Microgreens - Does Adding Nutrients Help!? - Purple Broccoli - On The Grow

💥Today CJ has a new experiment where we compare adding nutrients to growing microgreens against using only tap water to grow microgreens...
In this video we grow four trays of broccoli microgreens on Terrafibre, which is a Hemp Grow Mat, and we seeded this grow medium with 25 grams of seed per tray. All 4 trays went through the exact same germination process, but some germinated slower than others. Those trays that germinated slower, we made our nutrient group and watered them with a Hydroponic Nutrient called Ocean Solution 2-0-3. Since they were already behind on growth, if they were able to catch up, it could show that adding nutrients to their water can increase the rate of growth.
🤔We've heard people say that adding nutrients to microgreens doesn't provide them with any benefits... we think the results speak for themselves and we even gave water a a heads start in growth...... 😎
✅Let's just say it turned out how we expected...but how big of a difference was it!?
*Be sure to check out ALL of our other Hydroponic Nutrient experiments on our KZbin Channel - we even have some Soil Additive videos too*

I didnt consider addding a supplement to the water . So thanks. Henry on Maui

Thank you so much for the support! We have not yet made a video specifically on lighting, but that is in the works to be one of the first videos for 2020. Right now what we suggest for lights are the 18watt LED's we've been using for a few months with great results. They are 6500K and put out 2,000 lumens each... We try to get an output minimum of 6,000 lumens per shelf so we use 3 of the LED's per shelf. Here's the link to our lighting section of products we've used and works well. It looks like the main lights we use are out of stock so we will try and update with similar lights: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=300RR4HQRM5I9

So glad you shared your experiment with worm castings; I was wondering if a worm casting tea would be appropriate for microgreens. My concern was whether they might introduce undesirable microbes to an edible. You did not mention this, and since you used a compost tea, rather than a direct to plant contact application, and I know you also water only the roots, my guess is that such a problem is mitigated by these practices. When I had a full garden here in Arizona, I used to feverishly search for worm castings, even making a special trip to the next state over, just to find it because my vegetables, fruits, herbs, roses, and trees loved them so much. I wonder if it might work to add the castings to the Coco Coir medium, then water with Ocean Solution. I may try that, now that I know the worm casting tea can be used on Microgreens. Believe me, in my day, there were plenty of kids that were eating dirt as a regular snack from all those mud pies we used to make, and I grew up in the Midwest, where there are plenty of worms casting their cares into that black soil. As far I know, no one ever died from eating dirt. Appreciate all you do for this community.

I am a worm farmer from Capetown South Africa... if you would allow me a moment to add a thought... I love the way you compared these trays. however, on the 4th tray, you have a little clash of nutrients going on, this is why very little different really great happened in that tray. Your solution you used actually kills the natural bacteria in the worm tea. so in effect, it made it just dead nutrients with none of the bacteria left to benefit the growth going on in the stems. Worm castings can not be mixed with a chemical, saline or petrochemical-based fertilizer it kills it. worm castings are not really great for microgreens as this type of greens are still extracting most of its energy needs from the seed and worm castings and teas and all the microbial life it contains only really kicks in after this phase of growth. Keep in mind though that your second tray with only worm castings was your only real "organic" tray... proofing that it is possible to do microgreens organically. Just my 2 cents.
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input! I am curious then how most compost teas are able to be successful if they have worm castings in addition to salts (saline) added. It seems like people are getting amazing results when their castings are combined with other nutrients/minerals so that raises some flags when you say that it kills everything when combined. I’m asking because I am very new to compost teas, so I don’t understand how the organic minerals added killed the bacteria. I understand that compost teas are generally best for longer grows as it is about the microbial live more than anything... Also, that tray was WAY behind everything else and it managed to catch up, so I am not seeing that it performed worse than anything else. The fact that it made it to the end is amazing really...
@thegreenviking1422
@thegreenviking1422 4 жыл бұрын
@@OnTheGrow I should probably explain in more detail but it hard in this little chat space. 100% organic fertilizers with no added chemicals are really hard to find. most fertilizers are chemical-based or boosted. Worm Tea is probably one of the only real 100% organic fertilizer mixes you get. (maybe some compost teas also might be) . What you need to consider with worm tea is that it is not just a fertilizer, so the tea does not just have the necessary NPK rating but it is also a living entity. its a living organism in liquid form teeming with biological life. this bio-life is what most benefits plants in its growing. The bacteria and other living organisms in the tea are also what regenerate soil from dead dirt to living soil. unfortunately, CHEMICAL fertilizers kill this boi-life and turn worm tea into plain NPK loaded liquid. :) I hope this makes sense. let me add this... adding work tea is always a good idea, probably the best idea, but mixing it with NON-ORGANIC chemical fertilizers defeats the point. :)

I really like your videos, because of how rich in information they are and how many different techniques you are testing. The question for me personally is though, if the amount of nutrient in the plant benefit of the nutrients in the water as well. If it just increases the size (so basically just increasing water inside the plant), people would have to buy more to reap the same benefits. is a " larger crop" a better tasting crop? can we get a blind taste test panel? - thanks for all your work; you are becoming a great asset to the community
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We’re super honest about taste and I feel a blind taste test would be excessive but we could do it. Generally, there is very little difference in taste. As for taller vs shorter, generally, the very small crops have more flavor, but that is because they are in a more adolescent phase of growth. For example, arugula will be very peppery at a smaller/adolescent phase of growth, so we prefer to grow ours out longer to make them more mild in pepper taste. It is really whatever you’re looking for. The main point of adding nutrients is that you get to different “phases” of growth quicker. Sometimes the nutrient will effect the flavor and appearance. It all depends on the crop.

Would love to see a test with seaweed extract or kelp. In nature it is the fastest growing plant i think. Most formulas are full of auxins and cytokinin which are natural plant growth hormones. it also has up to 70 beneficial trace minerals from the sea. Great way to increase quality from my experience(not microgreens). My growing tools are NPK+ micro and macro nutrients+ kelp and vitamins+ carbohydrates(feed bacteria and fungi), amino acids(improve nutrient uptake) and beneficial bacteria. Also from my knowledge, compost teas are rather difficult to get right. You need to have the right bubbling time(too long and beneficial die, too short and not enough are produced), high quality castings that contain beneficial bacteria that can be cultured( not all castings are created equal), right temperature in order to culture the right aerobic microbiology, a hefty air stone that won't get clogged. Pretty sure farms that use compost teas actually take a look at their teas under a microscope to see what they've cultured as it's not always 100% consistent and some teas don't turn out.

CJ, you could try a wood ash solution added with some source of Nitrogen and pH balanced. Ashes are what's left behind after the removal by burning of all organic matter in a vegetable tissue, wood, on this case. They are well known as a source of potassium, but most likely will hold many more micronutrients as well.

We always use the minimum suggested on the labels! I can't remember exactly for MaxiGro but I think it was around the 1tsp per gallon mark. We begin adding nutrients once the plants are introduced into the light. We noticed that adding nutrients too soon can cause slower germination. So mist them normally with regular water until they are germinated and growing well and then when they are introduced to light, you can begin bottom-watering in the nutrients. I'm willing to bet the worm casting tea didn't do great for the microgreens compared to the Ocean Solution because of not having long enough for bacteria to break it down like you suggested might be the case. When I use sterile compost in sterile soil, it takes a good long while to start really seeing the benefits of it, where in an established soil bed, there is an active bacteria colony ready to break it down.

The cotyledons are lighter on the one tray because the nutrient solution probably dropped your ph in the medium (not the actual solution you ph'ed) over time. When feeding substrates u always gotta read runoff and the ph of your standing water in the tray after a day. If it's too high lower the alkalinity of your feed to adjust the medium and standing water runoff/wick water and vice versa

Absolutely! The challenge is finding a way to measure the nutrient density of plants. Supposedly a BRIX meter would work, but it only measures the sugar levels of the plants... @@OnTheGrow I wouldn't bother with tea too much! When you make actual worm tea (aerated over a period of time), the whole idea would be to explode the microbial population using a sugar source. That would work great in real soil where microbes have a wonderful function. In your case, you use in inert medium (coco) where microbes will not perform much of a function at all. You might get a bit a leach NPK out of the castings but not more than directly mixing worm castings in coco or peat . That is an experiment i would like to see! Keep experimenting!

Hi! Do you guys think ocean solution would be beneficial for microgreens grown in soil? My micro arugula leaves come out very small with just plain water (all other micros are fine) but now I’m wondering if adding ocean solution to the mix can improve cotyledon size of my micro arugula. Thanks in advance!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
It could potentially "burn" the plants with too much fertilizer since soils already have some nutrients in it... We have the same issue with arugula, it is just one of those crops that takes a lot longer to grow in size once its introduced to light. We do get faster growth with it while using nutrients, but I know from past tests when we mix more fertilizers into soils, the potential to burn the plants is quite high depending on your soil mix. If you can grow the arugula in coco coir or peat moss and then add nutrients, I think you'll have great results. Hope that helps!

the color is given by the light .. in my opinion you could improve the quality of the lighting by supplying lamps with a more homogeneous spectrum or maybe they are only old and need to be changed, if they are led not but if they are neon after 6 months - one year they lose efficacy .. another thing is the diffusion, if you notice the central part of the trays does not take the same light of the sides creating that depression in which the plants remain lower in all the trays .. however you produce beautiful products and also beautiful videos, I don't know you and I do not know yet how you pack but for what I have seen you are serious .. greetings

This is a good experiment.. with two big problems. 1. The size of the seed matters.. small seeds like broccoli and lettuce are going to need nutrients much earlier than things like peas or sunflowers. 2. Days to harvest, again you are picking slower varieties of microgreens. Honestly, I just use nutrients anyway because it is not expensive and it definitely isn't doing any harm.

CJ mentioned in the second half of the video about doing a taste comparison... did I miss those results? I am not at all new to gardening (my specialty is a couple of hydroponic methods) and to make a long story short, with farming/growing micro greens for resale, what is most important? What I mean is in reference to size/color/taste. from what I have picked up, I think that color (deeper & richer colors are better) and also taste (consistency & proper taste for the variety) are far more important that size and even that too large of "micro" greens can be really bad for a few reasons. I am asking with the assumption that I would be selling them for human consumption and not for garnish or for livestock consumption. Thank you all ahead of time!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Agreed that size isn't everything and that the main concern is flavor and appearance. The main point of this test was to show that I could have harvested the nutrient added one several days before the other groups and got the same results, just a faster growth time. Generally, all of our produce tastes really great no matter the source of nutrients, except for Sea-90... Sea-90 made our produce taste like saltwater when we used it... I think we used too much perhaps? But generally, everything has a very similar taste no matter if it is soil or hydroponic, nutrients or no nutrients. We also grow all of our produce for the one goal of eating eat. We don't think using micros as a garnish is doing them justice and feeding them to animals is great, but we want our microgreens to be consumed in large quantities! All of our customers have loved the flavors of our greens and even when I give people organic soil grown and then the next week organic hydroponically grown, no one has ever said they taste different. Everyone really just enjoys them :)

When you grow in soil, new seeds do poorly in worm castings. Only after the plant has grown for a week or two will you transplant into soil with lots of worm castings. In fact the more worm castings the better for transplants. But none needed for the seed in the first week or two. Magnesium is the green part but also you might need a better light. Do you add this nutrient for every watering or just the initial watering

Great question Kenneth! We only began adding nutrients after the first 5 days of growth. Once we started to add the nutrient water, we continued to do it twice a day (or as needed) for the remainder of the grow. We noticed that sometimes adding nutrients too soon will slow down growth instead of helping speed it up.
