For anyone wondering about regulations: A license is required to hunt Coconut crabs and there is a size limitation. During the hunting season, a Coconut crab can only be taken if it is over three inches (7.5cm) across the back shell (carapace). A female crab, regardless of size, may not be taken when it is carrying eggs beneath the abdomen (berried). The only legal means of taking Coconut crabs is by hand. The bag limit is five with a total season limit of ten per person. The sale of Coconut crabs captured in the CNMI is prohibited. The preserving or mounting of Coconut crabs for display purposes or the sale of such crabs within the CNMI is also prohibited.
@josephledux85985 жыл бұрын
I figured as such. Thanks for the clarification. In recent human history it's not usually human hunting that causes a species to become endangered (exceptions: carrier pigeon and American bison, also Louisiana alligator) but rather climate change and/or habitat destruction.

I was in Rota back in 1969 led there by a friend named David Q. He owned a boat and the hotel there on the island and he showed us the island life including the Coconut Crab. We had them roasted with spices and OMG...they are truly a delicacy. The people of Rota were very nice to us and they made sure we had a great time. Like you said, do something out of the box and see the world. I would go back in a heartbeat. The real irony was that there were crabs walking around in places like that beach where you got the bait when I was there. I'm talking big coconut crabs too. Oh...and they would break your finger. So happy to see you experience catching and cooking Coconut Crabs in the Marianas Islands. As you saw, they have a very thick and tough shell, and the pinchers are very dangerous. They've been known to easily sever a man's fingers. That lady prepared a fancy recipe; stuffing the body cap with the pre-cooked meat, pumpkin tips, garlic, onions and tomally, and cooking it all again in coconut milk. A simple more common preparation would be to second cook them for a short while in coconut milk with the shells cracked but still on. Serve over rice with the coconut milk sauce from the pot. Yum! The meat is so delicious and sweet! It's the crab of choice for me. My Dad says he always put a little vinegar in the parboil water to help loosen up the meat froom the shell, same like you suggested. BTW, deer meat caught on island and cooked in seasonings and coconut milk is the best! It's my most favorite soup and part of my most precious memories of my dad, his brother and boy cousins hunting, fishing and cooking on the neighboring island of Guam. The crabs you guys caught were small ones compared to the ones I remember Dad catching. They were between 2 to 3 feet across, pincher to pincher, real scary monsters! Actually, I subscribed to your channel years ago because what you love sharing with us viewers reminds me of them and those days. I look forward to the rest of your experiences in the Marianas and beyond. Thanks and great job!

What are pumpkin tips? Do you mean pumpkin leaves? I am glad to learn the tip about adding distilled white vinegar to the water to make crab meat not stick to the shell.
@donneone6 жыл бұрын
@@gailfeddern7798 - PK's mom used what she called "pimpkin tips" in her stuffed crab mixture. The tips are only the youngest part of the pumpkin vine. It's the most tender part that includes the stem, leaves and curly cues.; usually the last 1 to 2 feet of the tip of the vine, hence "pumpkin tips". It's fuzzy so before cooking it's bestt when peeled to remove the fuzz and threads much like one would peel celery stalks.

To bad this dummy didn’t put his finger in the crabs claw. He would have realized if it can rip the husk of a coconut with it’s pinchers, ripping a finger off a human hand, is effortless. Mean while he would be screaming in pain, and the crab would have gotten his revenge before he died. This guy acts like he’s a cop in Florida. No more like, Utah, trying to arrest a nurse, or maybe New Jersey, trying to arrest a mom on the beach who won’t give him her phone number.🦀

Actually he gave him the lighter to show him exactly what would happen. the lighter which is harder then most peoples fingers shows little resistance to the pressure exerted by an average size crab. there are many cases on Guam and CNMI in which people have had fingers sheered off completely. also biologists have done studies in which they have found that do to the high amount of crabs here in the Marianas islands (Guam and the CNMI) without large natural predators they have spawned many generations of what they call prime specimens that exceed above average levels of strength or pressure of claw compression and limb manipulation (husking of coconuts and other forms of hard incased fruits cracking the shells of other land invertebrates and mollusks and bird eggs also enlarging the openings of crevices of volcanic rock to retrieve prey grabbing onto the cliff sides sometimes being fully inverted supporting its weight which can exceed up to 10 pounds) speed (again moving a large amount of weight think of how fast old world Tarantulas move now enlarge it by 5x) and shell hardness or Density (do to the presence of calcium in some of the flora and fauna they feed upon) compared to specimens from other regions and countries. so Stevo getting his but pinched by one on wild boys in Indonesia and only leaving a bruise is average compared to one from here where it would have been a laceration,a deep gaping laceration. Giving that the crab shown in this video is of average size and a decent set of pincers it would crush and shatter the bone probably causing irreparable damage if not cutting off the finger completely. And trust me that crab is average I’ve seen some here on Guam that dwarf that. And given that there on the island of Rota believe me when I tell you they got some real monster size ones there 3x bigger then the one in this video that sometimes we say they’re Tao Tao Mona which is a word for our ancestors spirit or ancient one or literally slang for nope nope hell naw nature you scary 😱

Vinegar may make the shell a bit easier to crack too. You make bone broth with a bit of apple cider vinegar because it renders calcium from bones and other tissues like ligaments and tendons.

This takes me back to happy tropical memories. One of my friends family owned a private island in the Maldives, and we would go there every year and one of the things we did was hunt coconut crabs. It was so much fun, the island was full of big huge ones. Fishing was also amazing. They sold the island years ago and now there’s a resort there. Really miss the island as it was.

I wore flip flops hiking in the woods once (long story, but the upshot was that I hadn't planned on hiking). I don't know exactly what happened, but the next day my ankle was swollen to twice its normal size and I couldn't put any weight on it at all. Now I make sure to wear proper boots if I'm going to be in the woods - especially if it isn't flat.
