Having an understanding on how castings actually work would be beneficial in this case. Casting are long term soil amendments. They give a boost through out the entire growing process but the results need to be measured in an over all view. If you were too let those plants grow to full maturity the over all end result is far better than most other things. And when you add them to organic soil or compost you can see, feel, and taste the difference they make. The most beneficial aspect of castings is their ability to sustain microbes and fungi so they have the opportunity to attach to the roots and help the plant up take more nutrients. That process takes time. Maybe in your application worm tea would be a better option but it takes very little. The ratio is usually 10 to 1. Or 20 to 1. Less is better and you wont deal with so much bitterness.

We need to see the yield with straight coir to see if worm casting made a difference at all.

@@OnTheGrow also measuring the amount of seeds for each grow pot makes it more even for testing, starting with equal amounts evens the playing field. The light yellowness of the leaves in the coco coir makes sense, its a magnesium lack and coco coir must be soaked with cal-mag cause the coco will suck up any magnesium before the roots can pull it in.

was the coco buffered? also was the soil amended with nutrients and minerals?

You did till us " try different things " so I did. I only use green tray with paper napkin and water. With tiny little seeds like alfalfa first 2days kept in black out .after germination I did put couple of heavy books on top. Next day was many little roots came through paper napkin. Thank you for all education 🙏

Can you try the Vermistera worm tea instead of their worm castings. Also if you keep using worm casting. Can you do a daily taste test to see if they taste different each day.

Daily taste tests might be needed here, Is it the worm castings, or the time that is changing the flavor? Hmm. So one of the main benefits of worm castings is that it's microbially active which facilities plant nutrient exchange in the rhizosphere. The NPK fertilizer value however is completely dependent on the feedstock given to the worms. Worms castings from manure vs worm castings from glass/tree clippings are going to deliver very different results. It looks like this brand generally has a very low fertilizer value (from the label), so most of the benefit you'll see comes from it's ability to act as a biological inoculant. Potting soil tends to be fairly inert (most commercially available ones are pasteurized for safety) but should have the right texture/nutrients. Coco coir is both biologically inert and non-nutritious, it just provides structure and water retention. I would be really curious to see an experiment where you actually mix the vermicast with the potting mix, I suspect you'll see the best results.

I add micro nutrients to my worm farm so my castings are super fortified, I wonder if that will make a big difference. I'll try it out but probably use 2 cups new vs 2 cups castings as the castings are bedded in coir. You might have had better with 2 cups also

Gah… yeah, we hired someone to help with customer service for a moment and they completely dropped the ball… also no longer works for us. Adding micronutrients definitely helps… you’ll generally notice better coloration and healthier crops! Sometimes faster growth too… hope that helps!

Added flavor and appearance can come from adding lava meal for micronutrients and terpenes from ordinary tea or coffee, for instance. (Also adds caffeine and nitrogen.)

I use worm castings straight off the ground in my garden. (You can see a pile on the surface of the beds where a worm is residing) A few tablespoons in a half gallon of rainwater is wonderful nitrogen rich fertilizer. And they are free.

How many trays would you get from the burpee (8 qrts?) bag? From 3 cup Calc. I got about 11 trays. Does that seem right? Curious of cost effect ness Thank you. Also, I want to grow these for my chickens during winter. Do you think that soil is safe for the chickens. Thank you so much for teaching me how to grow Microgreens. I found the burpee soil at Ace hardware. Have to order it online and they will deliver free to the store. $6.99 per 8 qrt bag. Amazon’s price is doubled that cost 😔

Yeah, we get it from Ace, but we are always searching for better sources. We used to buy it in a small town we lived in, in normal size bags for under $6.00 per bag. We're not fans of the tiny bags either... but the soil works really well.

Hi, I also experiment with different substrates. Hemp mats are most inconsistent (non NFT biuld). Like you showed coco coir is good but the flavor is not outstanding. Now I'm also trying soil (BioBizz All-Mix). What I also like to try is super soil. In my country it's used for bio CBD production and reused for the whole year. After that it will be mixed again with nutriens, compost, wormcastings etc and let it compost for a while. This could be a great alternative to other soils which is thrown away (just compost for gardening). Have a look on that, I'm interested what your opinion is about it 😁 PS: As soluition I use a mix of BioBizz BIO-GROW, ROOT-JUICE, BIO-HEAVEN and ACTI-VERA.

What did you use, 3 cups in each tray? Try 2 cups of soil, mixed with half a cup of coco and half a cup of worm castings. That equals three. See how they grow in that mixture.
