It's a complete betrayal of the whole idea that made the original great. Namely the ambiguity of the cenobites. In the original story they're not the villains, two humans driven by their own perversions and lust are the villains. The cenobites are just referees. But leave it for Weinstein to come in and say "OH THEY'RE DEMONS! ADD EXPLOSIONS AND HAVE PINHEAD BE A CACKLING FREDDY KNOCK-OFF". People whine about the sequels, but both INFERNO and JUDGMENT have more in common with the feel of the original idea of HELLRAISER (even if JUDGMENT introduces angels it does so in a SPAWN-like way that feels more akin to HELLRAISER). HELLRAISER III is the ultimate Bob Weinstein HELLRAISER. A movie that feels like it was produced by a 13-year old meathead. If it wasn't a HELLRAISER movie I'd probably have more fun with it, but it kind of bugs me as a HELLRAISER sequel. I suppose it works if you treat it like a stand alone tale.

Pinhead really started to pick up his one-liner game in this movie. I think the first 2/3 has a lot of scary and tense moments, goes off the rails a bit in the third act. Best of the ending is Pinhead in the church, great imagery there.

The first Hellraiser is a masterpiece. Hellbound is an unfocused mess. Hell on Earth is a crass commercialization of the story, and I can't say much nice about it except in comparison to most of the sequels that followed--namely that it never goes to space and that it's not a repurposed script that was originally unrelated to Hellraiser. One of the worst things about it is its overuse of Pinhead, inexplicably making him the main antagonist and thereby completely demystifying him.

Either this movie or Bloodline are my favorite in the whole series that are a tier above the OG, for one the main character Joey is easily one of my favorite Final Girls of all time I also find her backstory of her Father in Vietnam interesting too and how Pinhead would manipulate this emotion, I also like seeing Elliot Spencer aka Pinhead when he was human you see the good redemption side of Pinhead essentially it was good to see the dialogue between him and Joey is some of the BEST things I have seen seeing Elliot Spencer in a war ridden barren wasteland, add to that the new Cenobites I thought were real kool as well as freakin Armored Saint playing in a nightclub just before Pinhead massacres everyone in there. This movie also expands lore on Pinhead’s mortal form you learn more of his backstory before he became victim of the Lament Box and became Pinhead with the aftermath of WWI and how he became more Misanthropic and Nihilistic all together and indulge in Libertine fantasies this led to him crossing path with the Lament Box and the rest is history. This movie is one of my top 2 favorite if not favorite for its astounding Storytelling and Lore Building alone added with perks of new kool Cenobites, awesome score and you have a masterpiece that is this movie. Then Hellraiser Bloodline does well by bringing the story to full circles as it could’ve ended with that movie as it goes into the Origins of the Lament Box itself. That’s why Bloodline and Hell On Earth are the BEST movies in the series IMO.

I'll give it that its nice seeing the dynamics between Pinhead and Eliott and the nightclub massacre scene. But, this is where the Hellraiser franchise took the dive away from the Gothic quality and mystical exploration it had.

While I can enjoy it on a certain level, it has a couple big flaws for me. First is that it’s far too polished and MTV-esque, like Nightmare 4. The grit and grime and darkness of the first two movies is nowhere to be found here, and I think that helped make Hellraiser stand out from the other horror franchises. The big studio polish here takes away some of that charm. But my bigger problem is Pinhead and the direction he goes here. Pinhead was all about order and structure and rules; he wasn’t evil for the sake of it, and it could even be argued that he wasn’t evil. He was just a soldier. The end of Hellbound sets up that his original identity, Eliot Spencer, has escaped the curse of Pinhead, leaving this demon behind. Because of this, the Pinhead in H3 is all id, no humanity whatsoever. Story-wise, it makes sense. But it takes away what made Pinhead special. People could reason and bargain with Pinhead in the first two movies. Here, he’s just a bloodthirsty maniac, and … we’ve seen that. It’s nothing special. It’s been done.
