To be fair, neither Ulrich or Yumi started dating at all prior to this episode. Neither of them made an official commitment to the other, thus I find that Yumi's over-reacting when she sees Ulrich talking to Emily. Thus, as Ulrich's friend, she should respect his decision to talk to other people, regardless if they're a guy or girl. Then to add insult to injury, she then decided to take advice from SISSI of all people, the LEAST credible person on campus. I could tell a mile away that Sissi was using Yumi's emotional insecurity to her advantage, and she fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I love the pairing between Ulrich and Yumi, but most of their problems stem from Yumi's insecurities and indecisiveness.

Given how Yumi's parents temporarily separated from each other over an argument that seems to be very stupid and didn't try to talk it out with each other, it's kinda sad that Yumi does the same thing with herself and Ulrich. And given from what we see of Ulrich's father, he doesn't look like the type you could talk things out with, and unfortunately Ulrich seems to have gotten this unwillingness from him. Though granted, Ulrich may not be one to try and talk things out with others because he thinks that it's a waste of time from dealing with his dad. This may have passed over my head when I was younger but it seems the trouble with Yumi and Ulrich's 'relationship' is because they don't how to properly talk to each other, mainly because their parents never taught them to. That and the teenage hormones. Because of this I can understand why Yumi tries to make them "just good friends" later on in Season 3, though that doesn't really have her addressing the issues, just pushing them aside in a different way. Just imagine what we could've seen if Ante Films and Moonscoop didn't try to make the show more simplified.

Well, I think that both actually did want to talk it out, but they didn't know how to express their feelings, especially since they don't consider themselves to be dating each other. Ulrich found interest in Emily because he was doubting that Yumi had feelings for him. Rather than speak to Yumi about this insecurity directly, he tests Yumi: Either she gets jealous, indicating that she still feels for Ulrich, or she doesn't care, and Ulrich gets a new girlfriend. Yumi responds with jealousy, but she decides to show her anger towards Ulrich rather than speak to him, attempting to mask that she has feelings for him. He actually caught this and called her out on it, but at this point, the fight was already too heated for an easy discussion. Still, at least they did make actions to resolve the conflict, even if they were unwise choices.

Woah, I like what you said about Yumi and what she said about them being "just good friends". I initially was all "Well yeah, Yumi is fed up with the back and forth and it was getting toxic" though you had me see what she said in a different light. Downplaying the main issue (their communication skills) and just acting like they're "friends" because that's easier than addressing it. They obviously care about each other a lot, hence their "not friends but not yet lovers" stance. They just need to be honest with each other, something they were both unwilling to do for their own reasons. It amazes me how Psychology can play a role in these things.

tbh for me it makes more sense that it's y=ax+b instead of y=mx+b. Hell, the first form is closer to the general form of a linear equation (Ax+By+C=0). It's not wrong at all, it's just being expressed in a different form. Like, I just plotted y=2x+5 and 2x-y+5=0 and they're the same line.

Its actually quite common. At school for stats we leanred to express the equation of regression lines in the y= ax+b format. to calculate á you need one formula and to calculate b you need another one

Huh. Rewatching this now that I’m older, I wonder if how upset and IMMEDIATELY over the top jealous Yumi is about Ulrich and Emily wasn’t just because middle school crushes are dramatic as hell (tho that’s def a huge reason lmao), but is also a bit influenced by how unstable the relationship between Yumi’s parents is. We know they seem to have temporarily separated at one point over a silly argument, and while their relationship does get better as the seasons go on, it does seem pretty tense s1. Kids learn how to handle their own relationships by watching their parents after all, lol.

I think what really crossed the line here is the fact Xana doesn't even leaves a chance to fight back. Usually the crew is at the top of its power (with maybe one of the members MIA) ready to kick his butt, but here they're all one-shottable and weakened to the brim. The real problem here is that season 2 onwards likes to pretend this episode never happened. Having a character like William get in the way of their relationship for a bit isn't really an inherently bad idea, it's just that he could've been more interesting and vital to Ulrich and Yumi's character arcs in some way.

Guys just so you know Emily looking for Jim late at night in a robe, I don’t think it’s what we thought it was since Jim was right behind Ulrich as he turned around, so I’m guessing Emily was just trying to flirt with Ulrich, because if you remember at the beginning of the episode Emily and Hidi are talking about boys I’m pretty sure since Hidi says she prefers Odd (which is a foreshadow of Xana’s Kiss) and I’m guessing Emily most likely said she prefers Ulrich, which is why Ulrich asked himself if Emily had a thing for him

Knowing XANA Odd's theory about putting a divide into the group with Yumi and Ulrich fighting is actually clever. Then Yumi and Ulrich gave into by putting Odd in the middle.
