I really need to try this. I've been in places with some huge sign of cod on the fish finder. KMS of fish showing on the bottom. Good idea

Awesome! Thank you!

Surely this has to be more fun with rod and line rather than hand lines? Amazing how many hit the lure before you hooked one.
@BobKelland2 жыл бұрын
Jigging is the traditional way around here but some use rod and line these days. The video is a bit misleading in terms of catch frequency because with the camera mounted on the jigger the extra weight made it tricky to get the normal feel of a hit. Also I wanted, at times, to keep the camera steady to get more video info.

Hi Bob,And I thought the Cod where gone everywhere? Geez, you had a ton of them! Nice action video, I loved it when they tried to eat your Go Pro!Too bad, you can't beam the video aboard your boat so you can see what is out there.... But I Am sure that there are laws against doing that!Nice video, & I am glad you shared it!Kurt

+iflyhelis Thanks! Not sure about laws, maybe not made yet re live views. Personally I like the mystery of fishing so might not like live views that much.

All I can say is, they bite quick at the bait!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I love jigging for cod, we do this off the coast of New England in the spring. Do you prefer hand lines to a rod?
@BobKelland4 жыл бұрын
Thanks - Yes I like the hand line but more and more people around here are using the rod these days.

wow lots of cod, does that mean the cod is back in Newfoundland?
@BobKelland2 жыл бұрын
Seems good in some areas this year but not in others so hard to say if it is back in a sustainable way or not. No expert so have to see what they say.

0:02 You're pretty modern, looks like, with the outboard motor and all. I was expecting you Newfoundlanders to have those ancient cast-iron single-cylinder inboard jobs... :-)

Hey bob Are the locations you choose to fish shoals you’re aware of??? I hear fishing shoals is important in cod fishing, thoughts?
@BobKelland4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, I depend solely on my guide and brother in law (a former commercial fisherman) to find the spots. I concentrate on catching with camera and hook.

Fun video! What's your favorite way to cook up cod?
@BobKelland9 жыл бұрын
Erich's Alaska Channel Mostly I dredge in flour with just salt and pepper and then fry in vegetable oil. Lately I've been experimenting with some deep fried ideas (based on what others have done). Getting close to where I want to be and will be checking latest recipe out on some relatives tomorrow :)

Make some beer batter and then soak the fish in it for a minute and then roll em in salt and vinegar chip crumbs and then deep fry until they are golden brown
@marhar29 жыл бұрын
Nice catch! How deep is that water? Do the cod typically stay near the bottom?
@BobKelland9 жыл бұрын
Mark Harrison The GoPro camera is limited to a depth of about 190 feet so my line is somewhat less than that. I'd say the average depth in the video is about 150 feet. Yes cod are often called ground fish and the procedure to catch them is to drop your jigger until it hits bottom and then pull it up a few feet and start the jigging action. Thanks!
