Finally got around to seeing Warrior, and all I can say is thank you for recommending it so highly. I mean that quite sincerely. The movie’s first half in particular hit very hard, as the makers’ more restrained way of dealing with what could have been stock situations & themes gave it a much stronger impact. This will stay with me for a while.

Great list! Like you there were a lot of tough omissions. We have some over lap. I was so close to putting some of the Apes, Zahler, and MCU movies on my list but ultimately I did not find myself re-watching them as much as other. Below would be my 25 favorite/most re-watched movies of the decade: 25) Starbuck - heartwarming French comedy watching the lead character meeting and trying to make a difference in his kids’ lives 24) Chef - very enjoyable father/son story and finding your passion again (in this case cooking). Also made me fall in love with the Cuban sandwich haha 23) Gone Girl - never read the book so this movie had me guessing the whole time 22) Turbo Kid - impressive low budget action/comedy. Love the score too 21) Creed - every time I watch this movie I tear up during Adonis’ post fight interview at the end of the movie 20) Overlord - awesome action/horror/sci-fi. 19) Win Win - very heartfelt and funny , wish Paul Giamatti had gotten a nomination for it 18) Summer of '84 - great follow up from the director’s of “Turbo Kid” - Wayne Mackey’s monologue at the end of the movie was chilling 17) Don't Breathe - was on the edge of my seat from the moment they entered the house. 16) Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil - hysterical story of misunderstanding that cleverly satirizes many backwoods horror tropes 15) Safety Not Guaranteed - great characters and had me wondering the whole time if Mark Duplass’ character was crazy 14) John Wick: Chapter 2 - my favorite of the three JW movies. The stunt work blew my mind 13) Cold in July - a thriller that you think is heading one direction that shifts in a completely different direction. Great performances from all. 12) Interstellar - The grand scope and ambition of the plot blew me away. Seeing this in IMAX was also something special 11) Inception - interesting and original story. Very easily could have been muddy and confusing but Nolan manages to thread together the different “time-lines” so it all makes sense 10) Raid 2 - tops everything in the first movie. Jaw-dropping fight choreography, an impressive car chase/fight sequence, and a crazy police/mob story 9) Looper - love time travel flicks. Clever premise and dialogue. Also has one of my favorite child performances I have seen in a movie. 8) Hell or High Water - very atmospheric modern western. Enjoyed the dual buddy stories (buddy-cop and buddy-robber). I also listen to the soundtrack frequently. 7) Insidious - utterly eerie thanks to the dreary atmosphere, creepy score, and well executed jump scares 6) Trollhunter - I am a sucker for found footage and monsters. Most found footage movies shy away from showing you the ghost/monster with shakey camera work but this movie hides nothing. You see plenty of the action and trolls. Also the story and mythos of the trolls are very clever and often intentionally hysterical. 5) Godzilla - full confession, I am a mark for Godzilla so I might be biased on this. I dug the human storyline. I love the redesign for Godzilla. The visual effect captured the size and weight of these creatures well. The absence of screen-time for Godzilla is standard for a lot of the Japanese movies which is why it did not bother me. The Mutos were cool original monsters that had plenty of screen time on their own. 4) Warrior - phenomenal performances all around and genuinely did not know who I was hoping to win in the end. Nick Nolte does not get talked about enough for his performance. Yes, Nolte got an Oscar nom over Hardy or Edgerton but online I feel like most people only talk about Hardy and Edgerton 3) Dredd - My favorite comic book-based movie of the decade. It is shot beautifully to flush out a dirty/grimy world of Mega City 1. The use of 3D perfectly complimented the slo-mo drug. Awesome action sequences and Dredd/Anderson make this a unique buddy-cop movie 2) Mad Max: Fury Road - draw dropping action and world building. The fact that it is 80% practical effects/stunt work (roughly) is crazy. The cinematography and editing might be the best that has ever been done in an action movie. Too bad it did not perform better 1) Godzilla: King of the Monsters - again, I am a mark for Godzilla haha. The vibrant colors of the monsters and the monster designs were damn cool. The amount of monster action and absurd human plot lines are on par with most of the Japanese movies (especially the 80s and 90s Heisei era movies) which is why I love it. Also, the scene of Rodan escaping the volcano and chasing the planes is my favorite scene of the year

Seven months later on this but here goes: lol 1. Inception (2010)-Yep. Nolan had an incredible film here. Great story, action, and memorable characters. Just perfect to me. 2. Les Miserables (2012)-this movie makes me cry a lot. It means a lot to me thematically, spiritually, and even musically. I never thought a musical would be my number 2. Lol 3. Django Unchained (2012)-my favorite Tarantino film. Funny, movies and just BA. unforgettable performances. 4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)-my favorite MCU film same as yours and maybe my favorite ever. 5. Knives Out (2019)-a classic mystery with surprises and it was my favorite movie of last year. 6. Logan (2017)-an incredibly moving comic book film and send off to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. 7. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)-I had never seen a Mad Max Film. I almost don’t want to after this and pretend it’s the only one because of how fresh it was to me. It makes Fast and Furious look like Sesame Street. 8. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)-another surprising sequel that could have been a disaster. 9. Prisoners (2013)-I will never forget this film. It’s a terrifying, haunting thriller with underrated performances. 10. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood (2019)-every time I rewatch this film I love it more and more. 11. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)-one of the few Great War films out there. 12. The Nice Guys (2016)-an underrated action comedy that deserves more love. 13. Godzilla (2014)-this film rocked my world and brought out the kid in me again. Awesome experience opening night and an awesome movie despite its flaws. 14. Avengers: Endgame (2019) I don’t know where they can in the cinematic universe after this. It’s so difficult to think of it because it’s so good. I cry a lot during this film. 15. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)-can’t believe they set the bar again with action/stunts. The story is also fantastic too. 16. Captain America: Civil War (2016)-what a great follow up to Winter Soldier with an emotional center. 17. Gravity (2013)-this theater 3-D experience was truly immersive for me. 18. Sicario (2015)-a tense thriller with unforgettable cinematography and amazing performances. 19. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)- enjoyable on so many levels. A science fiction rip off of Ground Hog day but it’s great. 20. Sing Over Me (2014)-this one is special to me because I know the person involved in this. It’s a documentary about the life of a Christian singer with an incredible story/testimony that people will either embrace or hate. 21. The Heat (2013)-one of the few comedies I’ve enjoyed this last decade. 22. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)-DiCaprio should have one for THIS film. What a long crazy 3 hour ride. 23. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)-loved this action film. Set the bar for stunts again. 24. A Quiet Place (2018) such a surprise for me. A suspenseful creature feature with a terrifying premise. 25. The Avengers (2012)-the theater experience was incredible. I didn’t get a chance to see Endgame that way lol

Odd fact about S. Craig Zahler, he used to write for a metal magazine called Metal Maniacs years ago and was one of my favorite writers. I had no idea he made films...so that's cool. Guess I have some home work to do.

It follows is unique, saw the trailer on the big screen which looked scary. When I brought the DVD, wasn't scary but I like the idea of some clever evil human spirit going after people. Slow moving spirit but manages to catch up with victims.

A very interesting list Sir - a number of movies here I still have yet to see (mostly comic-book films), including some I’ll definitely check out. One of those movies, I must admit, is Warriors, which has been on my ‘must-watch’ roster for way too long; this will bring it near the front of the line! A little interesting that horror pictures didn’t figure too much in these twenty-five. While I love It Follows, I’d rather not see a sequel: one of that film’s strengths is that we don’t know anything about where the curse/demon comes from, and a sequel would probably attempt to tell us and therefore ruin the mystery of it (one of the reasons so many horror sequels are bad ideas!). That's the main reason why I'm not looking forward to the upcoming sequel to A Quiet Place. I’m also glad you stuck up for Hacksaw Ridge; too often in modern movies, people with strong religious faith are given the villain’s role, or at least portrayed as old-fashioned and a little bit dumb. To see a different perspective on things was refreshing (and I’m speaking as someone who has never had any faith at all). That’s also part of the reason why I like the sometimes subtle spiritual aspect of films by people like Tarkovsky or Malick. I’m very much with you on Edgar Wright: although I guess I liked his other movies more than you did, I agree that this is best one. If it’s possible to make an ‘action musical,’ he managed it here, and it’s perhaps the best movie in either of those genres in the last decade - and that’s with some stiff competition in both. One of the few comic-book movies I have seen was Deadpool, and it was marvelous: the sense of humor on display is right up my street, and it made the whole thing wonderful fun. It also has perhaps the best opening credits sequence of any movie in the last decade (not a big prize, I know, but still!). Ben Affleck’s first three films as a director are all terrific, but I would probably put The Town at the top of them; it was the first one of his I actually saw (in theaters, no less), and I was very pleasantly surprised. Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino & Christopher Nolan all vied for spots on my own list, but for each one I was thinking of different films: while I loved The Wolf of Wall Street (essentially a comedic Goodfellas, if you look at the story arc & stylistic choices), it was his big, expansive The Irishman that I liked just a tiny bit more. I also enjoyed Django Unchained, but it seemed a little too much like Inglourious Basterds for me to embrace it as much as you. My favorite Tarantino movie of the last ten years (this is where we’ll probably have our biggest disagreement) was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. We both love his movies, but our favorites are very different. As for Nolan and Inception, I enjoyed it but primarily as an action movie: how the dreams connected with the world outside seemed a bit too literal and direct for me (such as when, near the beginning, water flows through all the windows as DiCaprio falls into the tub). Interstellar vies with Memento as my favorite of his movies, and it’s certainly the most ambitious one he’s made. I’m also in agreement with you on Nightcrawler: a terrific film, that probably has more relevance now than then, but one that’s been seen by not nearly enough people. Two movies on your list made my own top ten: Three Billboards & Whiplash. The former took what I thought was going to be a very stereotypical group of people (bad cops, righteous crusading mother, etc.) and twisted things in ways that made the story much more interesting than I was afraid it might have been. Those tweaks also bothered a lot of people (principally the ones who loved the 2019 version of Black Christmas, I think!), but there we are. It’s probably my favorite Martin McDonagh movie, although it’s a close call with In Bruges. Whiplash is easily my favorite Damien Chazelle film, even though I really liked the two movies he’s made subsequently. I agree completely with your description of it, which is perhaps why so many of my Navy colleagues also love the movie: we can relate to it a fair bit! That we see plenty of unsympathetic aspects to the student's character, and even come to understand the viewpoints of the teacher, makes those two people some of the most memorable in any movie of recent years. As for my own top ten, while I still haven’t quite finalized things, I am pretty firm on the top three, so I’ll just list those: #3 - Interstellar (already mentioned this one above; perhaps my favorite Nolan movie, and in the running for my favorite sci-fi film of all time) #2 - Whiplash (also mentioned above) #1 - Hell or High Water by David Mackenzie (while making an end-of-decade list is not simple, this #1 pick was very easy indeed: I’ll say no more about it just in case you haven’t seen it, since I think this is the kind of movie you will like very much; I’ll watch Warriors and you see this one!) (Other films swirling around in the top ten, looking for their place, are American Hustle, Arrival, Before Midnight, Looper, Three Billboards and The Tree of Life. No horror movies on the list, although It Follows was in the running.) One question: since you're not making a worst-of-decade list (and goodness knows I understand why!), do you have a choice for the single worst film of the last ten years? Cheers!

Good picks Cody, and I love Man of steel too, but I can't help but notice you mentioned Tom Hardy pretty often, rightfully so cause he's awesome, but if you ever thought of doing a review of disturbing movies I recently watched one called Bronson, and it stars Tom Hardy. Bronson is grounded, but batshit crazy lol.... I'm a little scarred lol!!!
