Her voice was as good on stage as it was on record. This was a difficult period, when she was going thru her breakdown & she lived it vicariously thru her vocal performances, yes, some performances were not to everyones 'taste', but, to be there was to witness art.

it's like she is doing a jimi Hendrix -esque guitar solo with her voice... to me she embodies "the voice as an instrument" on a whole new level, the equivalent of Salvador Dali was for graphic arts she is to music, ahead of her time and perhaps most of ours.

For those complaining about her singing live, stick to the albums if the thought of the artist doing what they want with their voice on stage is too much for you.

Right?!? I've been so pleased to collect Liz's live recordings and hear her improvisations. Trane & Miles never repeated a solo, why would THIS musical genius??

Its when she experimented with the vocal at this time that I think she was at the very top of her game

I was there. The music was mind blowing alhough Liz was going through a bit of an "experimental" stage with her singing.

I've had a lot of time to think on it over many years. The way instruments and musical equipment in general evolved during their later years in performing live, she maybe had less control over what she could hear with the type of acoustics they were using and the amplifications being even louder than previous years, she had to facilitate earpieces to maintain control of her voice in conjunction to what was being broadcasted around her. I don't know obviously.

@2:42 Robin showmanship saved the band... truly Liz was lost in words. Now I see why she avoids coming back to the stage...the memories are too strong. She's been thorough so much.

Yeah, it seemed everyone started to notice, and there was kind of a weird vibe.

As much as I love Liz, people came to hear Cocteau twins songs, just sing them darling. 😏

This is not an experiment but rather an expression of helplessnes.

In 1994 she was going through so much and she HAD to keep on singing. I must admit I do not like so much this period of her, specially cause I can feel her sorrow. Later, she would sing a little more acording to the songs.

what happened with liz here... :-(
@PlazaMoon10 жыл бұрын
basically; Liz did not bother to learn whatever she sang in the original versions of these songs. just because she was in that phase of pure abstract lyricism, does not make up for the fact that her original input was fundamental to the completed song. as with so many of these songs; Rpb and Simon had to remember the structure, Liz thought she could get away with fan acceptance of what they love/loved her for.

Perhaps it is a mistake. Because it seems that she is singing another letter; because only the instrumental is in the bar. But she is still lights years ahead os us. It is much superior. Someone to overcome it. I can´t say. And people, The place to be rotten. I say this in the acoustics. She is not in a studio. Who here sings better than she to criticize ?? Nobody, right !!! So........

She was really much less good on stage than on records. She made far too many vocal whims. I'm Sorry, but sometimes she was even ridiculous on stage, like here ! I admired a lot her, but NEVER on stage...
@krasteff9 жыл бұрын
+Francis Broka I think she was different on stage because the studio work with her voice was such that it simply doesn't allow that to be performed live.
