Dude, I LOVE that you included Temple of Doom. The final 30 minutes of that movie is some of the most exhilarating action I've ever seen in a film. I adore that movie.

T2 !!! All the way! Forever and always! I love how often you used the word perfect, thats what I sound like when someone asks me to describe this... PERFECTION. In fact I think the dictionary should switch the word 'perfect' to 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day.' I saw this film when I was 7 years old and my life was changed forever. I had been touched by the divine. I have never seen anything like it, anything that would come even remoteley close; and I doubt that I ever will. Terminator 2 is a masterpiece beyond good and evil, beyond reason, logic and rational understanding, it defies the laws of nature how good this film is, it cannot be seen, it can only be experienced. Terminator 2 is a masterpiece of the most epic of proportions, it is THE masterpiece, it is the single greatest thing ever commited to film, it is the best film of all fuckin time!

A few of my underrated actioners. Haywire with Gina Carano; can't explain why I love it but it plays like a slimmer riff on the assassin chase movie. Great cast, brutually fun action, no fat on the bones. Stephen Soderbergh proves he can do more than heist films. Watchmen-The feel of a massive period mystery alongside a larger than life story of fallen heroes. Killer cast, brutal fight scenes. Zack Snyders a hit or miss director for me but this still feels special in its own right.

Much like the Top 50 Horror list (came out after this one but was the first of the two I watched) this is a great list, and definitely shows a passion for the genre that doesn't stereotypically run straight to the typical picks. Well done, sir! A few of mine are as follows: 15. Batman (1989) / Batman Returns (1992); Keaton will always and forever be my Batman, and I'm so excited he's returning to the role. 14. The Crow (1994); it's dark. Man, is it dark. But it is an action film nonetheless, and one of the greatest ever made. It has its own place in time, for sure. Unforgettable. 13. Predator 2 (1990); as much as I love the original, and I do, this is the one that just does it for me. I also love that this is where the AVP lore began. 12. The Terminator (1984); what more can be said here? 11. RoboCop (1987); "I'LL BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!". The first R-Rated film I ever saw as a kid. Special credit to Rob Bottin, a special FX guru who has never gotten the credit he deserves for his contributions to the art. 10. The Highlander (1986); it pains me that they're trying to remake this. Another one of those films that's just absolutely timeless. 9. Jet Li's Fearless - Director's Cut (2008); can't say enough good things about this. Just classic in a modern time. Timeless. 8. Troy (2004); the epic period piece to end all period pieces, and the Director's Cut is even better. 7. The Transporter (2002) / Transporter 2 (2005); talk about a set of films that don't get talked about nearly enough. These movies are so good it's stupid. 6. Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995); it just starts kicking ass right off the jump and just doesn't stop. Ever. 5. Aliens (1986); a masterpiece. I know I use that word a lot, but it is. And the "Special Edition" Cut makes it even better. 4. Rocky IV (1985) / Creed II (2018); I can't have one without the other. Great action pieces that kick ass and inspire, and are two of the greatest sports movies ever made. 3. Bloodsport (1988); I can still here that voice on TBS in the 90's: "MOVIES FOR GUYS WHO LIKE MOVIES!!!". It's beauty and greatness are in its simplicity. Just a simple, straight up martial arts movie, and one of the most entertaining. Great score as well. And it's one of the major reasons we have Johnny Cage! 2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990); pretty sure I don't have enough space in this comment box to talk about everything I love about this film. The story, the atmosphere, that instantly recognizable and hella effective Jon Du Prez score, THOSE SUITS. Those animatronic suits are so convincing even to this day that my brain still can't separate the effects from the movie. Just everything about this movie is amazing. Also stands in my top 5 of all time. 1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991); my favorite Action film, favorite Sci-Fi film, favorite sequel all in one, and is in the top 5 of my list of favorite films of all time. To me this will always stand untouched as the greatest special effects masterpiece in the history of film. Everything that it was able to accomplish in its time is as breathtaking today as it was when it was new.

Where do I start with First Blood? That movie is NOT just some mindless action flick like some of the sequels turned into. It is a very soulful movie about a man in extreme emotional pain who was the camel whose back cracked from that one last piece of straw. In fact, the ending in the book and an alternate film ending brought about the topic of "police" suicide (at the hands of his former CO Cornel Trautman ) as his final solution to his mental torment. That last scene where Rambo spills his heart to Trautman had to be one of the most highly charged, tear jerking conversations in cinematic history.

Wow, very impressive list! Just going off the top of my head, I'd probably have Die Hard, T2, and Aliens as my Holy Trinity of action flix. I know, not very original. But they're just so hard to top. After that, I'd have movies like Predator, The Bourne Ultimatum, the last few in the MI series, Lethal Weapon 4 (mainly cause of Jet Li), and True Lies up there. Loved True Lies, but I think the one thing that kept it from being an absolute classic was its lack of a memorable villain. You can't stack up 'generic angry Middle Eastern dude' against Xenomorphs, the T-1000, or Hans Gruber.

Happy New Year Sir (I’m a few hours early, but what the Hell). Knew there’d be plenty of differences right away when you said you weren’t much into martial-arts movies; took me a while to get into them, but it finally happened and I’m glad I did, to the point where if I’m in the mood to watch a fun, turn-your-brain-off-and-let-it-wash-over-you action picture, I’m much more likely to pop in a Hong Kong fight film than an ’80s guns-and-guts flick (though I still enjoy those too). If you’re ever in the mood to give that sub-genre a try, may I recommend The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which is probably the best Shaw Brothers movie. While the late 1960s through early 1980s were great for the Shaw Brothers Studio (I’m less of a Jackie Chan fan, and even less of a Bruce Lee fan, though both have made some good films), the late 1980s and beyond were a bit drier for great Hong Kong action, at least of the martial arts variety (John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow shifted the focus to guns & gangsters). Still, there were some good ones during this period, such as Iron Monkey, the Once Upon a Time in China series with Jet Li, Swordsman II (Jet Li again) as well as Fist of Legend (also starring Jet Li, and a remake of a Bruce Lee movie). The newer, more art-house-style martial arts movies are a bit of a mixed bag for me: I’ve never cared for Crouching Tiger, which started the trend, but Zhang Yimou’s Hero (Jet Li popping up yet again!) is flat-out fantastic and one of the greatest of all action movies. If you want to sample a newer movie of the genre (as opposed to one from the Shaw Brothers era), then try this. Before someone asks me why I’m less fond of Jackie Chan & Bruce Lee, I’ll answer: I love Jackie Chan’s action sequences, but the comedy & physical gags less so; and Bruce Lee is usually the only asset in his movies, which are otherwise pretty low-rent (Enter the Dragon excepted). Another director I should mention is King Hu; he started out with the Shaw Brothers Studio in the 1960s and made Come Drink With Me, which is the movie that made the martial-arts genre get taken more seriously (similarly to what Stagecoach did for Westerns in the 1930s); however, he left Hong Kong soon after and made more movies in Taiwan, including Dragon Inn (which got a pretty good remake in the 1990s) and A Touch of Zen (which is over three hours long, but well worth it). At least you did get one John Woo movie on here, though; a lot of Hong Kong directors came to Hollywood in the 1990s in the years before the handover to China, but only he had any real success here (the rest went back within a few years), and Face/Off is fantastic. Nic Cage’s first appearance alone makes the movie worth watching. His earlier, Hong-Kong-based movies you might enjoy, as they’re more like Hollywood ’80s action movies with a lot of over-the-top gunplay and borderline-homoeroticism (for that matter, Face/Off was probably the closest that ’90s action movies got to that kind of thing, along with Point Break); Hard Boiled is my favorite of those, by a wide margin, and if you haven’t seen it (which I’m guessing you haven’t, or it’d be way up on this list) you really must - it’s absolutely perfect for you. While I’m not quite as big a fan of the Schwarzenegger or Stallone ’80s movies as you, I would pick them over many of the action films of the 1990s & early 2000s, where the tendency was to tone them down in order to get a PG-13, to the degree that there wasn’t much point in watching them. Of course, it’s possible to make a great action movie that isn’t R-rated (just as it’s possible to do that with a horror movie), but it’s very difficult. The late 2000s, and especially this decade just concluded, brought back the hard-R action movie, making the last 10-15 years one of the very best eras for action flicks (the John Wick series, the Dredd reboot, the original Kingsman, Baby Driver and so on). Dredd is a perfect example - if you compare it to the 1995 original - of how the genre has improved between those decades. This period, and this type of movie, is where we’re most in agreement. Having said all that about the 1990s, I agree with you very much on Speed; for years it was the only Keanu Reeves movie I’d seen, so I never understood why so many people dumped on him. So glad to see him score again with the John Wick movies. Shows that, when an action director was willing to go for something violent or R-rated during that decade, they could make a pretty good film. I also enjoyed The Matrix, but since I didn’t get around to seeing it until my mid-20s it doesn’t have as much nostalgic appeal for me. (Since it was choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping, who made some great Hong Kong action flicks, including Iron Monkey, I reiterate that you might want to take a closer look at that genre.) Also glad to see a Bond movie here; there are so many that it’s easy to overlook them for a list like this (“Do I just put the whole series as one entry? Do I try to pick out just a few and put them individually?”). This is probably my sentimental favorite; it’s the first Bond movie I ever saw - watched it probably a year before the game came out, which I also loved - and is still a very good one. Casino Royale, Martin Campbell’s other Bond entry, is terrific too (just a little better than Goldeneye, as you said) as are the ones by Sam Mendes. My favorite of the older films would probably be Thunderball. If/when you do get around to watching all the Bonds, this will probably end up being one of the few franchises for which I have more nostalgic affection than you do, as I watched them all many times when I was young (even the really stupid ones from the 1970s). As I said before on the comedies ranking - where the distinction was funniest vs. best overall - I have two different answers to my #1 action movie, depending on what exactly is asked (best overall or most exciting). The answer to the former is pretty easy: Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West. Some may not included it here because it’s a Western, or because it’s not always very fast-paced, but it’s one of my very, very favorite movies of all time and it would have to win here. Leone’s earlier Dollars Trilogy would also rate a mention. The latter (most exciting) is a bit trickier to answer, but right now I’d probably go with the original Raid; it’s as close to being a 90-minute sustained fight sequence as you can get, and yet it doesn’t become boring or monotonous (though I know some would disagree on that). Comparisons with Dredd and Die Hard are deserved, with the emphasis being more on hand-to-hand combat than gunplay. The second Raid movie is terrific as well, but with more plot than just nonstop fighting (imagine if the sequel to Die Hard was The Departed and you’ll be in the right ballpark). Having mentioned both of those films, and already having said how much I love Asian fight movies, it should be no surprise that Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill duo would also place on a list of my favorites; while neither are my favorite of Tarantino’s movies (probably not even in the top three or four, actually), they’re the only ones that I’d call action movies. (Continued below - too long for one comment!)

. . . Going back to 1980s & 2010s hard-hitting action, there’s one series that has entries in both periods: the Mad Max franchise, which I was glad to see take a spot here. Would probably put the whole series as one entry on a list like this; the fourth film is generally the favorite now, with the third a bit of a pariah, but I’d put them all pretty close together. The fourth movie also manages to pull off a similar trick to what I said the first Raid did: be a film that’s almost all one long chase scene without it becoming dull. My only problem with it (which may seem like a nitpick) is how it looked: Miller seemed to be going more for a comic-book look for this one, with the blue nights and the rest of the color schemes, which didn’t fit with the grimier, more low-budget look of the other three (a similar issue I have every Star Wars film made after the originals - they just don’t seem to be in the same universe, if you will, and for a would-be world-building franchise, that’s a problem.) Also glad to see Temple of Doom here; it gets a lot of hatred (which I can understand, even if I don’t agree with it), but I’d put it second behind the original Raiders (which I’m a little surprised not to see on this list - was sure it would be here after seeing the second film appear early on!). Agree with you on all three James Cameron films that you mentioned, the only surprise being that the original Terminator didn’t make it four (though maybe it’ll make your horror list - certainly it could fit comfortably in either category). Very pleased to see the third Die Hard here; it was the first of that series that I ever saw, and I love it almost as much as the original. No coincidence that John McTiernan directed both films. I still haven’t re-watched Predator (also by McTiernan), though I really should; maybe I’ll love it as much as I was expecting to. Wish the original Lethal Weapon could have made it here, but at least one entry from that series did make an appearance. Like you, I didn’t see Point Break until I was in my 20s, but I didn’t take to it as much as you did; Strange Days, Kathryn Bigelow’s next movie, is terrific, however. Haven’t seen The Edge, but the cast is good and Lee Tamahori is a fine director (Once Were Warriors is great, if a bit tough to watch at times), so I’ll seek it out. One film I was certain would make it on here - and not just be on the list, but be high up - was Walter Hill's The Warriors (unless it is here and I just had a moment of stupidity and missed it); I assume it fell just below the top fifty? Finally, I’m sure someone has already mentioned this, but you have a second remake on your list (The Italian Job), and, strictly speaking, Assault on Precinct 13 is a remake of a remake (the original, and best, being Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo, which is easily my favorite John Wayne movie, and would also make my list). Speaking of John Wayne (or rather Kurt Russell’s imitation of him), and of John Carpenter, Big Trouble in Little China is a favorite of mine too - The Thing is the only film of his I like more.

I am putting my list of top 25 action movies. These are movies which have action as the base so in fact almost all many super hero, sci fi. and other genres are not included. Does include lot of martial arts movies. Action is the base here. 1. Matrix - For path breaking action scenes, VFX and an interesting plot of man versus machine. 2. Die Hard - For the most well executed setting of one man against all odds and superb performance from Alan Rickman. 3. Terminator 2 - As you said one of most accomplished movies ever made in terms of thrills and action and VFX. Thirty years have passed but never that level of technical brilliance was ever matched. 4. Rambo First Blood - A good character study plus the plot of a wronged man turning the tables on his tormentors. It is they who drew First Blood, not me sums this movie up. 5. Con Air - A very exciting set up that that is Die Hard rip off but brings the uniqueness of plane or air travel in it and amplifies the number of bad guys. 6. Escape from LA - A combination of futuristic elements combined with bad ass performance from Kurt Russel make this a very good action movie. Highly underrated. 7. Duel - Spielberg's debut movie about a ordinary man tormented by a truck is the perfect execution of the cat and mouse game with great suspense and tension from start to finish. 8. Runaway Train - A superb thriller that remains of the best chase movies ever made. Outstanding performances from the two leads. In fact from all the 4 leads. Sorry not remembering anybody's name. 9. Charlies Angels I - Its definitely sexist and cheesy but you cannot deny that the trio of Drew Barrymore Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz brought great charm and fun to their roles of 3 bimbos trying to bring criminals down. 10. Total Recall - A great setting , a twisted screenplay and Arnold 's efficiency as the perfect action hero make it very entertaining. 11. Terminator I - Never talked as much but a very good action movie that is incredibly thrilling and well directed. Did not have the budget or technical brilliance of Terminator 2 but everything else is as good as the sequel. 12. Taken - Led by a superb performance from Liam Neeson and a plot that is absolutely razor sharp Taken is a movie that turned the action genre on its head. Was the modern Die Hard for me. Now for some of those martial arts movies 13. Enter the Dragon - May have a dated feel and its action sequences have been bettered in subsequent movies but Enter The Dragon was what you called the trail blazer for the martial arts specialist becoming the quintessential action hero 14. Shaolin Soccer - Soccer mixed with martial arts and some incredibly over the top action sequences make it very memorable action movie. 15. Hard Target - A movie starring JCVD that is criminally underrated but has the most wide range of martial arts and hand to hand action sequences. 16. Rush Hour I - No discussion of martial arts can be complete without Jackie Chan. And his partnership Chris Tucker remains the most endearing of all buddy cop movies. Do you speak English. Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth ? 17. Kung Fu Hustle - If you talk of style in martial arts movies then none of them have matched the style of this movie. We return to guns and explosions. 18. Speed - As you mentioned the thrill of the ride is what makes this movie so great. 19. The Quick and the Dead - The only Western in the list but Sam Raimi's style and ensemble cast of Stone, Crowe Hackman and DiCaprio makes this this very entertaining movie. 20. Desperado - Speaking of style none capture the Latino South American flavor better than this crazy shootout heavy movie starring Banderas and Salma Hayek. 21- Robocop - A Terminator rip off but its intelligence and intellect make Robocop a great action movie. Surprised the franchise never really got going. 22. John Wick 4 - One of the better modern action movies, John Wick brings both style and heart to action movies. Something lacking these days. 23. Extraction 2 - Many may disagree but the relentlessness, and the craft of the Extraction 2 is just remarkable. That was the idea of this series. Hemsworth cannot stop until its over. 24. Universal Soldier - Its a blatant Terminator ripoff but what makes this movie work is the fact that its one of the best if not the best B-grade action movies ever made. What Ronald Emmerich achieved with the budget and resources of this movie cannot be matched. And its highly entertaining. 25. Die Hard II - A very underrated sequel that is far better than dozens and scores of Die Hard rip offs we have seen.
