Cockatiel reacts to big Mantis

My cockatiel Gengi had a very spooky enconter ...a huge mantis! Cockatiels always reacts with suspicion to new things, she was a bit scared but i think the bug were even more... The birds wans't in danger, a cockatiel is way too big for a mantis like that.

Not a "big" mantis at all in relative terms. This is an adult female 'European' Mantis (Mantis religiosa; the natural range of this species extends south into North Africa and East through temperate East Asia). They vary greatly in size as adults, mainly as a result of levels of prey availability during their younger stages, and adult males are smaller than females. Compared to many giant tropical mantises and the widely introduced Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis), which like the European Mantis is now widely introduced in North America, they are quite small. Your Cockatiel may have been alarmed by the small false eyespots in the inner surface of the basal claw segments of this mantis. In high intensity aggressive/defensive display, adult female M. religiosa spread apart their still folded claws to expose these eyespots, and spread their 4 wings, while rubbing the tip of their abdomen against their hindwings to produce a rhythmic zipping sound. Some tropical mantises have a fake eyespot on each forewing and or hindwing which they display when performing aggressive/defensive displays.

Very interesting! It looked big compared to the ones I usually see here in Italy, maybe also because I meet younger ones more often

@@TielZone Ah! So you live within the natural range of these mantises! Big female Chinese Mantises are on average about 2X the length of adult female M. religiosa. I spent part of my childhood in Rome; wonderful city, very interesting and varied wildlife, wonderful people, and the best and healthiest food I enjoyed in Europe!
