It is definitely helpful to use the tor pick when you’re learning this move. Once it becomes easier for you, the toe pick is used less and less until it’s really done on the rocker. But for a beginner skater, that toe pick is very helpful for creating a pivot point that they can rotate around.

7:41 As you approach the apex of the turn your free leg swings around your skating leg, basically driving the entire motion, such that after the turn your free leg is already in its final position. That's an important but subtle detail that I hadn't noticed before while watching many 3 turn tutorials.

Oh my gosh, you totally just solved a problem I was having with my right side three turns. In your video toward the end you mention how the free leg moves slowly past the skating foot as you turn. I went back and watched my skating practice video and could see on the right side turns I was either delaying my free leg movement or prematurely tried to snap it around causing my hip to drop in and falling off my edge. I could see on my left turns though I was moving my free leg gradually like you explained and that is why they always came out properly. I cannot thank you enough, that one small detail has solved a big problem for me. ❤❤❤❤❤

I totally love these videos! I just started taking skating lessons (at 35 years old… I meant to just learn some basics to make sure I was confident on skates and could stop properly, but I somehow got to a level where I am doing two foot spins, and 3-turns! And I’m loving it!). I just did my first outside three turns today but this video definitely gives me a better idea of how to improve! Thank you!

Don't be so sure about that. Other videos teach you to do the outside three turn in the way you have decided is wrong. If you do outside 3 turn with same arm forward (e.g. left foot fwd and left arm), that is what you are saying is the wrong way, then you are not hugging the circle at that point, but as you glide towards the apex of your circle you twist your torso such that by the time you get to the apex your opposite arm is front and you are hugging the circle at that point. Many 3 turn videos make a major point of that torso twist, so it may not be as wrong as you have decided.

I was giving too much weight to Coach Lloyd and I have been doing it "same arm forward" and getting good that way. I'm going to have to try it coach Julia's way now. Once again thank you for these videos. They're a very helpful addition to what my own instructors are telling me (and a good refresher of all the stuff I can't keep in my head between one class and the next). I'd just like to say that today was a breakthrough for me. I'd been working the forward outside three turn using the curve from the hockey goal markings as a guide and making good progress. Today, however, I used one in my "regular" skating. I was skating, in the turnaround at the end of the rink (forward crossovers), I thought to try the three turn here, at speed. I did it. I finished the turn around with backward crossovers, then backward stroking to the other end of the rink, more backward crossovers about halfway around, step to forward inside edge, and continue around the rink skating forward. This was a big breakthrough for me and you helped me get there. So thank you once again.

Hi Ms. Julia, I am a rather new beginner roller skater and have been trying the three turn for months but have not been able to do it smoothly or comfortably. I watched your video and realized a building block that I was missing, well a few of them actually. The main one was to learn the two foot turn first. As this applies to ice skating I am sure the same applies to roller skates. I am excited to work on this and see if I have more confidence trying a three turn. I see many people trying to do three turns in roller skating and its not smooth...very sloppy and jumpy. I don't want that. Thanks for the video !

So well explained! I wonder why my coaches and judging from the comments, many more coaches don’t talk about using the toepick. It’s so essential for so many basic skills?? Like the bunny hop, or the waltz jump, and this! I was going crazy because I didn’t get how people do these turns, and of course it’s the toepick! It’s always the toepick! Because they aren't great at explaining things in English and a lot of talk on the ice may be wasted breath and seems like wasting ice time and they think showing how is better than explaining how, but it's not. However for this 3 turn the toe pick is not as important as you are thinking. Using the toe pick is helpful for beginners but if you're good you don't need the toe pick at all. I do my 3 turns just fine in hockey skates and I hate hate hate hate those suicidal toe picks on my figure skates.

I'm often a little wobbly coming out of the 1 legged 3 turn. Thanks for the advice on staying low and extending. I think I'm not getting low enough on my supporting leg and I may be swing my free leg too much. I will try your advice and hopefully that fixes these issues. I'm an adult figure skater just getting back into it after a few years. I love the way you break down all the moves! With three turns, my biggest issue is that I turn immediately after I push off. I don't glide & then turn. I'm trying to fix this. Hoping to work with a coach at my rink soon.

Checking means "stopping rotation at the exact correct point." It's difficult to understand and explain. In this case you use your arms to hug the circle and when you flip your hips around you hold your arms steady on the circle and that gives you a measure by which you can feel when to stop rotating your hips.

Yay...the 3 turns are the last thing I need to learn to start my waltz 8s. Once I have my waltz 8s I can take the adult pre-bronze MITF and then the free skate test, AND THEN I can FINALLY actually start competing. That is so exciting!

I’m working on these now. My coach wants me to hold my foot by my ankle. I find this really difficult. I might try with my leg extended like this next week! Learning skating at 31 is challenging, but oh so fun!

mine does too and i always wrap my ankle around my other foot without realising it. it makes my feet get tangled and a lot harder to do 3 turns. there are about 10 people in my class so the coach never helps me to much.

Hi Coach Julia, I'm a skate host, and I tell EVERY skater who comes to rink to watch your video's! (I need your business card to hand out lol). You are our favourite coach! One question... I have trouble with being stable at the ending, and love your comment about leg extension and being low at the end. That helped for sure!! What i'm not quite sure on head position at end, and it's a little hard to work out in video. (In videio i'm not sure if you are looking a particular way to engage with camera, or that is part of the turn). Eg: If I do a forward left outside 3 turn - as I finish... should my head be looking towards the direction of travel (ie towards my right arm/shoulder), or should I be looking more at my left arm/shoulder - ie where I have just come from?) (I'm sure in years to come i'll be able to do either, but for now everything I can do to help preventing wobbles!) Thanks for your amazing teaching and detail!!!

Usually Toe-Heel is taught for Brackets. The Three turn is usually done with an extended leg. With an extended leg you can better check out of the turn.

Dear Coah Julia, I would like to ask you for advice to improve my 3-turns. I manage to do left forward outside one quite consistently, and right forward inside one is starting to work. But I cannot say same for right forward and left inside ones. I have led to the conclussion that I can control more or less control my body and edges when I turn counterclockwise, but not when I try to turn clockwise. Can you recommend me any exercise either on ice or off-ice to work on so I can get through this difficulty. Thank you so much, and sorry for my bad English.

My biggest issue with two-foot turns is that once I’m backwards, I lose my momentum and stop moving. I have to do a micro-backwards swizzle to get moving again. What can I do to maintain my momentum once I’ve turned?

Practice. Get moving, do a two foot half turn and glide for a three count, no pump. Then turn back forwards and glide for a three count, all with no pump at all. Work on that and you will learn to maintain momentum.

Lakina that is correct! The front of the blade is curved, so this is an easier spot to turn on.

Yes, lifting the heel is the #1 most crucial element. If the back for your blade scrapes while you're trying to turn, forget it. When you lift the heel the turn happens as if by magic.

Your coach is just teaching the arms differently. It is possible to do the arms that way, it is just not as controlled of a position. I never want to over-ride an in person coach though, so always follow your own personal coaches instructions.

I learned my three turns last season the way Coach Julia explains in her videos, which was really easy. Now, I have another coach and she wants us to hold the arm of the skating side in front. It's so hard to re-learn my three turns 😅

@@kailynn4483 some time has passed since I learned 3 turns. I compromised by starting with “same hand in front” but gently swinging my opposite hand as I ride my entry edge so that when I actually do the turn, I’m in “opposite hand in front (Coach Julia’s way)” position. That kind of hides the arm position issue so that my coach doesn’t get pissed. At the end of the day, whatever works for you is best.

It may feel more natural to some people, but you are overstating it. I do mine not facing the circle and I think they probably locked in for me within the expected time frame of practice. I just did a survey of the subject and most videos teach "opposite arm forward," as Coach Julia does here. I was giving too much weight to Coach Lloyd and I have been doing it "same arm forward" and getting good that way. I'm going to have to try it coach Julia's way now. It means to stop the rotation of your foot and hips at the exact correct time. "Check" means "stop at a specific place." You use your arms to hug the circle and then use that as a guide to feel where to stop the rotation of your foot and hips. It's hard to understand and hard to explain. It's not really as important as coaches make it sound. It's more "helpful" than it is "important," but I have found that by concentrating on that check my 3 turn happens more smoothly. Once you're good you won't even think about it.

They aren't hard at all, they are just hard to learn. Lifting the heel of the ice and then putting it back down is the key.

My teacher teaches a big class and I understand that but she just tells us what to do and then tells us to do it and she also doesn’t explain things very well causing most of her students to repeat lessons

I also get disappointed by coaches but in their defense, a lot of talk to ten people that can't hear in a noisy rink may just be wasted breath, not to mention blown vocal cords.

Three Turns alway travel along the same circle. If I was to switch circles, then I would be doing a Rocker Turn. 🙂

@@CoachJulia got it; thank you! i was wondering more about what i saw as not checking the motion of the turn,, but i see now that of course you are but just in a different way, i.e.. with the extended free leg after the turn? (thinking of the turn more as piece of footwork or an eventual jump entrance rather than a single discreet element that “stops” after you complete it.)
