This was an animation that was done in about 2 1/2 weeks. My friend Tom Weiser and I wanted to put together a short for a free ASIFA event. We are both fans of Jonathan Coulton so we figured a music video would be fun. I know Code Monkey already has a lot of videos made of it, but having worked as a web design/developer for the government...well how could I not?! I hope everyone enjoys it.

Man I started to learn to code back in like late 2020 and coming back to this song thanks to the show "Code Monkey" I realize that uuuhhh yeah its accurate. As a kid, I only understood the romantical aspect but as a programmer I laughed at the "Maybe manager want to write goddamn log-in page himself." Amazing song.

Same as it ever was. 33 years doing this. My first programming gig paid $8/hour. TBF I'm doing much better now, and you could actually live independently on $8/hour back then. Not in luxury or anything, but a decent apartment was easily in reach. But yeah, at many places there's a lot of second guessing of what you do by people who couldn't even start your editor/IDE but seem to have opinions on your work. "Why can't it work as well as $FOO does it?" "Um, because $FOO has a team of 45 developers working on it, and all I have is me and a part time intern?"

Just the opposite. Was a programmer I liked it at first, but it's increasingly rubbed me the wrong way, and it feels toxic to see this attitude normalized, that a woman who's made it quite clear that she's not interested still *should* be with some guy because he judges himself to be deserving or has "warm fuzzy secret heart" or whatnot. In TV shows, movies, etc, this is treated as a heartwarming scenario where the woman eventually "learns to love" the eminently deserving man. In the real world, what happens is known as stalking. This storyline shouldn't be celebrated. It makes me want to write a song from the woman's perspective. ---------- Desk lemur try avoid code monkey Pretend to make fake phone call Code monkey still not taking hint Want to hit head against wall Desk lemur ask for private meeting With boring manager Rob She tell Rob she very uncomfortable Getting hard to do job Desk lemur think maybe monkey oughta recognize her bodily autonomy Desk lemur is person. Not prize. So hard to convey this. She tries! Desk lemur think for herself! Desk lemur has her own personal views! Desk lemur not interested. Warm secret heart not entitlement Code money, take clue! ----------

@@karenrobertsdottir4101 For crying out loud, do you SJWs have to ruin everything? As if entertainment was the source of all the world's problems. This isn't a serious song, it's meant to be funny while making a commentary on boring office life. Never once does it condone "stalking" or whatever baloney. In case you don't notice, the "code monkey" never gets the woman, he's still sad, bored, and lonely when the song ends, still wanting something that he can't have. Stop making things to be offended about when there are none existing.

@@LordofDiamondsMetal ". In case you don't notice, the "code monkey" never gets the woman, he's still sad, bored" - He still feels entitled to her because "he's a good guy" and keeps going after her despite her dismissing him. And people who listen to the song are encouraged to identify with him and cheer on this behavior. That's not a good thing. "For crying out loud, do you SJWs have to ruin everything?" Yeah, sorry for making a big deal out of stalker-promoting media. I guess we just got tired of all the rape.
@LordofDiamondsMetal
@LordofDiamondsMetal 3 жыл бұрын
@@karenrobertsdottir4101 Not everybody who listens to music takes it seriously or feels "inspired" by the message it conveys, if there is any message. I would never in a million years listen to this song and feel inspired to stalk and rape someone from it. I listen to death metal, with lyrics about rape and murder all the time, but do I ever do any of those things? No, and neither do the vast, VAST majority of people who listen to such music. Why? Because we recognize that those things are wrong, and also because we recognize that the artists who write about it aren't serious. Death metal lyricism is incredibly blunt and if there is rape in it, it's obvious. In this song, I have never seen rape or stalking and even if you held a gun to my head and demanded that I search for it, I still wouldn't find it. The code monkey is an immature man. I was the same way that you described once: I felt "entitled" to a girl and got fiercely jealous of anyone else who tried to get with her with some degree of success. I was 15 then. I was an immature kid. I'm older now and look back on that part of my life with much regret. But it's still a natural part of human nature to fantasize. Men do it. Women do it. I imagine any sentient being capable of feeling sexual attraction does it. But it's only the sick fucks that act on it and actually rape or stalk people. So if you think that this song - OF ALL SONGS - is the cause of some people becoming stalkers and rapists, then you need to back off, rethink things, and realize that some people just want to enjoy good music.

I'm a little behind the curve - I didn't discover this song until just a few weeks ago. I wanted to share it with my best friend, and I thought, "I wonder if there's a video?" Is there ever!! 😃 What an awesome job you've done! Thank you for making and sharing this!

"Courage is not the absence of fear, it's having that fear and moving forward anyway." The only thing stopping you from having the courage is the excuse that you don't have it. Stop making that excuse and you'll find that you have all the courage you need.

I am not a computer I am not even in the real world yet I am still in college getting a psych degree This song still relates tome a lot . I find every aspect very true. I drink coffee to keep up with school work .Sometines homework or exams get so piled up I have to stay up really late and even not sleep to study for it . I end up giving up my hobby and even some of my friendship because I have to study for exams. and I just slowly find out I barely do anything else other than in the library or finding a career path ...and crying No times for personal relationships other than chatting through facebook . I think most of my friends are the same since we both have really high load of course work And know that life is going to b e like that after having a job . WE are all code monkeys

Its basically the same for a lot of countries though . For a lot of Asian country that values work it could be harder .basically in order to get money most of time you have to work hard for the boss to like you so you can stay there .and unless you worked more than enough money the choices you have are quiet little in a company (unless you have another better company to back you up ).Which is kind of sad because we need money to live, and while working for money we are not necessarily "living " ,more like trying to survive

linvy kriselle That's why i like my vagabond idea. Gas stations have WiFi and power outlets, every town has temp work, and if you go somewhere foreign you can get free money and food by telling stories of your homeland and those you've been through as per bardic tradition! Though i'm probably just going to learn languages and be a translator, hopefully, so that constant mobility is inherent to the job.

+linvy kriselle In my opinion, it get's MUCH better when you get a job compared to college. Either do college more slowly and relax a bit or go fast and just keep telling yourself it will be worth it when you get a sweet job.

Well, I suppose not. Everyone has their own aspirations, and you're just as entitled to your own as I am to mine. I must say it's quite odd if your life goal is to be making "peanuts" in terms of money at your job, though.
