I’d also nominate LEGOS for the best engineered product. Maintaining tolerances of 1 micrometer on a mass produced, injection molded part is incredible. As a mechanical engineer in a different industry, we have trouble holding much, much looser tolerances and costs scale extremely quickly with more precision. Their process control is incredible.

I think my number one complaint with Filson is really the prices they are charging for stuff that is just nothing special. It would be one thing to keep prices lower by outsourcing, or raise prices but keep it domestic. At this rate, Filson charges a similar premium to the super high-quality Japanese brands (i.e. Iron Heart) but they just don't have the same quality, attention to detail, or frankly manufacturing standards that distinguish the high-end Japanese brands. Its fine to charge a high price if you actually get what you pay for, or are trying to keep domestic manufacturing alive, but thats not what Filson is doing these days.

Daft eh, but I lost my Dad some years back, and it’s little stories that spark your own memories and moments. As always, thank you for what you do. Have a great weekend with the family 🙌👍

Great stuff as always Carl...love the story you shared about your father. You are very blessed to have those great memories of him. Treasure those memories, my friend. Not everyone has those great memories of their father. Fun fact, the inventor of the pull top opener on beverage cans was from my home town Dayton OH. Keep up the great work, and don't forget to make those memories with your kiddos.....

My new way to approach Filson is "will this be a good deal when it is 30-40% off?", in which most cases the answer is "yes". The sales they had around Christmas were huge, and other Filson retailers have been putting products on 30-40% discount lately. Not a good sign for the company but kinda great for the consumer.

My now ten year old daughter is the reason I got back into video games (very limited especially with a one year I’m chasing around most of the day) and her interest in breath of the wild. I will still pick that up or tears of the kingdom when I have a moment, just wanting to zen out rock climbing, horseback riding or making an off-road vehicle in TOK. It’s a good way to blow off steam as a business owner but also stay at home dad and caretaker to a chronically ill wife. Regarding hoody strings, I actually use them quite a bit if I want to wear a ball cap while on my tractor and keep my ears warm (like when we got 20” of snow last weekend) I’ll cinch that bad boy right up. Finally you’re doing great, take the time you need and it stinks when you feel overwhelmed to the point of having a hard time doing anything (common with ADHD folk like me).

When you gotta step back that's what you have to do and I'm sure all of us understand. Right during the pandemic I was working so much. My company paid time in a half of course, double time for Sundays and triple time for holidays. I had gotten my biggest check I'd ever gotten time in a half for 2 Saturdays. I had 2 Sundays and a holiday in there. A week later I was sicker then I'd ever been in my life. I'd gotten Covid not the Covid of now the first one I was bed ridden and terrible. And I know it was just work, work not taking care of myself not getting enough rest. So if you have to step back Carl and just do you that'll be ok and we'll all be here. 😀

I get seasonal depression a lot around this time. It’s overwhelmingly crushing. (A Super Bowl loss doesn’t help either lol!) Society as a whole is very negative right now and it’s hard to participate in it. I recommend finding a _third place,_ meaning not your home or work where you can find like minded people to hang out with. That place can help a lot.

The best part about capitalism is we the consumer get to choose what products we spend our money on, marketing be damned. That’s why I did your take on companies like Filson & Brunt so much. Value and cheap and not synonymous because expensive items can still be labeled as a value, so long as the quality is there. Unfortunately it seems Filson isn’t as interested in providing the same value as before while Brunt continues to masquerade as value while really just being cheap. If you’re looking for an extra little pick me up, in the form of some rocking tunes, might I humbly suggest Rival Sons “Keep on Swinging”. It’s one of their older songs off the Head Down album but it’s a great song (off a great album).

You might want to compare that Duluth Pack to Frost River---comparable, about the same price point. There are several of these old school Minnesota companies. RE: your mention of the aluminum cans made me poke around the environmental impact issues. I learned that aluminum is way less toxic and impactful than glass but, alas, it too is far from benign. What's gotten appreciably better, "engineered" to near perfection in my lifetime? In America it has to be craft beer---I remember when a Sam Adams was a novelty or maybe even a Heineken, there might be some exotic British import stout, and there was Guinness. But nowadays, as the world comes to an end, democracy is endangered, and Filson becomes an overpriced fashion brand, beer is at an all time best. Just a thought, Carl. Here's to feeling a whole lot better.
