Yes, this is such a great story. Grandma Death tells Donnie his biggest fear: to die alone. He has to overcome that fear: in the end he dies alone. He chooses this to save the ones he loves (and all mankind) and restore the normal timeline/universe. Donnie Darko really is a super hero!! Great movie - every rewatch reveils new details. I still love it.

Richard said writing this his stand in is David the little boy at the end, but he lives through donnie in the movie. "THE ONLY REAL THING TO HAPPEN IN THIS MOVIE IS THE END, THAT DAVID IS IN" Later in his post college life around 24 years old, he is trying to break in to Hollywood as a Director, and Screenwriter. He forms an Idea to write about, the answer to the unexplained death of his neighbor, and adds things that may have come to light in his life as well as fictional elements. This way the death of a young boy, the broken system the older generation tries to control the youth by. I'll post a second post mostly of reinforcements. directly after this Now thinking of How Richard the Director/ screenwriter commented on this, and later added to appease the audience it makes sense. he related the Screen Play to the Time Travel, and the little under 29 days it took to write as the time Donnie gets in the Screen play. Posssibilities: in the very beginning Donnie rides his bike past, not only, a M.A.D.D. sign but Frank simultaneously, this could be based on a real event where Frank Runs over a Girl trick or treating, and Grandma Death is either a fictional, or alagory for why frank lost control. Gretchen is written in as Donnies love interest, but she is more looking for protection living in fear, from bad seeds, creeps, and to block the bad in the kiss and ladder, not love til after. Jim Cunnigham "Groomer" (and Drew Barrymore "4th wall META of the exploited ) might be caught closer to Richards time in college, and when girls of sparkle motion come forward he recognizes the Darko closer to his age, adding this to the plot. Cheneta is a representation or the White wash Subburbs, and the only minority student shown, she is blocked from being apart of the girls, showing she wants to dance too. Hollywood isnt ready to accept a Chubby, foreign, female, as a main role, and Richard couldn't get someone to green light the movie, if he made her the main character.... yet. Donnie not being mean, and later telling her it will be alright is a just wait minorities, its coming. and honestly I could keep going, pointing out the dry erase board on the fridge, and donnie losing the marker after Frank saved him. This version of "Mad World" by Gary Jules was produced for the movie. The movie was very niche at the time and not many people watched it... until the song blew up massively and suddenly was EVERYWHERE. That was the point when the movie also got more attention and recognition. For a while it was THE movie to watch, for people who wanted something to philosophize over (and appear clever), or if they simply wanted a mindf*ck movie. The movie is purposefully vague about its meaning, although there is a Director's Cut which lays things out more clearly (it is generally viewed as the inferior version). My interpretation was always that Donnie gets a glimpse into his future along his own lifeline, like he discusses with his teacher (so your assumption that the universe revolves around him would be correct in that case). But as the timer runs out, Gretchen dies and he kills Frank, Donnie decides that this is not a future he wants to be part of and he doesn't have to. So he stays in bed laughing, waiting for the engine to take him out.

@@DW.Strangeman I'm an old fart too, and yes, it's not as black&white as it seems to be. There are still good movies made. But there have been changes, esp. when it comes to Hollywood. Everything seems to be narrowed down to big CGI/SFX driven blockbuster franchise movies (and TV-shows) like MCU and Star Wars, and there seems to be less and less courage from the studios and producers to take some risks to support original and creative ideas. For sure, Hollywood was always about blockbusters, but not "only" about that as much as it feels today.

This was a small Indie project, but it was produced by Drew Barrymore so EVERYONE was down to play. This film taught me the real meaning and importance of quality music in film. Fun fact, Sparkle Motion was dancing to a different song, and they changed it to Notorious in post production. Don't recall original song. Mad World line - "the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had". Donnie Darko the superhero saved the day by dying.

@@StrokeofDadJokes Yeah, it kind of sucks how an ever growing number of movies have completely different versions and having to worry about which one they are watching when someone reacts to the movie, since one can be so much better. Like for Donnie Darko, only 2 or 3 out of the dozen reactions over the last few years, have been the theatrical version. For The Butterfly Effect, with alternate versions and endings, I think in its case the DC is the best, but there's only like 1 out of the dozen reactions to it over the last few years. All the others are to alt versions. Now I guess a new sequel version to I Am Legend is coming out, so I'm seeing more reactions to it, but again every reaction in recent months all choose the alternative version, which as with DD & TBE, I find completely lesser in impact than, in its case, the theatrical I Am Legend. Same goes with Mask changing music in DC, T2 changing ending, Little Shop of Horrors different endings, and numerous others, but those pop to mind off hand.

Love this movie. According to the director/writer, 28 days and the world would have been over for everyone had Donnie not done what he did. It's kind of hilariously complicated, but they were all detached from the "real" universe when the engine fell. Donnie going back in time completed the loop, he died, saving everyone from the dying bubble universe. Frank, as a kind of spirit guide, helped Donnie fix it, and when it went back, everyone had at least a feeling about what had happened.

Love your reactions as always, but what stuck out to me on this one is that you immediately recognized the Echo & the Bunnymen classic, “The Killing Moon”. Nobody has ever picked that up on a reaction to this movie! Love it! Yeah, kind of a small detail, but I’m a 56 year old music geek, so that made my day! In addition to this being a great movie on its own, there are also some inspired soundtrack choices from INXS, Tears for Fears, Joy Division (who eventually renamed themselves New Order after the lead singer committed suicide - also, cool tattoo of the lyric) and The Church (“Under the Milky Way” which you thought was Echo again). Definitely some songs here worth checking out. Another movie with some choice 80s cuts is Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack. An underrated 90s film for sure!

For people like Coby and I and others between 39-43 who were in highschool when this came out, I feel like this movie speaks directly our particular generation. I didn't even see it till years later myself. Spend the whole next day and a half thinking about it and feeling sad about it. Even though it takes place in the 80s, the mood of the movie and political/generational relationships feel VERY 2001 for me. Although my own family was quite artsy and independent in nature, I lived in a town in 2001 which was quite conservative and conformist, and my best friend's brother went to a Christian School which required students to wear shirts just like this highschool. The public school I went to although public, was still very conservative in nature, and the stereotypes and characters were very accurate to some of my high school teachers.

What a beautifully shot movie. From the blocking, the color pallette, and the music. How they slow pan and introduce most of the key Manipulated people of this timeline is great. Frank is actually the most benevolent character. He has a role, and apologizes to Donnie for the pain he knows he has to cause (destruction is creation). I love the small character moment of Frank's awe at the portal, and wanting to share it.

The brilliance and relevance of those final shots panning between different characters is extremely important to the overall takeaway of the movie. The characters don't know the exact details of what happened during the 'alternate' timeline, but they can feel the impact of it. Think of it like a hazy dream in which you can partially see bits of a future that turn into a nightmare. By him sacrificing himself, he gave them the opportunity to change their futures.

You almost have to be pre-prepped by others before watching this novelty of a film because it's a mindfk that usually takes some time and repeated viewings to process. It's been years since I've seen it but I clearly remember being deeply moved and affected by this movie. It required multiple viewings for me as well to even begin to try to understand it. I last saw it over a decade ago so if you feel my take is a bit off that's ok. But I think it helps to see Donnie Darko as a film about a time/dimension-traveling superhero who like all superheroes, wants to change the world for the better and is willing to sacrifice himself to do so. I also recall the film touching upon the enduring question of free will vs. destiny. It was asking how much say we have in what becomes of us. Are we a product of our choices or just slaves of our predetermined destinies? This was shown somewhat explicitly in the energy fields that emanated from people's chests. But also shown in Donnie's journey of course. The rejection of the imposters, systematic institutions, and/or institutionalized, reductive, unenlightened, unreflective thinking that rules over most of our lives was also another theme. But I think the biggest takeaway from this film is that it was a parable about the effect we as humans have on one another. So wanting to change and affect each other's lives in a more positive and meaningful way should be a shared aspiration of all of us. The reverberations of how Donnie affected people in one dimension or timeline were felt in their beings even across another dimension in a different or primary timeline; as shown by the montage of reactions from the characters near the end of the film. I think this is to illustrate to us just how powerful our life's impact can truly be on each other. Like pebbles thrown in the pond of shared human experience whose lives ripple across one another. So we should be conscious of it and live accordingly.

I watched this one night and then immediately watched it again with the director commentary. Really helped to actually understand what I just watched :) Director even said he maybe made it a little too unclear. The directors cut added in explanations to help but I think it distracts from the movie. Very basically, Donnie ended up in a tangent universe which was unstable, he needed to close the tangent universe and was given the tools to do it and frank to guide him to what he had to do. He had to reverse time and let himself die to close the tangent universe. All the things he that were happening to him were engineered to make him choose to do it in the end. The director explains in the commentary. The old lady somehow figured out how this process works and that it had happened many times before, explaining mysterious object that have appeared (like the jet engine) and things like Deja vu and it drove her mad.

If interested here's my attempt at a Full Explanation: It's about tangent universes - if a fourth dimension gets corrupted a tangent universe is created but has a limited life span (a few weeks). When Frank wakes up Donnie, and when the jet engine crashes we're ALREADY in the alternate tangent universe. Donnie was chosen (at random) to be the one to make sure the Tangent universe's artifact (the jet engine) is returned back to the Prime Universe. Donnie is given special powers as the now Living Receiver chosen to save the entire universe. Frank the bunny is what's considered to be a "Manipulated Dead" - someone who DIES in the Tangent Universe (who wouldn't have died in the prime timeline) who is chosen and sent back to the beginning of the tangent universe to guide the Living Receiver (Donnie) through the process of destroying the tangent universe and returning stability to the Prime Universe. The others Donnie interacts with such as the Teacher, The Chinese Classmate, and His girlfriend - they're all a guiding force known as the Manipulated Living who also help guide him, subconsciously, towards saving the prime universe. At the end, Donnie knowing his purpose uses his powers (Telekinesis for this event) to rip the engine off the plane and send it back through the portal to the prime universe. He wakes up in the prime universe thinking the entire Tangent Universe was a dream, he laughs and smiles and goes back to sleep thinking it was just some crazy dream not knowing the truth. Others who were Manipulated Living and Manipulated Dead had the same dream about the tangent universe and have residual memories of all of the events - which is why Gretchen and Donnie's mom wave to each other, it's why Jim Cunningham is crying (knowing what he is doing and eventually kills himself 14 days later), Frank the Bunny covering his eye, etc. Donnie saved the universe. Roberta Sparrow was a Living Receiver herself for a DIFFERENT Tangent Universe which is why she wrote the book (philosophy of time travel)- and also serves as proof that living receivers don't need to die in order for the Prime Universe to be saved after a corruption. If Donnie got out of bed for a drink instead of going back to sleep, the universe would still have been saved - but because he thought it was a dream he died.

I don't know if this will make complete sense, but the theory is that Donnie is in a time loop and each time he fails, it starts over, so when he succeeds, the alternate reality is gone. You noticed at the end, the characters feel like they were aware something happened to them (in that alternate reality)? Same thing happens to Donnie at the start of the movie where he looks up at the sky and laughs slightly because he senses something. That's the REALLY basic theory idea behind the movie. Frank wants Donnie to kill him so the dead Frank can come through the alternate reality and manipulate Donnie to fix the loop. In short, Frank needs him to leave his house at the start of the movie so all the events transpire to where the jet engine gets taken by the wormhole and Donnie goes back home to die so the timeline can stabilize.

The original movie was made in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 mins, and 12 seconds I’ve read. I own the extended version of this dvd that came in a metal case with Frank on the front. This was Richard Kelly’s first movie he ever made and what a bloody masterpiece it is

I can never really decide if "S. Darko" (the sequel) lives up to the greatness of this one (hard act to follow), but also well worth watching IMO. It stars Donnies' little sister Samantha as the lead (same actress - Daveigh Chase) years later after the timeline of Donnie Darko..and has a great soundtrack too. Totally different genre, but another cult classic you may enjoy is "The Man From Earth" (2007). A mainly dialogue-based set piece, but one of my personal favorites.

The girl that plays Gretchen Ross. She was in another underrated film which came out close to this movie and called Dangerous Lives Of Alter Boys. That is an amazing film you have to check out. Whats funny in Donnie Darko she is dating Donnie and in Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys her brother is named Donnie

I love the "world will end" prophecy was true, but not in the way most people think. Absolutely love when writers take things like that and reimagine them. My favorite book series did something similar. A character wanted answers to some questions and went to magocal beings that could tell you anything, but for a price. Well, the price was "half the world". He lost an eye. Sooooo good!

There is a directors cut that explains things in a more explicit way, with changes not just additions, takes some of the magic of the movie away I think, but it is an interesting watch.

Yeah, I'm definitely glad that I watched the theatrical version before the Director's Cut. The Director's Cut was interesting for giving you a bit more context, but now that I have that, I think I'd always choose to go back to the original for future viewings.

I always LOVED THIS MOVIE!!! Most people think it's depressing and sad... But I saw it as an inspirational story of an isolated kid, with no friends, who finds a girlfriend, only to have her get killed but through talking with "Grandma Death", Donnie comes to face his ultimate fear... Dying alone. After his girlfriend died, and he knew SHE died alone... He was like F it, and went back in time to before the engine crashed into his room, so he ACTUALLY DIED!! And the girl lives, the only person who gave him the time of day... I struggled figuring out HOW Donnie traveled back to before the engine crashing through his room... Then I remembered THE LITTLE LINE THINGIES THAT CAME OUT OF PEOPLE'S CHESTS!! The entire movie was basically Donnie "living out his ghost life".

I highly recommend checking out the website that explains exactly what happens in this movie….a split timeline happens on that first night when Frank saves Donnie. Frank is a “manipulated dead” and needs to guide Donnie (the chosen one) to restoring the timeline before it becomes unstable and destroys both (hence the 30 day countdown)…everyone else is the “manipulated living” and unconsciously guide Donnie to his destiny (cellar door, Grandma death, etc)…..there is Tons more (Roberta sparrow was also a chosen one in the past and saved her universe and that’s why she wrote the book)…love this move and your reaction, 10/10 🤘🏼

Daviegh chase who plays the younger sister Samantha has had legal iissues involving drug charges. she started in the American version of the Ring and Also was.The original voice.actress.for Lilo in Lilo and Stitch. Also recently footage of P.diddy inviting her to a after party after a MTV awards show when she was 12 leading to some speculation that she have been a victim of abuse.

This is such a great movie. IMO, this is one of those movies where the theatrical cut is better than the Director's Cut. It just flows better, and leaves things to the imagination a little bit more. Not saying the DC is bad, I just prefer the theatrical cut.

Donnie Darko is a cult classic for a reason. As an angsty teenager at the time it came out who loved sci fi, it really resonated. But it's a great film regardless. Subscribed.

I love how surprised you were at every iconic actor's reveal. Is that MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL? Is that PATRICK SWAYZE? Is that JENNA MALONE? Is that DREW BARRYMORE? Is that SETH ROGAN.? I spent most of this movie confused as to where this was all leading, but the end wrapped it up nicely. Very sad. One of my all-time favorites. "Leon the Professional" is one of my favorites too! along with "The Sixth Sense" and "An American Werewolf in London". All had surprise sad endings.

Both Jake and Maggie were child actors from a very young age, and both had had moderate success as standalone actors prior to this film, but i think it certainly helped propel them both into the wider zeitgeist.
