In this video, Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) will cover the Coagulase test procedure and discuss the background information to understand how this test works. Specifically, this diagnostic test indicates the presence of the enzyme coagulase in a bacterial culture. This is an enzyme that acts as a virulence factor, helping to disguise the bacterium as a blood clot so it might hide from phagocytes. This test is used to differentiate coagulase-positive bacteria, like S. aureus, from coagulase-negative staphylococci. The two versions of this test, the slide test and tube test, are described.
