🤯We have shared A LOT of Hydroponic Nutrient Experiments for Microgreens, but we hadn't dove into Soil Additives....until now! A company called VermisTerra was kind enough to send us some of their Worm Castings for Free, so that we could start dabbling into a new world of Nutrient additives. In this new KZbin video we compare Coco Coir with no Additives to Coco Coir with added Worm Castings for growing Microgreens. The results we got were very interesting and have given us the push to continue to test this product out in various ways as we discover the world of Soil Additives for Indoor Growing!👨‍🌾👩‍ Hope y'all enjoy the video!!

Yes you have to harvest it earlier. I am using a worm compost for that exact reason. It will get me sooner to the harvest point so I can rotate faster my microgreens. That means overall less cost of electricity, wather, rent per one crop.

I’m wondering if you’re so used to the taste of what your brassicas taste like normally, if that creates an unconscious bias towards that flavor? What if, say tomorrow, you had someone who’s not used to the taste of microgreens do the same taste test with the same microgreens you used today? 🤷‍♀️ It’d be interesting to see the comparison.

So glad to see more experiments with nutrients, thank you! Wondering if worm castings could be used as a liquid nutrient, only applied in bottom watering, similar to OceanSolution or the ones from General Hydroponics or Fox Farm? If so, it would seem it could be used with re-usable mediums such as the dehydration sheets, or perlite. Dilution in a liquid form might also lower the cost factor, perhaps?

@drpk6514

While worm casting has more nutrients, perhaps the main thing is the symbiotic bacteria as well as the secondary metabolites such as plant hormones that it carries. Thats why the plants were a bit more developed. Probably if you picked them a day earlier they would have tasted similar to a day after on coco peat alone.

Something that is extremely vital is to do some research into heavy metal content of all these products, especially lead. Most companies are very cagey in their disclosure. One site that I know of to get some objective information is: apps1.cdfa.ca.gov/fertilizerproducts/. When you look up the product, you need to type in the parent company.

I have settled on cococoir as a grow medium and, until recently, used Ocean Solution as a fertiliser. I did my own experiment on Kale a couple of months ago: OS v Nettle Tea, which I make myself from stinging nettles growing on my land and which I have used as a general fertilser for all sorts of crops. The Nettle Tea stinks to high heaven so has to be kept well corked up in a bottle. The difference in growth was marginal, slightly in favour of the OS, but the Nettle Tea bottom watered (10:1 water:Tea) Kale had a distinctly superior taste and, of course, is free as I make it myself. I have therefore moved exclusively the use of the Nettle Tea and am happy with the results. Assuming you have stinging nettles in the US (Texas?) do you fancy making a batch of tea and doing a comparison with your favourite fertilizer? Thanks for your efforts and the useful information in your videos. I have learned so much from you.
