The airspace above Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area is the most restricted in the U.S. The U.S. Coast Guard is responsible for intercepting any potential threats that may appear in the sky. Only on "CBS This Morning," we spent an afternoon riding with the unit that responds at a moment's notice to protect the D.C. airspace. Jeff Pegues reports.

Being a physically uncoordinated fuckstick- tends to proclude you being a pilot. The "helicopter before the F-16" decision seems like a "WTF" moment, but the reality is that the unknown target's airspeed will determine who gets the first call, the Coast Guard - which can hang with slower single engine private planes a lot longer than an F-16 can, or the Air Force - who has much better aircraft to deal with corporate and commercial jets. As the training targets are always going to be the CAP's Cessna 182 or Gippsland GA-8 aircraft, the Air Force's F-16's will be called for training much less often than the Coast Guard will.

Apaches are one of the slowest helos in the fleet. I've heard that the Apaches have had to ask the CH47s and Blackhawks to slow down because they are too fast. For reference, a fully armed and fueled AH64D Apache needs to have a moving runway takeoff (like a plane) in order to get airborne. They are not capable of hover until they burn off excess fuel or release munitions.

I mispoke. The U.S.C.G. is an agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which is federal law enforcement agency, the other 4 military branches are part of the Department of Defense (DOD) whose purpose is national security. I should have said the USCG is the only military branch with jurisdiction inside US. The Posse Comitatus Act limits the jurisdiction of the DOD inside US borders. This act was passed to prevent future violations like those committed by President Lincoln when he suspended Habeas Corpus. You can't send Apaches out everytime someone enters controlled airspace. Only when there is a threat. Don't worry there is one ready and waiting anyways. Those NORDAM guys are good too.
@mystryj4771
@mystryj4771 5 жыл бұрын
Again back to my statement that the coast guard specifically that “interdiction units” mission needs to be seriously looked at. If there’s no threat why scramble anyone including a unarmed helicopter that is going to call either Air Force or Navy/marine assets anyway??? That’s what people are commenting about, not including that horrible running.
@coastie126
@coastie126 5 жыл бұрын
@@mystryj4771 it's called officer presence. Just being there is usually enough to deter people. Sending the Coast Guard is inline with their duties and legally responsible. There is no need to scramble a jet or attack helicopter.

Not armed? Doesn’t make sense, that’s like sending an unarmed cop to see if a gun is needed at a robbery first..

Wonder if they would scramble because one pilot following the river north or south accidentally nicks the edge of the no fly zone.

The Coast Guard is the the best at what they do but this is not their job. The secret service should have their own unit to do this. And "running" to the helicopter is not a thing. Like firefighters, walk fast, don't run. You can't help anyone if you get hurt on the way there.

Well Andrews AFB isn't that far from Washington they have F-16's that could get within the airspace in a matter of minutes. A HH-65 does not have any sort of weaponry unless it is put on the side of the helicopter. I find it confusing a little of why there's no F-16's at Reagan National airport wouldn't you? I also don't like they didn't give credit to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) a program that I am currently in and proud of being in it.

A red helicopter isn't going to scare a terrorist that's for sure. What if an aircraft was much faster than an 175 mph helicopter? Like a jumbo jet it can go over 500 mph that's 3 or 4 times the speed of that helicopter. I would rely more on F-16's at at least scare the person in that aircraft that "hey your in restrictive airspace leave the area now". An F-16 looks more intimidating than a HH-65 is what I'm saying.

They couldn't give them a black hawk with some weapons? wtf is an unarmed rescue chopper gonna do...? "please go away, or we'll call another aircraft to harm you...which will take time long enough to reach your target...k thx..."
