Opihi is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. Easy to pick and everything but the shell can be eaten raw or cooked. I prefer not to eat the guts. Limpet is a delicacy that any castaway would be thankful for in a survival scenario.

I have lost two cousins in the past year or so picking opihi's. The most recent one was my cousin Kent picking some for breakfast during a fishing tournament. The ocean gives life and will take it away.

What? Did they pass away due to eating poisoning or due to being swept away by the sea?

Native Hawaiians were taught to ALWAYS respect the ocean, because it provides life and takes away life. No matter if you are on the rocks or on the sandy shore, you must keep an eye on the water. My mom grew up in a remote area on East Maui and it was common practice for them to "live off the land" or gather ʻopihi (limpet), hāʻukeʻuke (purple flower looking sea urchin), pipipi (little black snails) & limu (seaweed) for their meals. It was vital to manage their resources for long term use and not exploit these resources for profit. Except for the pipipi, the other items were eaten raw. if you enjoy eating high priced sushi, then eating these delicacies in its pristine state should not be a problem. Aloha.

Props or making video👍 I'm sure it's been said already but us Hawaiians pronounce it O-Pee-Hee and not O-Pee-Eee- I'd also suggest a butter knife so you don't accidentally lacerate your catch - I use a butter knife or a small flat metal tool (like one used for spackle) - and the "guts" actually is healthy to eat. It's not like crabs or shrimp where you want to stay away from the "innards" - Opihi graze on algae all day... So they're essentially vegetarians. 🤙

LilGreezaGaming 123 in Hawaii it’s okay to eat the guts, but on the mainland it’s dangerous because they can have toxins that can cause brain damage. They eat types of plankton here called red tide that has an acid that is very toxic.

MonikerOne actually they’re omnivalves and are safe because they just graze on seaweed unlike bivalves that filter the water and process and clean it. They’re like snails not clams, idk if i’d eat a mainland one raw but in the right spot i might

Next time let the locals do a video. Make us look bad . Lol plus overcooked , sticks as tongs ? Come on ,be a man . Grab them with your fingers . Eat them without the guts ? I don’t know anyone local or haole that removes guts . That’s the flavor 🤷🏾‍♂️. And we eat them raw . U should just stick to “your kind “food . Try spaghetti
