Companies like Nintendo, Disney, etc. are famously known for nuking any fan projects, plenty of companies allow it if they either get (at least majority) profit or if the project makes not even a penny. There are some that are much more relaxed like with the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise which has a huge following of talented individuals making games that even have some of the core characters from the original IP. Some companies go on red alert straight away, others even buy the work out and incorporate those involved to make it official, it's a spectrum. Nintendo would nuke him if he released it, they already did such with Pokemon Uranium. Considering the copyright for the original Pokemon Red & Green content doesn't come out into Public Domain until 2065, and even then it'll only be them. It's similar to the Disney and Mickey Mouse situation, where the original versions will enter public domain after a while, but until then it's a no go for anyone.

honestly, the way you handled the sprite battles seems like the best possible solution not just in saving yourself a TON of time/effort but also in style. The sprites are really iconic and I think the 3d voxel effect works really well in the more chibi representative style of the overworld, but the more realistic/representative battle sprites I just don't think would have looked good in voxels, even if you were really skilled at it. and the little paper mario flip while the camera pans around, SO cool!!

3:50 I HIGHLY recommend you look into Terrain objects. They're basically flat plains that you can paint details into (textures, elevation, holes, etc). Pretty sure you can even paint objects on them, such as trees. Probuilder is great, but I think you should use that for objects and Terrains for, well, terrain. P.S: Sorry if there are other longer comments from me with this information. On my end, it looks like my comment keeps getting deleted. I think it's because I tried to provide a link to Unity Learn? Apologies for any spam and the lack of a link.

Would terrains allow you to get tile-perfect textures and slopes, though? They’re kind of designed to blend textures and have smooth terrain for more realistic-looking games, last I looked.
@lenataylor97662 жыл бұрын
@@Tustin2121 That’s a good question. And to be honest, I’d need to look at terrains more to be sure. For textures, you could probably use a square brush to give off that feel, though I’m not sure how grid-like that can look without some sort of snapping or guideline to reference. As for elevated terrain, I think the biggest issue would indeed be the slopes. But I still think it would be better to use terrain as a base and then use probuilder objects as needed for slopes. Edit: I went into Unity to poke around with terrain. I thought using a square brush and turning down softness would allow for hard edges. Turns out I was wrong.

You can also press the buttons in combination with A, B, Start and Select for ever more color options! Kinda like how you changed the color pallet!

Another fun fact is that if you play Pokemon Yellow on Gameboy Color the game actually has color. It isn't color like a normal GBC game but every town has a different color palette that matches the name of the town (Viridian, Pewter, Cerulean, etc...). The downside is that on the original Gameboy you could turn up the contrast while in Rock Tunnel and you would be able to see (barely) even without using Flash, on a Gameboy Color it is not possible to see in Rock Tunnel unless you have Flash.

I would definitely love a part two for this project! Having the entirety of Gen 1’s original sprites remade into 3D would be absolutely amazing!
@AlfieRobles Жыл бұрын
This is amazing. Something that your shaders could benefit from is visual hierarchy. Meaning that you can dim down the colors of your tiles depending on how important they are to the navigation. The trees could be dimmed down a lot and not use black in them, but lighter gray tones so that they are not as visually overwhelming. Same for the water and the rocks on the cliff. If you start making a system of rules of how "important" each element is for the overall view or navigation, you can end up with a much better looking environment. The main character can be the one that has the most contrasting elements. And maybe the outline and doors of the houses and buildings could be on the same level. The walls and windows could be dimmed down a little bit. The grass can be at a very low level. Just opaque or contrasting enough so that it adds texture and you see that it's there if you pay attention, but that otherwise it just becomes part of the background and doesn't distract you from the actual game navigation. Basically using the principles of "value" in paintings.

5:20 is the perfect way to demonstrate 2D vs 3D, 3D vs 4D. How extra dimensions literally open up new planes of reality for one to traverse. This is such a hard thing to demonstrate, but you did it perfectly without even trying!

@Mario a good way to think of the Dimensions is as follows: 0D = Point(s) 1D = Length, a line, X 2D = Width, lines converging at point(s), Y 3D = Depth, Z 4D = Tesseract, Trength (theoretical, unperceivable to our eyes), W This is an over simplification but a solid way to visualize it.

Not gonna lie, yours and Reubs' videos of remaking old (and sometimes fairly recent) games in Unity and Unreal is really inspiring me to try these challenges. Not so much reinventing it in 3D or anything, but just trying to make a whole game without having to worry too much about the actual design aspects.

you know what would be cool, if if the floor of the "battle arena changed depending on who you fought, like there could be 4 (tecnicaly 5 if you include trainers in the next part) floors that it would transition too, one srounded by trees and has grass, one that is srounded by mountains and has a rocky floor, one that's the sea with the little dock board walk, and like a wooden floor with the arena patten on it (you know this > [-{0}-] ) for the gym leaders

Now THIS is awesome. How do you plan to do the battles? i would have it where random battles still trigger while walking in typical zones where they occur but the screen changed to a 3d model of the area your in which is a cave, water front with the docks around like cinnebar island, and even in gym trainer battles you could create a gym and tweak it depending on which gym leader your fighting. Im not sure how far this game is right now but you can redesign 3d sprites of all pokemon and include them in battle and just keep the same engine of the origonal game when it comes to how pokemon level and what stats go up by what per level. you will have to design the attacks each pokemon has lol but you can get an idea of how to do that from pokemon stadium. Kind of like Final Fantasy 7 where random battles trigger and transport you to a set battle field outide in nature or showing the slums or midgar on disc 1. Looks good! keep up the great work!
