Havanese are highly adaptable, but they can also find contentment in a consistent routine.
They are intelligent extroverts who take their jobs of being a watchdog and a comedian very seriously.
There are some additional pros and cons with this breed to consider as well.

Totally agree with everything here! Housebreaking was hard for my Havanese-he never quite learned how to signal. But he is the best dog I’ve ever had. They forgot to include their quirk about loving to tear up paper! 😂❤

No paper or cardboard or toilet paper is safe. I bought my wife 2 (brother n Sister) and we love them so much already. 5 months old and they drive our 3 yo Pug Otis crazy. Otis tries to keep up with them but they're little bundles of limitless energy. Still haven't completely broke them yet.

Best dog ever. Sweet, funny and very loving. I got him 3 years after my Bichon Frisée. The Bichon had him housebroken within a day. The Bichon, who was 17, recently died. I worried about the Havaneese, however, I was surprised at how quickly he adjusted. When friends asked how he was doing I told them that he’s a perpetually happy dog.

My dads Havanese is a bit of an exception to the rule. dad told me he was extremely Easy to house break (he still goes pee and poop outside on command at age 7), but once my dad passed and we brought him home he gained a ton of weight from less physical activity now and loves to bark at anything that moves outside, along with being extremely stubborn when it comes to walking, he will run and walk until he’s tired then he’s done. That’s it, he’s going home. Also he growls a lot but never bites or attacks anyone, just a bit territorial of me and our bedroom. He must be around me or hear me too 24/7 if I am home, or come with me to the store or for a car ride. Extremely loyal dog, stayed by my dads side for 12 hours when he had a heart attack in his bedroom until my dads friend showed up and found him.

My havanese was housetrained sooo quickly. I had a dog toilette for a short time and he was allowed to use the balcony in emergencies, but this was not necessary for long. We didn't have many accidents. Only one carpet obviously looked like a toilet to him. I removed the carpet and then it never happened again. Beside that: best dog in the world. I love him to bits. Funny, loving, loves to learn tricks. Easy to train.

I am strongly thinking about Havanese as my next dog. I've been a German Shepherd and Doberman girl so far, and think of myself as a fan of big dogs, but I met one of these little buggers running around looking like an absolute ray of sunshine at a big public event, and considered how my dogs have never been well mannered enough to enjoy big events with them, and folks are scared of them because they are large. I was totally enamored with this smiling, tiny, sociable pup, whereas I usually avoid even considering "toy breeds".

@@colingordon0986 So true. I adopted two Havanese puppies in 2010 (from different litters; while I was trying to choose, I fell hopelessly in love with both 😁) and they are weeks away from their 13th birthdays. They have been very healthy little girls, and I do make sure to brush their teeth almost every day. One likes to sleep now more than before, but the other one is still as energetic & playful as a puppy. I can’t imagine our family without them!

A good way we solved the issue of loneliness during work/school time was getting her another companion and putting them in a cage together. It’s supposed to fit a fully grown mastiff so it was able to fit both small dogs, two beds, and bowls of food and water. Once we did that both dogs calmed down. It’s been 10 years and they still use their cage and view it as a safe space to go when anxious

House training was a breeze with my Benji - it only took two times (as in, he only pee'd in the house twice before he realised it wasn't okay). And naturally, all these dogs need is a stern voice for them to understand that something is disproved of. The gentle approach is the ONLY best way. So yeah, that 'difficult to housetrain' statement isn't really true at all.

My Havanese will be 2 in November. She knows how to go outside, doesn't hesitate to wake me up to go outside but she still pees in the house, sometimes 3-4 times a week. She refuses to go on a potty pad, she would rather tear that to shreds. My Maltese will hold it for many hours, up to 12 in the past. Wookie pees in the car, on the front porch mat, on the stairs, wherever. It's so frustrating but she's dang cute with her crazy eyes!

All havanese have different characteristics. I have a male havanese that sheds horribly and gets brushed close to daily. He is low maintenance in my opinion as he is okay with laying in the same room as the family. He loves chewing and playing tug of war. House breaking was immediately taught and he did great. He never growls or barks unless I play too aggressively. Some characteristics contradict this video. Hope it helps

Have you considered that your dog may NOT have a pure bred Havanese? Maybe he's a cross with a maltese or other. My male Havanese has ALL the standard characteristics: NO shedding, NO dander, NO odor, great watchdog...only barks when necessary (someone at the door), loves other dogs, kids, people, happy, playful. intelligent. The one item in this video that I take issue with their making a blanket statement that the only way to avoid a dog "with tunnel vision" type behavior is to raise it as a puppy does a HUGE disservice to Havanese in rescue. I have a Havie and I also volunteer for Havanese Rescue. Please know that good training along with a loving and patient home can overcome most issues - including some behavioral issues as well. This is not only a person opinion but an opinion based in fact. Case in point, Dogs For The Deaf in Oregon gets ALL of their hearing and service dogs from shelters in their surrounding community. They have successfully taught rescues dogs of any age, breed, size, sex to notify owners for sounds, specific sounds, as well as other alert types. Moral of the story - you CAN indeed teach an 'old' dog new tricks! ;) Do not let this video dissuade you from adopting a Havie or Havie mix that is out there. Puppies come with their own set of frustrations such a potty training, destructive chewing, crate training (done in increments that takes time), the need for a series of shots (beyond the 12 wk puppy shots), etc. You also don't know what personality you may end up with. I paid nearly $5k for mine. But he came with many health checks and his line is excellent. You can pay when you get a high quality pup, or pay later in vet bills and heartache should it have genetic anomalies that compromises its health.

I inherited a havanese puppy who I was taking care of for about 2 years up in Idaho while I took care of my mom. He is used to always having my mom and his older sister around and a lot of nature and more freedom. We have since lost his sister and my mom and I currently live in dirty LA. I am starting over. Struggling with working outside of the house because he hates to be alone and when I bring him with me, he whines or barks at customers.. lol.. I tried to find him an older couple but I didn't and I don't know now how to let him go. We are very bonded.. How long can I leave him alone? I was doing 4 hours, come back home and have a break and walk him.. but i still hate it and barely can leave him.. I tend to do a four hour shift come back and walk him.. He's about 11-12 and He acts like a chubby puppy who does sleep a lot too.. He just hates being away from me.. and then I change my plans just to be with him.. and then suffer the consequences.. Any suggestions or ideas would greatly be appreciated. And is it okay to leave him while I work or should havanese always be with their person? I read somewhere 2-4 hours is okay for the havanese breed? Thoughts? Thanks again. Cheers!

@@honestychampmilland2007 Not exactly sure how it happened. She jumps up and down off the furniture, beds, etc. My vet and the surgeon both said that smaller dogs are prone to back injuries like this. And that once it happens, their health can very rapidly decline to the point they can die. When the surgeon called me with the final diagnosis, he said, “We need to do the surgery as soon as we can.” I asked, “How soon are we talking about?” He said, “My assistant just finished scrubbing and as soon as I hang up the phone, I’m going to operate.” The surgeon later said she would have died had he not done the surgery. This happened SOOO FAST. One minute she was fine. The next, she couldn’t move. I’m a retired cop and I don’t easily get emotional, but I broke down in front of my daughter. Thank God she has fully recovered now. She’s back to being her little 6 pounds of playful energy! She can’t jump up onto things like she did before, but that’s okay, she’s still with us! And that’s what’s important. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes!

if youre only away for 2-3 hours and you dont trust her to roam freely in the house just put her in a play pen or a crate. Keeping her in restricted spaces also helps her hold it longer and just incase she cant make sure to put pee pads there and youre good to go.

In my opinion they don't bark too much, so not without reason. You can definitely train them to not bark much or only twice for instance. You should not take it away completely from any dog. They should be allowed to make themselves heard.

Havanese are not native to Cuba. They are native to Italy and Spain and were brought as gifts by traders to the cuban aristocracy. Sadly there are no havanese left in havana or Cuba and haven't been for over half a century. Also they don't "shed" at all, like us, their hair will keep growing until it it is cut .

A shelter dog is fine if you want a pit bull. I have a special needs child and refuse to have a dog with a massive jaw as you never know. They may be friendly but they have the potential to do serious harm. I have been trying and trying to get a small dog from a shelter. I am fine with a mix, in fact, a mixed breed would probably be healthier and cheaper to insure. I cannot have a big dog. When you get older they are harder to manage. All the shelters that I call say their small dogs are adopted quickly and have multiple applications. We don't all have a budget to feed a large dog nor the room for one either, so guess what I maybe buying a havanese from a family that is a couple of years old at a price that is similar to the price that rescue organizations ask and with out the long adoption applications, multiple references, fence requirements, the curriculum vitae, etc. that the rescues ask for. So not everyone is looking for a designer dog. Some of us are just looking for a small affordable dog and it seems like so many other people are also. .

@@lorimav - My 10 year old Labrador Retriever, Baxter, died in Jan 2021. I was heart broken. At the local shelter they had a lot of Pit Bulls. I too don't want a potentially dangerous dog around. (Although I have seen videos here on YT of really wonderful PBs). But I decided to look for another breed. Last month at the local no-kill shelter, I found a "miniature" Lab mix at only half the weight of my beloved Baxter. I adopted him and named him Riley. He is a real hell raiser. Wildest dog I have ever seen. I am retired and it's all I can do to keep up with him. After the first 2 weeks I considered taking him back but decided to keep him. I have been working to settle him down and get him to behave. It's going to be a difficult task but I think with consistent, firm and gentle training, he will be a really good dog. It's just going to take time.
