A mic activator shootout seems like a great vid idea. There’s this one called the Klark Teknik CT1 that goes for just $30. Would be cool if you can throw that into the mix.

You can use boosters with other microphones to stay in the sweet spot of the gain curve on your preamp or anytime max gain is still not enough. Just be careful not to overdrive the input of the preamp. That's often hard to detect since most preamps don't have a meter for that. I use the Klark Teknik MIC BOOSTER CT 1 with a Shure Beta 57a and it really helps. Almost seems like condensor sensitivity and that allows me to stay back a bit from the mic and get a different tone with a more open sound. The Klark Teknik MIC BOOSTER CT 1 is also very inexpensive, you should review it with the SM7B.

I like the activator which plugs directly to the mic. The signal from the mic travel very short before being amplified by the mic activator. So, theorically les noise. Thank you. P/S: I like to have the mic activator too. :)

The Alctron MA-1 is still available on AliExpress. I’ve asked Coda about the similarities on Amazon twice, but they’ve ignored me. The Coda’s spec sheet does show it as being quieter than the Alctron, so the internals must be different. The Coda’s rapidly been going up in price, probably because of a lack of competition in their price range: $49 ➡️ $59 ➡️ $69 ➡️ $79.

Great video but I was a bit disappointed when this wasn't a shootout and your breakdown mostly stopped with the MB-1. Going to check out your other vids now, but if you haven't made a booster breakdown yet I think a lot of us would love to see it -- should definitely include the ultra affordable Klark Teknik CT1 as well (although it's out of stock everywhere I've looked!).

This is so cool! I recently got myself a broken SM58 which I fixed by soldering a broken cable inside of the mic. Needless to say I was surprised to see a 'broken' SM58. Anyway, I'd love to have some more gain with my interface!

Shure would be nice to win one of these just at the time I have to buy one. BTW, BIG QUESTION: Do you hear the "passing truck" from the Cloudlifter as well?? I seriously recommend addressing this question!
@HaileSt0rm3 жыл бұрын
Please throw the Klark Teknik CM-1 in the mix. It's supposedly matches the Cloudlifter in performance.

They might not precisely fit this mold but I'd be interested in tube preamps, like the ART Tube MP or Tube MP/C with some extra features.

You should make a video explaining how to get into what you need for XLR mics. I have an at2020 usb+ and I want to upgrade, but I don't know where to start. Having like three or four tiers (entry-level setup, mid-tier, high-end, and Professional) and then explaining what makes each good for their use case. Not going to lie, that would be pretty darn cool.

It seems like they revised the board significantly on the Alctron MA-1 based on one aliexpress review. I wonder if that's the same board Coda is using.

Can you use directly from the mb1 into a Ev powered speaker input?
@AudioHotline Жыл бұрын
I think it just depends on the model. I think some EV powered speakers have +48v of phantom power, but others don’t. You’ll just have to make sure the one you have can supply +48v of phantom power and you’re good.

Do you and Bark need a room? I heard that car sound during the noise test. Wouldn’t buy it for that reason. I’m surprised you never mention that you can turn the gain to zero and turn the infinity fader up and kill all of that background noise.

Not the quietest but seems to be the quietest for the money. I have my doubts as to the practicality of these devices. Modern consumer interfaces are quiet enough and cheap enough that if your problem is preamp noise you might as well spend a few bucks more and upgrade the interface with all the benefits that entails instead of buying this thing that only does this one thing.

For Europeans there is no reason to go for anything but the triton audio fethead, cause it’s cheap (65€), small, requires only one cable and performs just as well as the other mic activators. I hear that they are more expensive in America though.
