It's not only the localization that the binaural (aka stereo) hearing restores. It also restores the ability to separate the speech from the background noise, since the sound becomes 3D and has depth again. Not to mention the effect called binaural loudness summation. The brain perceives the sum of the sound from two ears as much louder than the same sound from each ear alone.

I think I was born with single-sided deafness. My parents thought I was joking about it up until I was 10 (after moving from Mexico to the US). We had a mandatory hearing/vision exam.. they then sent a letter to my parents explaining that I had profound hearing loss in my left ear. They still never sought help for me. I'm now 31, and I'm looking for an ENT who can help treat my condition. I did have a professional hearing test in my mid-20s, in which I was diagnosed with single-sided deafness. My left arm never went up, in a controlled environment, using different hearing devices, if I had heard anything I would have raised that arm. Nothing. The ENT at the time said surgery could help but he never went into detail. I'm sick of not being able to tell where sounds are coming from, even at my age people still make fun of me. I hate it.

Since 2009, my hearing quality has diminished in my good ear. At least two surgeons think I should make the leap to Cochlear. I am just not happy about losing my minimally remaining hearing that I did have in my bad ear. Right now, I can hear a soft dial tone on a phone but not phone conversations.

Dr Cliff, as a single sided deaf person I have had remarkable results with hearing aids. One audiologist told me my ONLY route to hearing was a CI (wrong!). There is some research being done using Stem cells to re-grow hair cells. The ENT/neurotogist I saw after my stroke told me this was the future for persons with treatable single sided deafness where a CI would typically be recommended. Great video as usual, please continue to keep us informed and savvy consumers!

I have had significant hearing for most of my life. I am 80. About four years ago I was fitted with a Cochlear implant. Since then I have struggled to understand the speech it produces. My senses tell me I am not benefiting from the implant as much as I believe I should. My comprehension definitely is greater when my Cochlear hearings is operational. However I also find the sound produced by my Cochlear interferes with my ability to hear clearly. It is a very annoying pitch that is screechy sounding from my Cochlear. My audiologist has been unable to help me with this problem so far. I think I am probably doing as well As I can expect. Disappointing result.

I had good success with CROS hearing aids but wanted bilateral hearing back and went for a CI in the bad ear. I got the Cochlear Nucleus 7, which isn’t FDA approved. My experienced hasn’t been pleasurable. I get improvement when I Bluetooth to the external processor but my brain can’t migrate the artificial hearing from the right with the normal hearing on my left. I get a loud echo that drowns out speech that I can’t understand. It interferes with normal speech perception in the good ear. I’m about to try program six but I’m about to go back to CROS.

I couldn't walk, I was spinning, I started puking. He rushed me to ER. They thought i had an ear infection. I couldn't walk, eat, shower myself, feed myself, go to restroom .... they tried steroids, then sent me to an ENT, did steroid injections... nothing...I still couldn't walk, lift my head.. they sent me to a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.... for 30 days. Nothing. Im 100% deaf in my left ear, they referred me to UofM Ann arbor hospital, I go through vestibular therapy for my balance every 3 weeks. They made me a cross fit hearing aide. People talk in my left hearing aide, I hear everything in my right hearing aide which is the transmitter. I developed tinnitus in my deaf ear, it rings all day all night, loud loud. UofM said I had a rare virus called "labrynthitis." But through much research, it does not add up. I know it was a sensionneural hearing loss..... but labrynthitis? They said this virus happens to 4% of US a year. I was never sick, I never felt anything until this morning I woke up and couldn't walk. Good afternoon Dr. Cliff, all right? I am unilateral deaf since I understand myself. I am 40 years old and I use the cros hearing aid. It has helped me a lot, but they say that the cocclear implant is of much higher gain for the user. The doctor told me that I would have very good hearing in my deaf ear, but one thing is to listen, another to understand what I would be hearing with the CI, because my cerebral cortex is not used to hearing sound from the deaf side. My question is, is it worth fighting to get the surgery? From the experience you have, is there really any benefit to CI for those born deaf and over 40? Thank you in advance.

The aids she is trying interfere with using the scope. Do you know of a bluetooth stethoscope enabled for hearing aids ? The other key factor is her insurance will pay for part of the aids now bc the hearing loss was documented as a result of the chemo. If she doesn’t get aids now, then she bears the full cost.

I have a sudden sensorineural hearing loss with profound hearing loss in my right ear. I'm in the process of obtaining a BAHA evaluation audiogram for possible implantation of the Choclear Osia system. I'm confused between a cochlear implant and the Osia system. What is the difference, or are they one and the same? Is the surgical procedure for both the same?
@DrCliffAuD4 жыл бұрын
The OSIA is a bone anchored device that will send the vibration of sound through your skull to your better hearing ear. A Cochlear implant will stimulate the Nerve on the Profound ear side to provide hearing on the affected side. The surgical procedure will be different. The OSIA will be less invasive, but both are relatively simple outpatient procedures. The question you have to ask yourself is: Do you want to hear on your affected side, or do you want to hear all sound on your non-affected side? This will help you decide which one is right for you.

@@Maxlodge just my two cents: try the CROS device first. Not everyone can "process" hearing the signal from two ears with one ear, but it might work fine for you. I'd also test whether you really profit from the highest tech level (90); some of its advanced features are very much dependent on binaural interaction between *two* hearing aids and you might not gain enough to make it worth the money, because they do not work with the CROS device on one ear. An Audeo B30 or B50 might work just as well combined with a Phonak CROS B. Regarding a CI: that should be decided by you after detailed diagnosis and information in the hospital by ENT-specialists (at least here in Germany it's done that way ;))

So with the implant, you would have to wear both a hearing aid and have that other piece attached to the top of your head? That could be a deal breaker for most people.

There are wireless cochlear implants like the Kanso 2. Might still want to clip them to a shirt though because they are expensive. They also don’t sound like normal speech - voices are robotic but you can still understand speech.

Yeah but as of 2022 it’s still only 20 channels which sucks. A company like Apple would have 200 channel by now

What option other than suicide does someone have with one deaf ear with single layer of tympanic membrane and a very bad case of Eustachian tube dysfunction on the other ear. Constant crackling and headaches with pressure. ENt Doctors are useless and don’t help!!
