I'm surprised no one's mentioned it yet, but she's very much singing lots of gibberish. So glad you guys have discovered this masterpiece. Babby, my guy! We dig the same tracks! Cherry-Coloured Funk and Fifty-Fifty Clown are my absolute faves from this album. Listen to more, even if it's not a recorded reaction. Treasure is awesome. Four-Calendar Cafe, Blue Bell Knoll, Milk & Kisses, and The Pink Opaque all have amazing tracks on them.

Odd comment. This was the beginning of the era when the vocals became comprehensible - by her standards anyway. The only real "gibberish" era was Blue Bell Knoll era. At other times, when you get used to the mispronunciations and playing with dialecs, it's possible to discern a lot of what she's saying - if you have the literary reference points. (There's lots of bricolage going on).

@@Grithron2 Is it fair to say a lot of it's nonsense then? Because even if she's not using gibberish on this and other albums the lyrics still don't make any kind of sense. Kudos to you if you can interpret them all.

@@Grithron2 The ‘gibberish’ (opera singers call it ‘coloratura’, is the very thing that’s most appealing about the Cocteau Twins. This album is their WORST. Too commercial, to many comprehensible lyrics. Bluebell knoll was the Best production wise with lots of variety, but the rawness and anger of Garlands is PURE Cocteau Twins.

Great reaction you guys! This album is a masterpiece. It sounds like a bit easy listening at first, but when you have heard it a few times all the songs just settles in. They beautifully all just fits. My personal favourite is 'I wear your ring'. The end of that one is just heavenly, and I wish it would last forever.

It's fun seeing Gen-Zers trying on godly music like CT for the first time. It feel like nothing as creative and special as the stuff I got into as a teenager in the late 80s/early 90s will ever happen again. An inauspicious start with Babby(?!) saying "Cocktail Twins" at the very beginning! It's funny that Jerry actually looks like Robin Guthrie (CT guitarist) but seems more of a superficial bro-dude. 🙃 Come to think of it, their reaction is pretty much what mine was at first, "this is nice"... and then it's like the more I listened to it over the years, the more I liked it and the more I liked it until eventually I was an utter fanatic.

Bush is in my top 5 artists of all time and so are the COCTEAU TWINS so I was so happy to find this on your channel. Other great albums from them are TREASURE, THE PINK OPAQUE, VICTORIALAND. Thanks for listening outside the norm from the other KZbinrs.

The Cocteau twins were total genius, they produced the most gorgeous music in the 80s/90s. All there albums are brilliant but heaven or Las Vegas is a total masterpiece. Loved your reaction. I started with this album a year or two ago and they've become one of my favourite bands. I always heard about since I'm a big MBV fan and they're cited as an influence. They just make heavenly, gorgeous music. Especially Cherry Coloured Funk and 50/50 Clown, just had me doing double takes. I had to stop what I was doing and listen again. To me, every other album is worth exploring but IMO if you want a similar vibe, transcendent beauty you'd most enjoy Blue Bell Knoll. It has to me the catchiest and most beautiful songs in Caroline's Fingers and Cico Buff. Everything else is brilliant too.

This was very nice to watch,....I just can't stop myself from clarifying something. Cocteau Twins were pop/rock, they didn't do genre music. "Dream pop" was a descriptor coined by contemporary music journalists to describe the way certain bands/artists of that era sounded like-- Cocteau Twins, Julee Cruise, the Sundays, etc. It sounds pedanticI lol but it's true.

My first video I’m watching from you guys …CT made impossibly beautiful music, it certainly changed my life. They inspired many bands that came after (Beach House for example) but nobody ever really compared and I doubt anyone ever will. “Treasure” is their next most famous record…less polished production, more gothic, but just as beautiful. Then “Blue Bell Knoll” which came out in between the two. But all of their albums as well as their EPs are worth hearing, though their debut is very dark/goth and not dream pop at all.

Also... I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but you know after Heaven or Las Vegas where you say it's just a friendly Jefferson Starship-like song and beat, but without the fake drums (delightful quote, by the way!)? A bit of trivia: All the drums on this entire album are fake. Drum machines! Not an acoustic drum or percussion on the entire LP! Mostly programmed by Robin Guthrie.

These lyrics don't really matter. If you've read them, you'll realize they're way too oblique to be immediately relatable. They're very artsy and weird, but they seem to center around the idea of pregnancy, childbirth, babies, and parenthood. EDIT: I agree. This should not be possible. This should be forbidden knowledge.

Yeah, Fotze is german and it basically is an insult, translated it means "c*nt", but could also be used in the meaning of "b*tch" as well. I don't know why they did chose this word for this title....

These are the lyrics to CHERRY COLOURED FUNK. Elizabeth Fraser mostly used her voice as an instrument and would either not say words or just use words phonetically to make the sound she wanted to achieve. This album was made around the time she actually started writing lyrics. Beetles and eggs and blues and pour a little everything else You steam a lens stable eyes and glass Not get pissed off through my bird lips as good news Still we can find our love down from behind Down far behind this fabulous, my turn rules Beetles and eggs and blues and bells and eggs and then blued Beetles and eggs and blues and pour a little everything else You steam a lens stable eyes and glass Not get pissed off through my bird lips as good news You'll hang the hearts black and dull as the night We hanged your pass and start being as you in ecstasy Still being cried and laughed at before Should I be sewn in hugged I can by not saying Still being cried and laughed at from light to blue And should I be hugged and tugged down through this tiger's masque? And should I be sung and unbroken by not
