The Trabant from my footage was built in 1968. My friend is the fourth owner of it. It was Carpenter Bros, then Durant Enterprises (Durant gave it a casino theme but it was still called Trabant), then D&R Shows had it a few years and gave it a Casino sign, then Chicketti bought the ride from D&R in June 2019 and repainted it. He's had it ever since. To think that the Trabant I used to see at Clark County Fair would fall into my friend's hands lol

Thanks for featuring this fantastic ride. But I have to add some addtional info about the origins of the Trabant. The prototype Trabant originated in Germany. German showman Karl Mayer patented it and had it build to his plans. The prototype had it´s debut at Munichs Oktoberfest in 1960. It was a success, but Mayer knew the ride was still not up to his standard. So he made a leasing-deal with his friend, German-American showman Carl Sedlmayer. Sedlmayer brought the prototype to the USA where it played succesfully at Royal American Shows. Due to its huge success, they contacted Harold Chance and asked him if he could refine the ride for serial production. The first Chance Trabant debuted in Chicago in 1962. It´s estimated that Chance sold about 300 units. The original inventor Karl Mayer received a license fee for every built ride for 20 years. Heinrich Mack then saw the ride in Chicago and imediately began to plan a serial production for his own version. The first Hully Gully debuted in Germany in 1967. It became such a big hit that some of the first customers sold their new rides to fellow showmen for triple prizes, cause Mack could not meet the demand. Since the Hully Gully was also capable of turning backwards, the showmen would announce that "the next trip will go backwards". This actually became a cultural meme, that to this day Germans say "Hully Gully rückwärts (backwards)" when they want to say that things are getting unusual or wild.

Glad to see this classic flat ride still continues today. Have you ever seen the viral YT video posted about 15 years ago of a Mexico Trabant ride gone crazy? It is believed the ride operator was inebriated at the time and sped up the speed and duration of the ride to give a very intense experience. Since then, I’ve often wondered if Trabants are equipped with a ride governor which controls the maximum speed of the ride.

there's a scene in the movie The Sandlot where the main kids in the movie decide to try chewing tobacco while they are at the fair. they decide to ride a Trabant and immediately proceed to vomit chewing tobacco all over the place. it's one of the most hilarious scenes in the movie. unfortunately, it's the scene that gets cut when they show it on tv so if you want to see it, you probably have to stream it or use a DVD

I've been able to ride it only a couple of times in quite a few visits to the park, so it seems like even when it was operating it rarely ran. I see they don't even list it on the rides section of the park website now which leads me to think they intend to dismantle it at some point, but they also removed Klondike Gold Rusher from the site for several years but apparently brought it back. In addition to it running fairly uncommonly, they also required 2 riders per car which made it hard for some people to ride.

Ex-original trabant operator here (Wheel of Fortune at Valleyfair). One of the more interesting things about that installation was it was one out of only a handful of rides (I think the rest were in Planet Snoopy) that were allowed to operate during lightning but could NOT operate during rain. This was due to the original Trabants using a rubber wheel to spin the ride vehicle disk, and their braking power was significantly reduced if the wheel got wet. I spent many hours sending that thing through cycles to try to finish drying off the wheel.... I also remember that installation was not automatic whatsoever, so the standard procedure was to count in your head regarding proper cycle times. Of course I came up with my own cycles when supervisors weren't looking lol.

Great video as always. I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while. The Trabant was also quite popular in the UK. The story is kinda similar to that of the Scrambler, where UK Showmen & manufacturers would build their own to save on import costs (these would be similar to the original Chance model). Over 40 Trabants were built in the UK between when they were first introduced (around 1965) & the 1980s, when most manufacturers stopped production, with most being built by Bennett, Turnagain & ARM UK. These rides would be quite popular, both with Showmen & Amusement Parks, particularly the Butlins Parks. Eventually though, these rides would get rarer & rarer. They can still be found at some Butlins Parks, but outside of that, they're quite rare now. The only other one's I know of are one in Bridlington, two travelling in England (John Wesseldine's Razzle Dazzle & Nick Peel's Mexican Hat), a Reverse Time 24 at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach & an outward facing trabant in Scotland called Star Fighter (built by RH Fabrications & based off a Freestyle) which is the only Trabant I've ridden & is also the most recent having finished completion in 2021.

I remember going to my home county fair all the way back in 2005-2006 and riding their Chance Rides Trabant. I knew it was going to be my favorite just from watching this mesmerizing thing, and boy was I never disappointed. One thing that stuck out to me aside from the awesome casino black-and-red paint with the purple arms and silvery-white centerpiece: a clicking sound made every revolution or two of the wheel. I don’t know why but I always associated the ride with that sound, so to know that most of these early renditions of the ride didn’t age very well makes it… well… click as to why. (Silly anecdote on how little I knew of the rides’ typical conditions.) On SBF’s rendition, I believe I’ve ridden that one at Malibu Jack’s as of late and *man* is the steeper angle so much better for the outside facing seats. (I can’t imagine how unimpressive it would be otherwise.) Of course, I can’t help but wonder about the history of the Reverchon Explorer, ARM Quasar and such now. Anyway, rambling aside, awesome video! Looking forward to lots more videos!👍

I remember about the Trabant ride back in the early 2000 that has three rotations where it has a rotating L shaped arm on top of the rotating lifting arm and the spinning platform of gondolas on top of the rotating L shaped arm spins in a flat horizontal angle in the air and it tilts in a 90° angle when the L shaped arm rotates in a 45° angle on top of the rotating lifting arm. The Trabant ride title name is Regalette and Jackhammer that used to be in operation at one of the Disneyland theme parks.

I used to ride the Trabant all the time at Riverside Park in Massachusetts (The park that was bought by Six Flags and became Six Flags New England. I'm still butthurt at that purchase. The thing that made me mad was that they initially kept the park exactly the same and added NOTHING but a change of the name on the sign. To go to Riverside Park, it was $15 to get in. After the Six Flags purchase, they didn't add a single thing to the park initially, but jacked the ticket prices up to $45!!!! As a young twenty something, who spent every week in that park during the summer, that ticket price was WAY TOO HIGH. And they didn't start adding stuff till years later. And on top of that, they committed the crime of bulldozing all my favorite rides.)

Now *this* ride really hits my sweet spot! (I always pronounced it "TRAY-bant", though, with the emphasis on the first syllable.) My first memories of this was at Keansburg, NJ, back in the mid-80s. The rides from that era are long gone (and Keansburg is just a shell of what it once was), sadly. I always wondered why some faced clockwise and others faced counterclockwise ... now I know. Thx for that! FWIW, the old versions could run both forwards and backwards ... for some reason, most modern-day Wipeout rides (with seats facing each way) only run in one direction, which always irked me. Perhaps this is why I preferred the older models. I never did ride the one at Knoebels; it was lying dormant the first time I visited and has since been removed. I have ridden a model that was once at Casino Pier (with a 'Casino' motif). I still watch YT videos of Trabant rides from time to time. It's visually appealing to me to watch. I haven't yet had a chance to ride the 'freestyle' version, though I know of one at an FEC that's not far from SFGA. Thx for this video!
