I visited the site back on 2019 at the end of the last day. Only two souls in the car park and no flying. Happy just to have found the field and can understand its appeal. I’m from New Zealand.

Excellent photography. Wonderful memories of sunny days at Fairlop in the late forties. The models are familiar but the fliers have turned into grandads. So much more worthwhile than endless video0games.

love the older floater planes! just nice looking, very graceful and can glide down if engine stalls. Also got to love the reliable OS, satio and other 4 strokes. pays to have a nice reliable engine at the front pulling your scratch built plane.

Please, can anyone tell me what is that white and blue wonderful model at 01:55 and whose design is it?... Please! I would like to search if it is comercially available or by a plan!... It's a very nice model with a nice flying/gliding behaviour and it's kind a like Dynaflite's "Butterfly"! There are gorgeous models on the video - it's a very nice video, Mark, thank you! - and they challenge us to go, build and fly a model! I wish I was there at the show! Many greetings from Portugal! Thank you very, very much Mark for your answer and your trouble on answering (link to outerzone, included)! Ah, nostalgia... Nostalgia's not what it was back in my day [joke]. Today's 2.4GHz radios are excellent, but I do miss the old 27MHz etiquette of checking for a free channel (there were originally only 6, but they introduced another 6 'in-between' frequencies later on). You'd swap crystals if necessary, getting dirty looks if you were using a 'split' frequency [because some receivers weren't great at rejecting interference from nearby channels]. Then you'd check you were displaying the right channel ribbon (which was also a handy wind-direction indicator), before taking the coloured clothes-peg off the all-important peg board and clipping it onto your Tx's (4' long!) aerial before flying. You couldn't fly without the right peg on your aerial; it meant the channel was already in use. Sessions were also more relaxed when you could only have a couple of models SAFELY airborne at once (because of the dodgy receivers which were prone to responding to adjacent channel interference). If your channel was in use, you'd watch the planes, listen to the larks, have a cup of tea and a bag of crisps and relax till your frequency was free. Nowadays, with unlimited reliable frequency options, things can get a bit hectic.
