Also, you hit the nail on the head. M. Night is a master of using the age old writing technique of asking "what if ______?" And then he uses that to think of ideas that are ridiculously intriguing and original (in an age where originality in Hollywood is almost dead). But he has the same problem that I think Jordan Peele has. Excellent premise, excellent set up, pretty good execution...until the end, where it feels like neither of them know how to resolve the story in a satisfying way. I'd say pretty much every M. Night premise is GREAT, but he only lands the ending maybe 1/3 of the time. I still LOVE him though.

Fun fact about Old: Old was inspired by a graphic novel called Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy. The movie diverges from the comic, like adding in reasons for the beach shenanigans and changing the ending. The children-turned-teens getting pregnant does happen in the graphic novel, but it leads to a more depressing end. I think since he changed the ending completely, he could've definitely just left that scene out. 😅 He also changed the name of the character of Mid-sized Sedan...the character's name in the comic is Amesan. That change was interesting?? 😂

UNBREAKABLE takes the top spot for me too, and the trilogy as a whole is fantastic. James McAvoy's ability to convey each of his characters to the point you as a viewer can tell exactly which one he is without a word being spoken is astounding. With THE HAPPENING, the opening scenes still hold up for me, especially the construction workers leaping to their deaths, but once you get past that, I am completely with you on it being an out-and-out comedy (of errors).

People hating on The Village twist I am convinced to this day just didn't understand the movie or they're just salty they didn't get monsters. There are so many clues all through the movie, saying it should've been a straightforward story of a girl trying to get medicine. That would've been so boring. There's no universe where Glass is better than Knock at the Cabin, The Village, and The Visit. The Happening sure, it's enjoyable as a high budget schlock film but there's just nothing to excuse the awfulness of Glass.

Signs is a timeless classic with some of the best dialogue ever delivered in film. I'm actually surprised Shyamalan has not revisited this universe. Perhaps post Glass and a few clunkers he will begin considering it. Not that he should, but it could be epic if the original cast can return.

Haven't seen Trap yet, so can't say anything about that one. Can't say that I agree with your list completely, but hey...it's your list :) I do include "Devil" in my list. Though M. Night Shyamalan hasn't directed it, you can clearly feel that it's a story by him. I've seen 14 movies so far where he was involved with. Anyways, my list would be: 1) The Sixt Sense Great soundtrack, great story, great performances (loved Donnie Wahlberg and Toni Collette), great cinematography, etc. Saw it when it came out in 1999 and talked about it for weeks afterwards. 2) Unbreakable Only thing I have with this movie is that at times it feels a bit too slow paced. 3) The Village Yeah, I liked this movie a lot! Maybe not one of the greatest twists, but I just love the whole (autumnish feeling, maybe even Halloween-ish) atmosphere of the movie and the soundtrack I think is beautiful. Also the great performances by: Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt, Brendan Gleeson, Sigourney Weaver, Judy Greer, etc. The cinematography is also excellent. 4) Signs Wow, awesome 50s SF opening music :) Great cinematopgraphy, good performances (maybe sometimes a bit too odd) and a very intriguing story (maybe sometimes a bit too slow paced). But, I can't really get around the water bit. But that's just me! I found that to be quite a stupid plot point. A highly intelligent alien species that can be killed by water, but chooses our planet to conquer. It's a bit the same as with "The War of the Worlds" (I understand that's the idea), for there it's the common cold / the flu that kills them. But, they studied our species and planet for God knows how long, but in the end a human virus kills them. Anyhow, as a whole I loved this movie! 5) Split 6) Glass 7) Devil 8) Knock at the Cabin 9) Lady in the Water 10) The Happening Yeah...this movie may be in the end an unintentionally comedy...but if you didn't expected this like me back then... Boy, I was so disappointed! The trailer was just awesome! But than you get this?! 11) The Visit 12) Old So disappointing! Awesome premise for a movie! But executed so poorly. 13) After Earth 14) The Last Airbender

People always forget his Devil movie, which is weird cause it has my favorite silly moment of his and I also really enjoy watching that one.

M. Night Shyamalan should put the basic idea on the table and let good writers work on it. The guy is great and we all love him but when he write bad he just kills logic and a good story.

My favourite movie of his is still Unbreakable. Gotta see Trap

Great ranking Cody! M night is one of my least favorite directors, but I loved trap and knock at the cabin.

I strongly agree with you on The Happening... Hate that you love it or love that you hate it it's entertainment. And that's really all that movies should be. Even if unintentional.

When I saw Donnie Wahlberg in The Sixth Sense I didn’t recognize him at first but then the NKOTB fan in me went OH MY GOD!. He wanted that role so bad he lost like 30lbs for that small role which I believe personally turned him from a pop start into actor. He made such an impact that Hollywood invited him in. So good
