afford them right now. Your videos are helping me work on and hone my skills while I am not getting lessons. Did you make a backwards crossover video yet? I would love help with those! Mine are pretty pitiful.😝

It’s always so nice when you finally understand what the issue is with a move isn’t it? You have to work at it. A move like this lunge takes practice and practice and practice. Maybe 200 lunges in you start to get it. Then there is a giant laundry list of other skills you need to learn. half swizzle, swizzle, snow plow stop, hockey stop, one foot forward glide, one foot backward glide, 3 turn, forward cross overs, backwards cross overs, two foot spin, one foot spin. It is very difficult and takes time and dedication to get anywhere. As a kid I always saw other kids skating so well, I never realized you had to work at it. In no way is it easy.
@JustMe-12345 Жыл бұрын
I love doing the half-turn one (that turns into a 3/4 turn for me often).... We actually learnt those pretty much together. So lunge, and then right after the turning (its pretty much just leaning your upper body towards your bent leg in front of you)

The key is understanding your not trying to drag the blade. When you see someone do it, you think they are dragging the blade, but no, you are trying to not drag the blade. I am still struggling with it but one key for my success seems to be to concentrate on keeping all my weight on my front foot. If I put weight in the back foot it tries to steer me. Keeping weight on the front foot allows success. Sometimes when I nail one I can put weight on both feet and crouch lower, so I expect that once I'm good at it I will be able to put weight on the back foot.

Hey coach, thnx for great explanation, but what about the boot itself during this exercise, it will get damaged because of friction ?
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
There can be a bit of rubbing of the leather against the ice, which over time will wear away at your boot polish. Some skaters will use skate tape to protect this area of the boot. There are also custom boot makers, like Harlick who makes my boots, that will add a lunge pad to the inside of the skate.

I just learned the lunge/drag yesterday, and I think my biggest fear is my balance being off when going down into it. Do you have any tips or exercises to help with this?
@CoachJulia4 жыл бұрын
Well, the good thing is that when you are going into a lunge, you are already go down and so a fall isn't to bad. 😁 But, I will say, building up core strength is always a good thing and could really help you with the balance issues.

Should you be able to do it on both sides? I can do it really easily on one side but not the other.
@TheLarryBrown2 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, like almost all tricks. If you are right handed you will probably be better with your right foot forward, but not me. On any one foot exercise I'm much better with my left foot. I have been working hard on my one foot forward glide and that helps with the lunge.

@@CoachJulia Ok I'll check it out, but my issue is when the laces come undone from the hooks on my boot. Should I invest in some boot covers?

Alice boot covers could help. Some people use hockey tape around their ankles, or a Velcro strap to keep the laces in control.
