When you are changing lures often, a product from Mustad called Fastach Clip is the way to go. A size 3 will give a 75lb breaking strain. They are not swivels, everyone around here uses them on the cod. Keep up the good work. 👍🤠

Awesome video mate! Some tips for cod fishing is to let your spinnerbaits sink a bit more because a lot of the time cod tend to take lures on the drop. Another tip is to use surface lures mainly dawn or dusk when the cod will feel safer breaking the surface. 🤙🏼🍻🌅

Scotty, this area hasn't fish as well as it use to since the drought a couple of years back. Cod are generally a ambush fish that like structure and in this gorge system its the rocky undercuts.

Gday Scotty. Love the video. Don’t worry about your rod - just take it to a tackle shop and get them to put a tip ferrul on your rod. It will work fine. A good tackle shop will teach you how to do it yourself. I’ve shortened a few rods bush bashing. They still work fine. Hope this helps

When indulging in food such as that, when out in the sticks, I nearly always turn to an expression my old Scottish uncle used to use back in the 1960's . . . "Wouldn't call the king my uncle." When we live like this, we are as rich as the richest.

Nothing like sitting back with my favourite bevvy and watching the latest SGWA video - and this video was fantastic. The wife and I have been followers for a long time. Congrats on catching your first Cod. It took me a long time before I caught my first, but there have been many since. I think the fisheries guys are to be commended for the return in numbers of these iconic native species after the population crashes of the '80s. Next one to cross off is the elusive Trout Cod 😉 A bit harder to track down but also coming back in numbers. Keep up the great work. We need our regular SGWA fix!

Hey Scotty, love your videos mate 👌 In regards to Murray cod; Structure: 2 big key items - anything that creates an obstruction from the current, and anything that is overhanging (they like having something above their head). A low overhanging tree at dawn and dusk is exceptional (bait fish will gather to eat bird shit) Lure selection: I tend to use cranks/soft plastics during the high of the day, if I can’t get a bite or I’m fishing somewhere snagy I’ll then switch to chatters/spinner baits. From first light until direct sunlight on water I’ll use top water gear. Lure colour: try to match the colour of the water. Purples/blacks work for murky muddy water and your fluros orange/yellow/green colour for clearer (blue works exceptionally well in clear water on overcast days). How long to keep a lure on for: if it’s golden hour and your not getting hits and fishing in good territory I wouldn’t go anything over 15 minutes (trying different retrieval paces/patterns every 5th cast). Middle of the day maybe 30-40 minutes. Middle of the day try to hit the same structure at least 10 times as they usually hit during this time due to aggression over feeding. Don’t be afraid to let chatters/spinners sink for a good couple of seconds every few jerks when fishing in deep holes as well, a lot of people retrieve to quick and their lure doesn’t get deeper than 2 metres when the holes 10m deep. Best thing is keep a fishing journal. Document structure, time, weather, lure, retrieval type, water colour, fish length/type, etc etc. After a few fish you will start to seeing trends. Hope that helps 👍

Sounds in the night. Yeah, sometimes they can be disconcerting. I woke one night in Alaska to something that sounded like a cow pissing on a rock behind my tent. Turned out to be a sow brown bear! It was pitch black but somehow the 357 turned up in my hand. Fortunately, she went on about her business and wandered on downstream. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep that night!

Hi Scotty. Nice video and as many others have commented your videos just keep getting better. Tip for preventing breakage of those delicate thin brittle rods - when you are moving through underbrush turn your rod around and hold the rod by the rear grip so the tip is trailing behind you. Only thing that may catch is the odd runner but you wont be breaking any more rod tips.

Hi Scottie, just adding a little advice, fished a lot around the Severn River in Northern NSW whilst living in Australia, similar country to where you fished, and through trial and error over the years found some of the more oxygenated river sections below waterfalls and rapids will hold Murray and Trout Cod, water may look fast on the surface, but deep fishing lures like spinnerbaits and big rubber baits with heavy heads will get down to the slower water beneath, and on the noses of those olive green ambush predators below, recommend switching from spinner reel to baitcaster style too, I have a nice Diawa Millionaire with a left hand wind handle (rare but easier than keep swapping hands when casting) hardly used it, it's like new, I'll gift it to you if you want it, just email me a postage address and I'll get it downunder to you, not much use for it back in Blighty, P.S would love to see a Tasmanian trip to the 19 lagoons central highlands, and a Kimberley Gorge trip for Barra and Mangrove Jack would be cool too. One of my fav fishing trips I had in my time downunder.

I love the fishing videos mate. Murray cod can be a difficult fish to catch, but if you keep making casts you will end up catching them, as you proved in this vid. they are always worth the effort because they are one of the most beautiful fish on the planet. They like hanging behind big logs and boulders that are stopping the main flow of the river and ambushing food as it comes past. Keep up the good content mate, lovin it.

Don't give up on the cod fishing Scotty. Those were some tough conditions to catch a cod in and you still jagged one. Catching cod on surface is my all time favourite and definitely worth the hours and kilometres through the granite belt to get em. Always enjoy your videos mate, you’re a raw & honest young fella. Looks like you’re in the New England area somewhere, don’t worry the cod are about, fish at sunrise & sunset. Don’t be afraid to fish moving water, and pepper one area with many casts as they’re territorial & lazy so they will bite if you annoy them enough. Also dirty water = dark lure, like black. Look up Paul Kneller Lures, he is an innovator in hand crafted aussie lures & you will not beat his lures for cod.
