@jayg3397 ай бұрын
16gb - the answer is 16gb. 8gb might be fine today, but it's going to get real tight and limiting in 2 years. 16Gb should be the absolute minimum for laptop you intend to have for at least 3 years(and hopefully much longer).
@grizfan937 ай бұрын
I love how many people are able to see into the future, and predict your memory needs 2 or 3 years from now. If your budget only allows for 8GB, then go for it. If most of your work is browser based and MS Office, you will be fine for years to come. These are very mature apps, and I doubt very much that you'll **need** more memory in a couple of years. Now, maybe your computer use changes a lot in the coming years. Maybe your light Excel use turns into heavy data modeling and analytics. If that happens, then by all means buy a new computer, you've earned it, and your higher-paying new career means you can easily afford a new computer. If you do have some room in the budget, I think the first upgrade should be memory, and if your budget allows, then by all means, go for 16GB, as this will likely be the first bottleneck you encounter in the future. But if that means going over budget, don't. Save you money, be financially responsible and sleep well knowing that for most people, 8GB will be plenty for the foreseeable future. I spent 30 years working for a company that actually makes computer memory. The growth curve for amount of memory a typical user needs has flattened out quite a bit. Getting 8GB now won't mean you have to replace it in 2 or 3 years unless your computing needs change dramatically.

Something we could only dream about just a few short years ago. I'm pretty sure now, I'm going for an M3 Air soon, with extra ram and disk space. Cheers.

I completely agree. There's too much biases when it comes to base models, it's like taboo to even consider recommending them. But just like some of these comments, always using the video editing angle is just not realistic. A majority of people will spend their days in a browser alone.

Thank you and finally! Someone who is not obsessively focusing on the fact that it has 8GB of RAMS as a base model. I really wanted to purchase this for my work. I mostly do Word documents, PDF reading and occasional web browsing and a lot of people suggested to go for the 16GB or not buy at all. I was so confused. I literally just wanted a laptop that can do basic work. Not even editing a picture or video. Yes I know with 16GB I can future proof this laptop but I dont have the money to spare to purchase with that bump price. It was really hard watching other reviews and reading the comments on how people just straight up shit on the base model. I'm buying the laptop this week. Hopefully I can get the Midnight color!

Thank you for this. Very few users need to edit multiple streams of 8K videos all day long. The entry level MacBook air should be good for 75% of folks if not 90%. I would just suggest to bump up the RAM to 16GB or preferably 24GB.

Great video!My only concern is whether the base model of 8G Memory can hold for the daily multitasking uses, say 20-30 tabs, 8-10 pdfs, emails, 5-6 words and slides, and several other light apps like music. Really hate to wait for 10 secs when switching
@simokuroko42666 ай бұрын
no, i have a base model and it can hold 15 tabs with word and excel open. i dont imagine it handling 30 tabs smoothly, it will work, but it wont be snappy and you would notice it when switching between tabs.

I got a MacBook Air M2 512gb, 8gb RAM and I have to say this is a nightmare. I was too naive when I decided to rely on processor only (also a lot of reviews are not actually reveal this point) I don't recommend to go with this option, besides that I find as very arrogant move to offer such a limiting machine in the market on 2024

I have an M1 Max Mac Studio that I use as my work computer as well as using Final Cut Pro as a hobby. Want to get a laptop for mobile work as well as using Final Cut and can’t decide between the M3 air or the M3 pro. I believe both have the same ProRes video decoders (I know the M1 max has double). How important is the RAM for Final Cut projects? I was considering 24 gigs if I get the air or 36 gigs if I get the pro. My main concern is running into issues using Final Cut on the air which is why I was thinking 24 gigs. Please advise and thank you! BTW, I’ve been a subscriber for a while now and really enjoy your content and respect your opinion.

I always used to go directly to Pro models when in need of a new laptop cause back in intel days Air sucked & only Pros had bigger display. But now with Apple silicone & 15” option, the difference between Pro & Air are minimal for most people.

Hi Greg! Thanks for creating this video. I’ve been searching the web regarding this matter but this video got my attention so far. I would like to ask a specific question. I am a law student. I currently have a 16gb 512ssd windows laptop. I use zoom twice or thrice a week and I open 5-10 pdfs using the web browser and other apps like Microsoft word and excel. Sometimes my laptop crashes when I do all these together. Now, would you recommend that I buy a Macbook Air M3 with 8gb of unified memory or should I go for 16gbs? Money is not a concern but I also don’t want to buy something that is considered to be an “overkill”. I hope that you could answer my question. Thanks!

Dear, if you haven't bought it yet.. 8Gb is certainly enough. Mac OS use of swapping is very efficient. Now, I personally would still go for 16gb, for better comfort and longevity. You can read here or there that SSDs are not made for that much swapping activity. Also, God know how much Ram the next OS(s) will consume.. especially with Apple AI coming soon. you certainly don't need the bigger chip M3 Max, the base one is plenty enough but 16gb is a sweet upgrade, if you can afford it. Cheers.

Thanks for your honest review. I've been watching a bunch over the last week or so and they're basically all like you say - referencing video editing etc which just doesn't apply to me. Currently watching your video on the following: Mid 2013 , 11 inch MacBook Air ,128GB flash storage, 1.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 , Memory - 4GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3 onboard. I had the battery replaced almost a year ago and cleaned up memory so I could run the latest OS it's capable of (Big Sur). I only use it for some light word processing and surfing the web with multiple tabs open so guessing the M2 will get me by when I replace in the New Year?😉

I've had one with 16 GB RAM for 6 months, and it's just great. I can afford the MacBook Pro, but I wanted the slimness so I could dump it in my bag and go for a hike in the Himalayas. I'm not so worried about the ports. It supports external screens and printers, and you can put a dock on it if you want to add a scanner. Save yourself 1000 euros and keep some cash for the software!

For me its about user experience and a few infos like battery life, ram, display, keyboard and speakers. I am still getting used to the long battery life an my air. @GregsGadgets Thank you for your honest review! I think you are very right in how you compared the laptop to its day to day base usage! My first laptop was the first unibody laptop when I started my studies in 2010. It lasted for 10 years and I really did everything with it. I did photo editing video editing and gaming and of course taking notes and presentations for my studies. NOW I had to decide what laptop I will choose for the upcoming 10 years and I decided for the M3 Air because it is exactly how you described it. I now have a gaming PC for playing my video games if I have the time for it but still have a emulator on my mac M3 Air for old nintendo gaming on my big TV, you can even connect easily 4 Xbox controllers to the Macbook and play mario party... so I have no regrets. Working, being creative and playing games all in one laptop with enough battery life for a whole day of working. There is nothing what I miss. Good to see realistic reviews without the artificial constructed complains :) Well done review!

Been saying this too. For almost everyone the Air is more capable then their everyday needs. It’s even strong enough for most audio producers. Most KZbinrs that are into video editing would be fine also. They seem to forget that they are shooting 8k or 4 k videos in hdr, editing and uploading in 4k to be viewed by the public that watch on default quality settings witch usually defaults to 720 or 1080p.

After reading and watching countless articles, videos etc, I bought an m2 macbook pro not sure if it'd even be good enough for photo editing. 16gb wouldn't be enough. 512ssd not fast enough they chanted.
