I think it makes sense that the Goju Ryu taught to Daniel by Mr. Miyagi isn't the standardized form of Goju Ryu we know. Remember that in the movie Mr. Miyagi father was around during a time were the practitioners didn't formally establish the styles and also sometimes they got together and exchanged different techniques. Some lost in time some, some carried over but passed down to individual people but not formally incorporated. Just hunch.

Hi Sensei! Great video! I too am a HUGE Karate Kid fan and I've done a few episodes analyzing the movies and the show, recently I did an episode looking at the Katas, as well as working on an update to include the Kanku Dai you mentioned here as well as the Naihanchi Sam Dan in The Next Karate Kid. I DO believe they intended Miyagi Do to be Goju Ryu, too many clues hint towards it. The screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen, is a student of Goju Ryu and based his Miyagi partially on his instructor, and named him after Chojun Miyagi. Also, in the Karate Kid Part 2...Chozen wears the Goju patch on his gi, and Chozen is a student of Sato, who learned Karate along with Miyagi from Mr. Miyagi's Father. Traditionally a father may not teach his sons, but Mr. Miyagi directly states that his father taught him. Now I too questioned the Kanku kata being in Goju Ryu, and hear me out here and tell me if this theory makes sense. Chojun Miyagi is from Naha...in the Karate Kid part 2, they make a point to have have Mr. Miyagi tell Daniel to find Naha on the map, and his village is next to it. Mr. Miyagi was born in 1925 (according to the headstone in Cobra Kai) but Goju Ryu officially founded in 1930. Since a lot of Karate in Okinawa is locally taught...would you agree that it's very possible that the Miyagi Family Karate was, as you suggested in this video and then when Chojun Miyagi (perhaps a fictional relative) developed his system of Gojy Ryu that Miyagi's Father would have adapted some of the teaching and passed that down to his son, Mr. Miyagi? This way it would make sense that Miyagi Do is primarily Goju Ryu (based on the patch) but with a mix of other Okinawan Karate. I'm curious to know what you think. (You may have a copy of this in your spam folder, I had included a link to my Kata Video)

Hello!! In Karate Kid Part 2, Mr. Miyagi did the final part of the Shisochin kata, when Daniel came to the dojo and saw Mr. Miyagi, I support what @art of one dojo says. Also when they visit the dojo in the city, Sato's nephew wears Goju Kai's fist logo (obviously we know that Goju Kai is the Japanese line that Master Gogen Yamaguchi continued after the death of sensei Chojun Miyagi), and when the storm broke that destroys the town, Sato's nephew wears his karategi and in his jacket he had the fist of the goju kai but the ideograms are not correct, says KARA TE. I am also struck by the design of the signboard of the Dojo de Sato, the shape it has is of positive and negative like the logo of the Goju Ryu IOGKF school, but it is fiction and as our friend @artofonedojo says that Robert Mark Kamen did Goju Ryu (I read that he practiced Goju Kai, maybe that's why I include the fist). The role of Mr. Miyagi was inspired by Meitoku Yagi. Rob Kamen, who wrote the original Karate Kid movie, studied under him at one point. Rob's brother, Roy, recieved his black belt from Seikichi Toguchi. It was all based upon goju ryu, but at the end of the day, they are writing for the screen, and it's got to be entertaining.

The funny thing is that they initially wanted Fumio Demura to play Mr. Miyagi in the original film, even having him read for the part, but he didn't feel comfortable trying to act. This led the studio to first audition Toshiro Mifune for the part, but they thought his performance made the character too serious, so then they auditioned Pat Morita, who based his performance on Demura's mannerisms, with Demura staying on as a consultant and Morita's stunt double.

Maybe, as you said, parents find different senseis for their kids. Maybe Mr Myagi’s sensei really was Mabuni Kenwa, and Myagi Chojun is on the wall nor for being Mr Myagi’s sensei, but for being his father? Or, in the original movie Mr Myagi says that his father taught him his karate. So maybe Myagi Chojun was Mr Myagi’s official sensei, but really Mr Myagi teaches the karate that his father, Mabuni Kenwa, taught him. Or maybe they just made mistakes due to not researching things as deep as they should. 🤷🏻♂️

It's also possible that their lineage started with the Miyagi family Goju, then at the second generation more Shito ryu or even other styles like Shotokan or Kobudo were added in Mr. Miyagi's own training, with Daniel-San making more refinements and additions of his own at the third generation, perhaps with more Chojin Miyagi emphasis.
@paulocuento99494 жыл бұрын
perhaps if we buy into the conspiracy and the facts laid out for us... it is entirely possible that MR. Miyagi actually took lessons from both his sensei and his father. perhaps differences were blurred for the sake of MR. Miyagi being an unofficial master teaching in the US, a foreign soil.. therefore lineage was no longer necessary, only heritage was as far as real world examples go.. the history of brazilian jiujitsu, judo, and traditional jiujitsu somehow reminded me of such phenomenon

The karate nerd in me loves the detail in this explanation, but the realist in me thinks Netflix may have not even given it near as much thought. Let's just place that picture up to show the family lineage." I wouldn't be surprised if that was as much thought that went into it but that's why there are people like you and the Karate Nerd community to keep them in check!

Firstly, I love Cobra Kai! I think we can learn about was learned and what was taught from Sato Sensei too, apparently said to have the same Master as Miyagi Sensei. One focused on offence and the other defence... Also as we all do at some point, (for real karate anyway) we make a conscious decisions to work on elements of our style to enhance it for our own size, shape, flexibility and understanding. As a result Daniel only learned one side of the art, the side in which Mr Miyagi thought best to teach... maybe in his younger years he would have been more aggressive in his approach... Also Soto stayed in Okinawa, Miyagi left when he was a very young adult.... I have never in my life met a Black belt who was 18 and understood Karate! To me that’s a fantasy given to promote clubs ££££ Also a very good point Miyagi’s teacher his father kept only two rules in the family Dojo. 1. Karate for defence only 2. First learn rule number one. Is that because his father had not taught him rule number two? I believe series 3 will involve a time laps, one to show the recovery of Miguel and two to give Daniel time to learn what Miyagi did not after he left. Time for Daniel to learn rule number 2!! The two scrolls that are referred to as rule one and two, actually translates to 1.) Karate first move/punch) (空手無先手 -karate musente) 2.) First be of sound mind/heart.(先正其心) - sensei goshin or sensei sono kokoro. So rule 1 and 2 being stated as karate for defense only, rule number 2 "see rule number 1" is just basically just a English transliteration of the two

My humble opinion: first of all, Cobra Kai is just a TV show. It wouldn't surprise me to see a bunch of Karate techniques from different styles, mixed up just for entertainment sake. In Kyokushin, for example, we also have Seienchin and Kanku katas, with its slight differences from what is shown on Cobra Kai. Even the crane stance (Tsuru ashi dachi) and crane kick (tobi nidan mae geri) can be found in Kyokushin as well. And also, the first rule of Cobra Kai Karate (Strike First) is a complete and perfect opposition of one of my favorite rules on the Niju-Kun: "Karate ni sente nashi" (There is no first movement on Karate), which makes Cobra Kai a very well thought antagonist on the story. What really matters here, I believe, is how Cobra Kai is raising interest on Karate among people - which is my favorite outcome from all of it. :)

Most informative, great job! However, You're theory is shot down by Mister Miyagi himself in the very first film. When Daniel asks him about it, his answer is crystal clear: ''Father teach.'' And in the second film, he explains to Daniel that he even asked his father to make an exception and ALSO teach to his best friend Sato although, in Okinawa, karate was handed down from father to son (according to... the script). Sorry... Your vid is still great though and so is Cobra Kai :)
@David_Downs3 жыл бұрын
The character of Miyagi was named after him, but Fumio Demura was also Pat Moritas stunt double, and trainer as well in the film., so Shito Ryu is also represented in the series.
@CalvinLimuel4 жыл бұрын
I guess the theory you suggest is possible, that Mr. Miyagi was a descendant of Miyagi Choujun but trained under Mabuki Kenwa instead. Although in the second film, Mr. Miyagi claimed that his fisherman ancestor's boat got carried off and ended up on the Chinese shore (presumably Fujian/Fukken), when he returned to Okinawa he also brought his own martial arts, thus asserting that he was perhaps a pioneer of Tudi. The creator of the movie Robert Mark Kamen, actually trained under Yagi Meitoku, and his brother Roy Kenneth Kamen trained under Toguchi Seikichi, both students of Miyagi Choujun. Thus the nod for Miyagi Choujun as Mr. Miyagi and the portrait in Cobra Kai, although probably that's meant to be Mr. Miyagi's ancestor that he told the story off. The confusion started when they got Fumio Demura as the show consultant and a character model for Mr. Miyagi, instead of another Goujuuryuu practitioner. I don't know if that was just a decision from the higher-ups, or if Pat Morita already knew him beforehand. Rob Kamen was probably not in a position to train the actors, hence as you said we got Shitouryuu features as the foundation of Mr. Miyagi's Karate with some Goujuuryuu that Rob Kamen learned from his sensei, not the other way around. This means that Cobra Kai is actually being super, super consistent with the original materials.

My goju ryu sensei actually does teach knife hand techniques, as did my shito ryu teacher, so now I wonder if these knife hand techniques were added sometime in my sensei’s own unique style, or if the goju ryu style actually does have knife hand techniques in the first place and that different people disagree or agree on the widespread use of knife hand techniques in goju ryu. Edit: it turns out that goju ryu does in fact traditionally have knife hand techniques, so perhaps you wear a bit misinformed on that point Jesse. Very good analysis! What's also intriguing is that if you keep in mind Mr. Miyagi's age, and the fact that the real-life Chojun Miyagi is an actual photographic portrait in Daniel's dojo, rather than a painted portrait like all the other Miyagi ancestors, it strongly suggests that the real-life Chojun Miyagi is actually Mr. Miyagi's father (or possibly grandfather). Actually, Robert Mark Kamen is the screenwriter for Karate Kid and “the film is a semi-autobiographical story based on Kamen's life. In 1964 when Kamen was 17, he was beaten up by a gang of bullies after the 1964 New York World's Fair. He thus began to study martial arts in order to defend himself. Kamen was unhappy with his first teacher who taught martial arts as a tool for violence and revenge. Hey well said. I've just made a similar comment that Daniel would be introducing new fighting styles & all new things his way. It is still all self defence. I think this guy is not looking at the bigger picture here.

I knew it from the start that the style shown in the Karate kid and movies and Cobra Kai series is not Goju Ryu. I knew that it was Shito Ryu because of the way they performed the Kata. I practice Shorin, Goju, and Shito that's why I could tell the difference. Thank you for clearing this up in your video. :)

When you get into the lineages of Okinawan Karate, you're getting into a quite dysfunctional family. Sorry for the linguistic imagery.......but it's true. Then when you include the Karate systems taken to Japan, and the changes made because of...well....bigotry.........it becomes 10 times worse. And that is an understatement! Thank you for researching these things, and placing videos here. I'm sure you're getting a lot of criticism from some "purists". Don't let it bother you. These people are those who are emotionally connected to their style.......much like an American Football fan is connected to their team. Logistics, facts, data, none of that matters more than the emotional connection to their team. But most of these people that I've spoken to, don't know their lineage past two or three instructors......and their word is "law". So shallow....so thank you again.

Sensei Enkamp, would you consider making a video in the future explaining the major difference between each of the 4 main styles of karate (Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu)? I know you've already made a video saying that it doesn't really matters of the path you choose to climb a mountain, since the aim is the same for all the paths. Yet, you still need to pick among one of these paths to reach the top, and I think it would be cool from you to share your knowledge on the subject so we could see what initialy differenciated the 4 styles, what did each founder insisted on etc...

Hey Jesse! Loved you video :) I think the photo os chojum is there just because he was the main influence of Mr. Miyagi character and his karate philosophy on the first movies and the karate kid universe. Like how Mr. Miyagi is always talking about balance and how this is the core of his karate, and even tho balance is the essence of all karate styles, its a takes a big part of GojuRyu (hard soft). Unfortunately, the moviments that is shown on the show is all about cinematography. I think they just think how it will look better on camera really. It's already good the fact they drink on traditional Okinawa karate to begin with ;) Keep making this awesome films! Peace!!

In karate kid 2, Miyagi's friend/rival Sato had a Dojo that used a fist symbol that was one of the branches of Goju Ryu. In the movie Mr. Miyagi said that his father taught both Sato and himself. Also, the guy who wrote the script for Karate kid was a Goju practitioner. So I believe Master Miyagi's photo was more of a way of showing respect and honoring one of Okinawa's Karate masters. Also, the Crane technique was supposed be more of a Butterfly kick, but no one do it to the directors satisfaction, so it was changed to what we saw on the move. This was on the DVD. Pat Johnson was the stunt coordinator, I only mention this because I saw it posted that Fumio Demura. Sorry if this sounds like a rant. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL ! Keep it going.
@gaminginsomniac44274 жыл бұрын
There's just one problem. Miyagi explicitly states, in both of the first two movies, that he was taught my his father, as was his then best friend Sato. We even see the dojo where he was taught and at one point it is even stated that his family only passed the Karate down from father to son and that Sato was the one exception.
@erniesbudolab2 жыл бұрын
I believe, given the timeline of when Mabuni-sensei moved to Japan, a more probable primary teacher of Mr. Miyagi’s father would have been Itosu Ankoh, although, it is explained that his father was lost at sea and ended up in China where he first learned martial arts. That aside, like Mabuni, he might have had both Itosu-sensei and Higaonna Kanryo-sensei as teachers upon his return to Okinawa. To be sure, Demura Fumio, whose teachers were Sakagami Ryusho and Taira Shinken, both exponents of Itosu-ha Shito Ryu, his position as advisor to the production played a big influence in the scripting. So, perhaps, instead of Miyagi Chojun-sensei’s photo placed at the shinsen/shomen of the dojo, the photos of Itosu-sensei and Higaonna Sensei would be more appropriate. Of course, The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai are works of fiction, and as consumers of entertainment, we are supposed to practice a suspension of disbelief. After all, in the original film, Mr. Miyagi’s style was not called Goju Ryu, it was called “Miyagi-do Karate.”

The reason Chojun Miyagi's photo is on the wall is because the writer of the karate kid franchise Robert Mark Kamen studied under Chojun Miyagi and the story is loosely based on him. Because Master Fumio Demura was the stunt coordinator on all the karate kid films, that is where you see the Shito Ryu influence on the katas. We have done 6 years of research on the 2 documentaries that are our there. The Real Miyagi and More then Miyagi. Best of luck
@bunburyodo4 жыл бұрын
It is actually really simple; the writers said they wanted incorporate a lineage for Miyagi. I read an article from them a while back where they explained that Mr Miyagi's style is supposed to be his own, Miyagi-do, based on his father's teaching and the culmination of his own later experience. The idea was that Mr Miyagi is a relative of Chojun Miyagi (never established what relation, but not son, likely a nephew). The purpose was that they didn't want to stick to one style of karate, and instead wanted to embrace components of the many popular styles to be simply representative of 'karate' as a whole. I should also point out that the screen writer for Karate Kid wrote it as a semi-autobiographical plot. He was beaten up and so went to learn Gojo-ryu and so named Mr Miyagi after Chojun Miyagi, and the Cobra Kai writers wanted to incorporate this.

Definitely agree with where you are coming from as I also studied okinawan karate. I think if you go back to the original karate kid Mr. Miyagi learned under his father in the story of the series but of course they never really established what kind of karate they did in the movies except that it was something passed from his family and also the slight part where the founder of their karate did go to china and brought it back to Okinawa. Of course back In the day when they were making the movies they probably were not thinking much about how to connect it but still very good analysis!! I love your content !!!

Some good points, but remember Jessie-San that movies and historical fact rarely align. The picture of Chojun Miyagi was merely paying homage. The original screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen was a Karateka and has stated in interviews that the character of Mr Miyagi was named in homage to Chojun Miyagi. Also remember in Karate Kid 1 when Daniel asks Miyagi where he learned Karate and Miyagi replies ‘father teach’. The Shito-Ryu influence was most likely paying homage to Fumio Demura- the stunt double for Mr Miyagi.

3:38....maybe this would explain the "shrouded mystery" of the family of Kensuke Miyagi which is mentioned by the teaser trailer of Cobra Kai 3....maybe it is really like you suppose, Jesse....that someone else (Kenwa Mabuni or somewhone related to the founder of Shito-Ryu) was the main instructor of Miyagi... but there is something what makes me thinking: Why was Chozen so hateful even before he saw Daniel for the first time? in the Karate Kid 2 it is only shown that Chozen is the antagonist for Daniel ... but his reasons for his suspicion are not mentioned ...

Hello. I'm a Japanese guy who loves The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. I don't know much about karate, but I would like to write about the roots of karate of The Karate Kid based on my own research. Miyagi-do karate is based on Goju-ryu. The person who inspired Miyagi's character is Seikichi Toguchi. The first movie's special move, "Crane Technic", is based on Goju-ryu's "Hakutsuru no Kata". It is said that the second special move, "The Drum Technique" is based on a technique that Toguchi-sensei devised during practice. The third special move, "Miyagi-Do no Kata,'' is based on the Goju-ryu "Seiyunchin.'' I learned about this history from a Japanese karate magazine called "Gekkan Hiden." However, as you say, I think there is a lot of influence from Shito-ryu as well. Thank you for the wonderful video.

And as a child of the Karate Kid era, long time admirer of martial arts. Wish I could learn Okinawa-authentic type karate. Would love to know your thoughts on Shotokan Karate compared to Okinawa original style. Is this the comparison between Japan mainland Karata versus Okinawa style?

The stunt double for Pat Morita (Mr Miyagi) was Fumio Demura Sensei who practices Shito'Ryu and Kobudo which explains the use of shuto uke and crane technics. On the other hand Cobra kay is based on Tang Soo Do which I recently discover is like a Korean flavor of Shotokan (just found some videos with all of their kata and are very close to shotokan version)

I have practiced Shitoryu and I’ll give u a history lesson. Miyagi Sensei and kenwa Mabuni were trained by higaona. This was after kenwas first Sensei itosu died. Kenwa practiced shuri te and Naha te karate styles, he combined kendo as he learnt this when he was in the military, to form Shitoryu. Goju Ryu and Shitoryu are cousins, the only difference is Shitoryu incorporates more faster, lightning like strikes whilst maintaining slow, circular breathing motions. Hope this cleared it up. For those who don’t believe me, I trained under Sensei con Kassis for a while and got my black belt.

In my dojo, which is Goju Ryu, we do Kobudo. As far as I know, the Japanese man who is the grand master of my School, Choyu Hentona, learned Kobudo from a descendant of some famous man called Matayoshi, who I think is a very important figure in Kobudo. In the Karate Kid movies, I think the second one in which they travel to Okinawa (the birthplace of karate) Miyagi tells Daniel that his grandfather, Miyagi Shinpo, started his karate style, and the son of the Matayoshi who "invented" kobudo was called Matayoshi Shinpo, so I see a paralelism there similar to the one with Chojun Miyagi. What I try to say here, is that even if Chojun Miyagi wasn't famous for teaching the use of weapons, some ancestor of Mr. Miyagi could have learned it from other masters and added it to the Miyagi-do style. Which I think makes sense, because as you know, Karate and Kobudo are like brother and sister. Thank you for your videos, I have been practicing karate for like 3 months now, so they are always helpful for extending my knowledge :)

I think the in-universe implication was that Miyagi-do was traditional Tode and both predates Goju-ryu and includes things that Gojun Miyagi, who'd be an uncle or a cousin of Mr. Miyagi, did not include in the Goju-ryu curriculum.

The Karate Kid is a semi-autobiographical story based on Robert Mark Kamen's life. When Kamen was 17, he was beaten up by a gang of bullies after the 1964 New York World's Fair. He began to study martial arts in order to defend himself. Kamen was unhappy with his first teacher who taught martial arts as a tool for violence and revenge. He moved on to study Okinawan Gōjū-ryū Karate under a teacher who did not speak English but himself was a student of Chōjun Miyagi. FYI- he also wrote screenplays for "Taken" and "The Transporter" series. I think he likes the martial arts very much.
