I live in a city on the NE Regional. I take it when I want to solo travel to DC or NYC. Charlottesville has the Cardinal also run through my hometown as well. It’s nice seeing the Chicago bound train pass through every so often

I dream to ride every Amtrak train in its entirety. As someone who lives in California, the Northeast Regional is super annoying because of all the different branches. I can’t do the entire route in one shot!

The tracks in place today were planned, purchased and built well over one hundred years ago. Growth of population and commerce grew exponentially with less and less land available to lay track in a consistent plan for freight and passenger service. It is just the reality of the geographic region. Similar restrictions apply to vehicle road travel. Many cart paths trodden down since 1776 have been paved over to provide vehicle access with no real route planning.

That's an Amtrak EMD AEM7 locomotive only a few years away from its retirement, for the last ones pulled in June 2016

Is the only reason they are going to start using dual mode locomotives because the freight railroads will not allow electrification, or did no one actually do a cost benefit analysis of electrifying those other routes versus the maintenance of the right of way and new heavier and more complex locomotives, versus running lighter weight and simpler electric locomotives over the entire region?

I don't know what studies have been done or not, but electrifying all those off corridor lines would take a lot of time and money. Some of these trains only run once or twice per day to certain destinations. The equipment needs to replaced soon and in lieu of having all electrical infrastructure in place, this is a good alternative. It also allows for all electric operation if wires are added to other routes in the future.
