I lived in NYC for 11 years and saw countless shows, including this one. The performance by Ms. Streep that night was the best acting I will ever see in my life. I had no idea a performance like that was possible - and there's no way I can explain what made it so good; I have no clue. Even after 3 hours, for her curtain call, the audience JUMPED to their feet pushed by an irresistible force acknowledging the greatness of the performance.

I love this. Seeing Meryl act on stage is just so inspiring and interesting. I would have given anything to see this play with her in it !

Streep's "managing to inject some humanity" into the character means that the reporter did not get out of the show what Brecht intended her to get from it.
@BonnieVanguardia5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Brecht did not intend for her to be stripped entirely of her humanity. In his play notes he discusses how Helene Weigel played her with some sense of nobility and in the Song of the Grand Capitulation she is self-aware of her own depravity.

You can see the 'Theatre of War' (making of Mother Courage) on Netflix stream.

If the report is anything to go by, then they have utterly failed at staging it. The Cook isn't supposed to be a "soulless monster" (and Brecht makes this point himself) and the Priest isn't supposed to be "Weaselly".

林龙峰 I always saw the Cook and the Chaplain as the chances for if not happiness, then maybe a bit of peace that Mother (Anna) doesn't go for, being that both of them offer her a way out of the war wagon. I love Kevin Kline as a theatre actor, the only other actor I've seen on stage that I've liked better was Alan Rickman (SOOOOOO GLAD I SAW HIM ON STAGE!!!). But you're right it sounds like this wasn't Brecht's Mother Courage, but something else.

Just that 'Dessau was inspired by Kurt Weil' - I don't that is true. Dessau was a composer in his own right - and excellent. But they had a common tradition to grow from and oppose to.

@TheClemming I think it really depends on whether you think Brecht is good or not...and loads of plays need the odd cut. Hamlet being one.
@TheClemming14 жыл бұрын
I hate this praising of Streep - as if she was the only actress ever managing to interpret Mutter Courage well. I saw it at Berliner Ensemble. Those guys know what Brecht is all about. "The play needs some cutting!! The woman must be insane! Is she talking about commercial or artistic succes. Apparently in America that is one and the same thing. SAD! Anyway I really respect Meryl Streep - even though she is doing what any trained European stage actor would do. Nothing more. Nothing less.
