Reba Meyers of Code Orange delivers her composition over a drum track by Megadeth's Dirk Verbeuren for the second installment of the 2017 Drumception series! Guitars recorded by Matt Very.
The drum track was created by Dirk himself using Toontrack’s Superior Drummer 3 and a selection of grooves and fills from the MIDI packs he released with the company. I love CO & Reba was awesome in this, but I think I finally get what Glenn Fricker means about programmed drums vs real drums. It can work for demo ideas, and in some styles like Industrial Metal, like where Godflesh literally had a drum machine for just about their entire career, live and in the studio. In prog metal in can work too, like in Animals As Leader's debut. In this though, I think it needed more mixing IMO. Good job nevertheless.

I've never liked programs such as Toontrack. The entire drum track exists as one stereo instrument track where as a real drum performance can take up to 10 mono tracks plus a stereo bus. Good and thick programed drums are achievable (Nolly and Misha from periphery have tutorials on how to program them) but it requires each drum to be meticulously programed (velocity and varying samples) and mixed on separate tracks. Only by EQing, Compressing and processing each individual drum can a natural performance be achieved. For just making a quick demo to send to bandmates I see why Toontrack is useful though.

Sounds very tedious but that's interesting and it seems it can make you a better mixer and producer by default. In the end, whatever works for people to get a song or riff idea done and not let software features get in the way of one's creativity should be the number one thing.

it's easy to mix ezdrummer/superior drummer. they sound good but limited with their kits. always use original preset because it is almost sounds like raw mic'd drum sound.
