Yeah I agree. Personally it’s on my personal Mount Rushmore of favorite Nolan films. Unfortunately like Cody said I feel that part of the reason it’s become underrated is because it’s the only film where either Nolan himself isn’t credited with contributing to the script, or he didn’t personally bring someone onboard to write it.

When Inception came out, I somehow hadn't heard about it, or even saw a trailer for it, but my friend asked if I wanted to go see it, and just told me it was about people who go into other people's dreams. So we went, and I remember being invested the whole way, and the scene when they are fighting in the hallway, and they start flying up the walls, because of how it looked being done in camera, and practically, my friend and I both looked at each other and were just like "holy shit!" Memento-This isn’t one that I rewatch a whole lot, but that doesn’t stop this movie from being an incredible achievement in cinema that makes for an amazing first and second watches 4. Interstellar-While I don’t 100% buy into the third act, upon rewatching this movie again last week, I got quite a bit more invested this movie than I ever had because of its ability to be very emotion and thought provoking at the same time 3. Inception-Objectively, this is Nolan’s masterpiece because of its amazing special effects, fantastic cast, memorable set pieces, big ideas, great journey for DiCaprio, and its ability to be incredibly intelligent while never being indulgent 2. Batman Begins-In my mind, this is the definitive origin story for my all time favorite superhero because it’s able to be very true to the Bruce Wayne/Batman character while having Nolan’s storytelling, aesthetics, and ideas 1. The Dark Knight-A phenomenal comic book film that has fantastic performances, elements from Michael Mann’s Heat, ideas of crime, escalating conflict, the difference between good and evil, and responsibility, which makes for one of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of All Time

I was also not a fan of dunkirk at all, but I loved Oppenheimer. Like you, I am also not a huge WW2 historian, and the lack of focus on any character took me out of that movie. However, I feel like Oppenheimer is the opposite and I feel like it is Dunkirk done right. The characters are rich, and the dialogue is infinitely captivating to me. I was in awe in a way that I thought only pretentious cinephiles could be lol. I loved that we stuck with Oppenheimer for the entire movie. In particular, the scene where Oppenheimer is delivering that speech in the gym structure was such a standout for me. I loved how Nolan decided to represent the devastation from the bombs by having Oppenheimer see burnt body husks and someone’s face burning off as representation of the mental devastation that he was going through in that moment. Nolan could have easily shown the bombs exploding in Japan, but this creative choice was much more powerful and captivating. It also helped instill that we are truly viewing everything through and with Oppenheimer. I wonder if Oppenheimer might move up once you are able to watch it at home with the ability to pause and put on subtitles

It's just got a magic (no pun intended) feeling about it, a mystique that not many films have. The fact its based around the 3 parts of a magic trick gives you the feeling you're watching real magic at work and even after 15 years of watching this film I still feel mesmerised by it every time. Also, arguably, the greatest cast in any film ever. Rebecca Hall is absolutely amazing as Bordens wife but her performance never really gets a mention. Then you've got 2 absolute A grade leading men, both at the height of their powers, going against each other on screen. The whole thing is perfect

Amazing work as always, I swear ranking Christopher Nolans movies is like saying do you prefer your friends or family it's so damn difficult, that's just shows you how amazing Christopher Nolan is 12. Tenet: Exactly what you said, a movie that was so frustrating when I first saw it, then I bought it and liked it more, watched it again and it frustrated me again🤣, concept is great but he goes way to high with his execution 3/5 11. Following: It is kinda bias to put this movie so low for being his first technical film that caused pennies to make, but if I'm in the mood for a Nolan movie, I'm going to this one last 3/5 10. Dunkirk: A movie that Nolan absolutely executed with what he's going for, love the cinematography, score, and it is intense, but what's makes a war movie tick... Soul, passion, and heart, and this lacks all 3 of those 3.5/5 9. The Dark Knight Rises: Competes with Tenet for his most frustrating movie, so many great things in here but he executes his ambition way higher than what it actually needs to be, and WAY to much going on 3.25/5 8. Interstellar: Easily his most emotional film, amazing effects, amazing acting, score, cinematography, and tension, but like you said, does loose me a little bit in the last 10 minutes 4/5 7. Oppenheimer: I was just glued to the screen the entire time when watching this, and it has everything you want from a Nolan movie, couple flaws do hold down just a little bit, but one I was just engaged with and really appreciate it 4.5/5 6. Memento: This one to a weird certain degree is Nolans most haunting and nostalgic movie, something about it just has that feel to it with the music, the early 2000s style to it, and Nolans early style, definitely early Nolan ambition that I just love 4.25/5 5. Insomnia: honestly, barely anything negative I have to say about this, no where near his most original movie but one that sticks with you no matter what 4.25/5 4. The Dark Knight: Another one that I absolutely agree with, love it and one of the best out there, but damn can we talk about a different comic book movie please! 4.25/5 3. Batman: Begins: My favorite Batman movie, feels like Batman and stays like that, and it just has such a great origin story in there that I just love 4.25/5 2. The Prestige: This one has the same feelings with Memento, and probably Nolans most engaging movie, adore this movie 5/5 1. Inception: Everything you said about it are exactly my thoughs 5/5

Nice! I pretty much agree with everything! Batman Begins is great!! I much prefer it to the Dark Knight just because it breathes more and doesn't get so bogged down in it's various concepts. Disagree with your ranking but I respect that you’re shedding your opinion and are fair even if a film’s not for you. You’re acknowledging that all these films are great films in their own right it’s just a matter of which ones you personally connect to most. I rank my films differently than most. I grade 2 lists: critical and my enjoyment. Enjoyment: 1. TENET - Love the concept and the spectacle even if the storyline is very complicated. Think it gets unnecessary shit on. 2. TDK - great action, story and great performances. 3. INCEPTION - love the concept and emotionality w/h story 4. TDKR - Despite contrivances I still really enjoy this film and like TENET I think it gets unnecessary hate 5. BATMAN BEGINS - Love the story here and how it changed the comic book genre. 6. MEMENTO - Love the concept and performances but like Cody it’s a film that I get a bit impatient with repeat viewings 7. INTERSTELLAR - Love the emotionality and the visuals here. I get a lot of people are hit and miss with the ending. I personally love it. Why it’s down this low for me is purely just a movie I’d pop in the Blu Ray and want to rewatch. 8. THE PRESTIGE - great acting and visuals. Love this movie just not the most rewatchable for me personally. 9. DUNKIRK - Great concept and filmmaking at play here. Totally admire and love what he’s going for. I adore this movie (as I adore all of Nolan’s movies). It’s again a matter of rewatch factor for me personally. 10. INSOMNIA - Great acting but since it’s Nolan’s only film that he did not write - I personally can feel that here. Not a bad film by any stretch. I think it’s a damn great film. And the story is great just the only one of this list I feel is the “least Nolan” if that makes sense. 11. OPPENHEIMER - I love this film. 8.9/10. And this isn’t normally a type of film I gush over but the way he told the story was compelling to me plus acting and visuals are fantastic. I don’t think it is his most rewatchable film for me which is why it’s down here but I still think it’s excellent film. 12. FOLLOWING - Admire what he did here as a fan of Nolan’s but since it’s a student film don’t really have a desire to rewatch. Critical: 1. Oppenheimer - I think this is his best directed and most complete film I’ve ever seen from him. It’s a masterful film in my opinion. 2. Dunkirk - even though the story is not the forefront here I think on a filmmaking basis, this is one of his best achievements 3. Inception - One of his best character stories mixed with the concept 4. TDK - Fantastic crime film that changed the genre 5. Prestige - The acting and the story here are immaculate 6. Insomnia - Great acting and story. His most underrated film. 7. Begins - awesome acting and performances. Only area I knock it is action scenes 8. Interstellar - most emotional story that aids amazing visuals. I only put it this low because the last 5 minutes I think was too much like a perfectly wrapped gift but overall a great film. 9. Memento - great concept and acting. Only area I “knock” it - I don’t think it’s his best helmed film as a filmmaker. It’s one of his better films as a storyteller but I think cinematography wise it’s just not on the level with the others in my opinion. 10. Tenet - love the concept and the visuals - amazes me every single time. And I am a huge sucker for spy films too. I also think this movie gets too much hate. Why it’s down here is just cos it’s a movie about the spectacle and not the characters. I am okay with that and love the film nonetheless but as far as a critical review that’s why it’s down here for me. 11. TDKR - I love this film and while I think it gets unnecessary hate similar to TENET I do agree that it’s his sloppiest screenplay. I love the emotions here and how it all wraps up from Begins but script wise it could’ve been better as far as the conveniences 12. Following - it’s a student film essentially and it shows IMO. I think it’s commendable for what he had but I don’t think it’s on the level of these other films. I am a diehard Nolan fan and love all these movies on this list but this is how I grade his work. Love him as a filmmaker

My rankings (rating it out of 10 because for me it's more diverse) and I'll also say what my favorite part of the movie is. Also I haven't seen insomnia or following yet 1. Interstellar (btw just so everyone knows this is my favorite movie ever), one of the greatest scores I've ever heard and i think Nolan's best, also very emotional and some of the best visuals I've seen AND an amazing story. It might be slightly biased because i love space but this is all just my opinion (10/10) 2. The Dark Knight, greatest villain ever in a comic book movie in my opinion but also almost every major character brings there A game here (10/10) 3. Inception, i think the best overall story out of all these movies, also the second best visuals of any of his movies behind interstellar (9.5/10) 4. Oppenheimer, im a movie nerd so the technical aspects of this movie is some of the best I've ever seen, the acting from our main characters is some of the best if not the best of these movie (9/10) 5. The prestige, the dynamic between the 2 main characters is so good, and also i think the best twist out of any of these movies (9/10) 6. Tenet, ik this probably isn't a popular opinion but i think it being still a little confusing to me is a good thing because i always want to go back and watch more, the look of this movie I've always loved too and even though confusing still at times i love the time travel aspect (8.5/10) 7. Batman begins, the best origin story ever next to spider man, Gotham looked it's best and gordan was at his best here, not saying he was ever bad but he was at his best here in my opinion (8.5/10) 8. Dunkirk, i think it lacks character development but the story is so good to me that it still is a very good movie, I've always loved how different this movie feels compared to other way movies (7.5/10) 9. Memento, the story is amazing and guy pierce (sorry if i spelled it wrong) is amazing but i never really loved any of the other performances in this movie, none are bad but I don't think it's all that great either, the story is really good so it's still a pretty good rating for me (7/10) 10. The Dark Knight Rises, the last act and ending is amazing but i think the rest of the movie is ok at best, bane is amazing but I've never been a fan of the twist towards the end because it felt forced to me (6.5/10)

The thing about the audio is that Nolan mixes it for the best sound systems at the best cinemas, rather than the Majority of cinemas. So if you're at a really good cinema with a top of the line sound system, the audio should be really good. But if you're in a more low end cinema, it won't sound very good. Basically it's a compromise. Might want to look into the quality of your local cinemas. I'd definitely recommend 15/70 IMAX, if you're in range of one of the few 70mm IMAX cinemas in the world.

Maybe the Dunkirk-movie from the 50s captures this better. I don't know yet, haven't seen this movie.

@@1977Eelco Fair enough, I saw the criticisms later, for example the emphasis on the role the little boats played on the evacuation. But I still rate it, the cinephile in me and it was released at a point in time where I was rejecting the overuse of CGI.

Can anyone explain the deal with the sound mixing in some of his films? Tenet, Batman Trilogy, Inception etc... all have the dialog way back and down low in the mix to the point where i have to sit there with my remote in my hand so i can turn it up when its just dialog and then quickly turn it down when any action starts. Its extremely disappointing and i dont understand it. Also, some of his movies have constant music in the background making quiet dialog scenes feel very strange and almost like the whole movie is a trailer. I dont have this issue with most movies so dont try to tell me its my set up cause its not. Trust me ive experimented to try and figure it out. Im to the point where ive figured out the best way to watch it is with subtitles on. Thats rediculous and frustrates the heck outta me.

"Cool to look at" is the best way to describe Tenet. Outside of that I don't think there's really much else to like about the movie. Your bottom three are spot on. My favorite part of Dark Knight Rises is that the first thing Batman does when he gets back to Gotham is set up the bat symbol for Gordan to set on fire.

I’m with you, Cody. Inception is SO rewatchable…so good, so perfect. And, lOppenheimer, for me, was something I might watch once more when it comes to streaming, but only because I’m a history buff. Definitely not his best, in my opinion.

18:08-19:15 I totally understand where you’re coming from 100%. I get that The Dark Knight is a really well done movie but the overexposure of it always gets on my nerves as well as Halloween (I get its iconic but it isn’t the only slasher movie that’s great) and a personal one for me is Predator 87. I understand people really like that one but I can’t get behind that with is okay since everyone is allowed to have an opinion

I'm actually with you on the Dark Knight man. The movie is an all time, stone cold classic, but I prefer a few other films to it overall. Here is my list - I haven't seen Oppenheimer yet but I feel your explanation of the war genre is perfectly in line with mine so I assume it will be in the Tenet range for me as well. I also haven't seen Following but I am ok with that. I may watch it someday though. 1) Inception 2) Batman Begins 3) The Prestige 4) The Dark Knight 5) Interstellar 6) Memento 7) The Dark Knight Rises 8) Tenet 9) Insomnia 10) Dunkirk

I'm also not one for war movies; for some reason, I tend to find battle scenes disengaging and hard to follow. Dunkirk was especially confusing because it doesn't really stick with one character; the sprawling quality of the combat left me with no anchor. Granted, I only saw the movie six years ago, and I was fourteen then. I wonder how I'd like it on rewatch. For that matter, I haven't seen any war movie in quite some while, so maybe I'll find my tastes have changed.

Your point on the greatest CBM of all time is tough. It should be "what is your favorite" but then most folks would get too personal with it and mention Guardians or Iron Man 3, so it is a tough one. I think its just best to say S tier CBM's, not a whole lot should be there, and the stipulation would be "which movies are S tier" which again leads to "personal opinions" plus everyone on the internet wanting to put their two cents in. I cant tell you which Batman movie was better, for me its like debating if SM1 or SM2 was better than the other. They're both great, and i would put them on the S tier.

The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, and Inception are some of my favorite movies of all time. The Dark Knight and BB each do something better than the other, like Breaking Bad v Better Call Saul. My biggest problem with TDK is that, while I see what Nolan is going for, the ending is a bit dumb. Love Insomnia and Memento, too, even though I don’t rewatch them too often, but Insomnia is Robin Williams’ best serious role (his best being Good Will Hunting!). The Prestige is a movie I watched repeatedly when I first saw it BUT over the years, I haven’t as much; still a great movie.
