For anyone out there who are constantly afraid of how you dress, if there's one thing I learned growing up is that, unless your fashion senses are abysmally broken, it doesn't really matter how you dress as long as you wear it with pride. I live in a big city, Montréal Canada to be precise, where everyone has a different style due to the staggering amount of diversity we have here. No matter what I wear, whether I'm rocking a semi-formal getup or wearing the geekiest shirts I possess, I always get smiles at me or sometimes have strangers strike up a conversation. From what my friends and loved ones told me, it's simply because I exude confidence and approachability whenever I walk or talk to someone. Your dressing style is a reflection of who you are at your core. I rather you dress in what makes you feel comfortable than trying to dress like someone you're not just to satisfy social norms. Be yourself, don't let shame guide your life. I'm more likely to talk to someone who dresses with passion instead of conformity. Authenticity is everything.

"Your dressing style is a reflection of who you are at your core. I rather you dress in what makes you feel comfortable than trying to dress like someone you're not just to satisfy social norms." 100% agreed. This is a good video (at least I think so) for dressing in this kind of style. And there's nothing wrong with this style. But, I'm someon who dresses up in a nerdy t-shirt and neon, mismatched shorts. That is *my* style. Is it for everyone? No. Is "less adult" than what was showcased here? Arguably. But it's what I'm into, it's what I feel comfortable in. The "casual" outfits showcased in this video I would consider formal and I would feel really uncomfortable in them. Never mind something like a suit. And, with dating, I want a woman to be into me, not the sanitized version. This is who I am, loud and proud. Will so people be turned away? Sure. But if there is someone meant for me, she won't be.

@@5ofspades427 I am dressing to impress, just not in the typical way. I am making an impression about who am I, my personality and my interests. That will undoubtably make a more accurate impression then if I wore uncomfortable clothes that I don't like the look of and don't represent me. What is the point of trying to force the typical style onto everyone? "Cursed is the church guy who wears sneakers to mass" Church is an entirely different matter. Of course I'm not going to wear t-shirts there.

I work in the entertainment/production industry where black is the norm. 95% of my wardrobe is black items or low color keys. I wear black sneakers at work for comfort but other times Red Wing boots or black Birkenstock if the heat is unbearable. If I wear denim it has to be black or very dark non stretch (100% cotton). I'm very happy with my items and the way I dress.

Diversity often comes from embracing complexity and celebrating the richness of different perspectives, styles, and cultures. Simplifying will lead to homogeneity rather than diversity, as it may overlook the unique elements that contribute to individuality and cultural richness. Why not wear a T-Shirt of your last hackathon or Sportsclub? The experiences you made, make you who you are. If you like who you are show it. Confidence is key when interacting with other People. "Pretty" Cloth wont change that.

I had an epiphany the other day. Most men don’t understand what it means for clothes to fit you properly. We grew up wearing clothes that were too big for us because our moms would buy clothes too big for us because we would grow into them and she didn’t want to waste too much money when we grow out of them. Now we have a generation of men who thinks wearing oversized tshirts and always pulling up your pants is normal.

9:40 - I like mixing "juvenile" looking pieces with elevated elements such as the faded blue denim jacket you mentioned here paired with a dress shirt and dress pants using elevated weaves and fabrics along with elevated accessories like a silk neckerchief. I think combinations like these plays with these traditional tropes which then conveys a unique story.

Ultimately guys, just be self observant. Recognise when your clothing is getting tatty, no longer fits or is perhaps just a little outdated. That said though, do you. I absolutely love what Courtney does, but we also need to remember that this is somewhat her taste in men and her opinion on fashion. Another huge point is that when you are yourself, you attract who likes you for you and you'd never have to pretend to be someone you're not. Ever since I've started buying my own clothes, I've had compliments about how I dress, and I mostly put this down to knowing myself and thinking outside the box. I know what suits me, and I don't follow fashion which means I often stand out (for good reason based on the compliments haha). If everyone was dressing as Courtney recommended, do you really think we would all flourish, or would this standard then become stale? As a digital creative, I understand colour theory so implement matching/opposite colours, seasonal palettes as well as what compliments my skin tone. I'm 33 and my dress sense hasn't really changed all that much (except things have become better fitting), i've just brought in new elements. Just do you, but question where you could be going wrong so to not get so comfortable.

This is good reinforcement, thank you. I worked out the plain fitted T-shirt and dark slim jeans thing a while ago - more out of laziness/simplicity than because of any sense of style (plus you save cash by not wearing ‘branded’ Tees). Can team those two simple base items with a casual sports jacket, cardigan or classy fitted utility jacket. Same with footwear. Dress it up with leather shoes/boots, or even down to a pair of fresh/clean Vans slip-ons (…beachside locale). Can also add a flat cap, scarf etc to suit weather conditions.

In the last year I have moved from graphic tees to Fresh Clean Threads solid color tees. Pairing that with Bonobos has been a big upgrade from too large jeans and graphic tees. Shoes are different story because nice boots like you showed rarely come in wide (4E+) sizes, so we’re left with whatever is available. Thanks for the free tips. Regardless of age, sometimes a man still wants to feel youthful, a graphic T-shirt can bring out some liveliness from your inner rockstar or skater. Your style should be an expression of yourself, and so while its important to know how to dress as an adult when it's needed, it's also true that adults aren't monolithic, and that it's okay to dress in a way that inspires a younger crowd just getting into fashion to be expressive.

I hear you. But I'm definitely up there in age, and wearing a Rolling Stones "lips" T-shirt feels like trying too hard. What works for me if I want a graphic T-shirt is something much more subdued-James Perse's "Yosemite" line is a nice option (and feels like heaven) or a classic Armor-Lux Breton-striped tee. Or I'll layer a Henley T-shirt from Merz Schwanen or The Real McCoys over a light tank top or simple neck pendant.

@@miketrotman9720 whatever makes you happy, a graphic t doesn't have to be too graphic if you know what I'm saying 😅 I just don't like the idea that rockers, skaters, or guys who work on guys may seem "juvenile" because they wear T-shirts. I had an awesome mustang in my younger days, and so wearing a t with a mustang on it doesn't seem too childish to me, it's portrays the opposite which is men like cars, men can wear T-shirts without it seeming immature or sloppy

Totally agree with this. purchasing clothing without paying a premium for logos means you can usually get better quality material on an item of clothing that will stay in style for a longer period of time. Classic men pieces can stay in style for decades like a Harrington jacket or aviator sunglasses. I personally don’t understand the appeal of Gucci or LV. You are paying a lot of money to purchase a product that makes you look fake rich.

I have a funny story about LV. My wife wanted an LV bag for years. I worked a bunch of overtime one holiday season and saved up about $1200 Cash for her. We took a weekend trip to New Orleans and popped into the LV store down there. You would think the place was full wealthy well-mannered folks. It was full of poorly dressed old ladies that looked like they all smoked a pack a day. Everyone was swiping cards to buy bags. One lady split the bill between a card that reached its limit and another one she had in her purse. The experience changed my wife's perspective. If anyone can swipe a card for it, is it really all that exclusive? We spent that cash on other fun experiences in the city, and never looked at expensive bags again.

Im a tall guy and work a blue-collar job. Im big into music, so i typically wear a band t-shirt and black or dark jeans. My legs are my biggest feature and typically wear skinny, straight, or at times bootcut jeans/pants. When i dress casually, i feel pretty good or get told how nice i look. Half my wardrobe is band t's while the other is a solid color or plaid/flannel button up with said dark pants. I think the biggest takeaway from this is to take care of yourself and dont overdue your outfit. You can do simple and comfortable outfits, and it can do so much for you.

A similar video for young men at work would be good. There seems to be no boundary between casual and work settings since Covid. I am 60 year old man and can remember the exact day in the 1990s when wearing a suit at work was no longer required at my employer (an investment bank) so its been coming for some time. I haven't worn a suit for 3 years and now am working in an office environment again have had to find a whole new smart casual but professional look. Younger professional men around me just look a mess quite often. I go for smart chinos, brogue shoes, button down or stiff collared short and quarter zip pullover. I do wear more casual when working from home but still need to be online and want to look good on camera in Teams meetings as I often am. I just don't think wearing T shirts, training shoes and even track suits and baggy jumpers is a good look in any work setting.

Fantastic video. I have to admit, I was a little hesitant to see what a woman was going to say to a man on casual style. As a sartorialist since about the age of 12, I certainly have an opinion. Thankfully, my open-mindedness was rewarded with your great video. Especially in regards to simplicity. Yes, simplicity creates versatility. You can basically throw many of these items together and you're good to go. Your shoes-section really hit home. I was at a home-improvement store and saw this young man wearing flip-flops while carrying a large amount of items. I'm like "don't you have anything better to wear?" But I see flip-flops too often. It's just a bad look outside the beach. And on the New York City subway, 95% of people are wearing sneakers. If a man isn't wearing sneakers, it's probably construction boots as it's their job. I may have been prejudice when initially looking at your video. But when I think about it more, most of the time, a woman will improve her partner's look. Once in a while, she'll over feminize him or have him wear something overly trendy. But most of the time, it's tasteful. Well done.

1. I get it loud and clear about keeping it simple and not having big logos on things, but its easier said than done. most cases we have only big logo to choose with color options being black, white brown, grey, blue, green if you´re lucky, some strange tone of yellow, orange - hard to find. Red is almost impossible to find, but colors aside, big logos are almost always on everything (very annoying). 2. Picking based on body type is good, but we mostly get straight type, not V shape i have, plus color options are are even more limited (and yes the logos have to be big on everything). Finding right size is always an issue. Getting the right fit with color preference is impossible without getting it custom made.. Getting the right fit without color preference is still impossible task. Getting anything below L size is hard. Even size M is hard to find.. 3. Denim to suit body type again hard to find, most are straight cut. Hardest thing in the world to find to suit body type. Tones narrow it down hard for us. Easiest way to ruin entire look. 3. Shoes tend to do us favors. Still hard to find. To match color even harder. 4. Color tends to be an issue yet again with jackets or ANY type of anything you wear over anything. BIG logos everywhere. Color options are almost non-existent. Size is hard to find above M if even that. 5. LOGOS ARE BIG ON EVERYTHING. So yeah, its simple basics. 6. Most every store has 75 percent for women to choose what they like. We get 25 percent divided between everything we want to wear - including underwear. That is a ridiculous amount to choose from.

I was a late bloomer when realizing the importance of dressing well and looking put together. As soon as I had a pair of shoes just for the gym and a pair of shoes for actually going out, I immediately got compliments. If you're a dude reading this and you have just that one pair of shoes for the gym, running errands, going on dates AND other special occasions, they probably smell horrible and they make you look like every other "normal" guy. It's really a sea of sameness out there and I was guilty of it for yeeeeeears.

I’ve thought of this. But, retired, go to the gym, live on an acreage which requires work clothes, I loaf around in sweats most of the time. Where I live I have to wear a big parka 5 months of the year. I have a huge wardrobe from previous work, and Golf and beach ware. Wear runners 99% of the time. Nobody would call me a bad dresser when I go out, but nobody would call me a good dresser either. I call the look ultra casual cheap.😂

important to remember that denim is better as an investment so buy good quality and tailor your fit instead of buying cheap that kind of fit right. Also you only need to get measured once, from then take your well fitted jeans along with your new one and ask for it to be tailored identically.

There’s an adage amongst motorcycle riders that goes “Ride your own ride.” It simply means that you should ride in a way that suits your comfort level, skill, and ability. Never mind how others ride, or what they might think about your style of riding. As a mature man who works outdoors, is survival minded and driven by the urban environment I live and operate in, my clothing on a given day is frequently chosen with the idea in mind that the day might include unforeseen circumstances. For example, I always wear shoes or boots I can run in (either towards or away from something). In colder weather I’ll wear a good base layer regardless of whether or not I plan on being outdoors. Because I always carry a handgun, pants and shorts need to be sturdy enough to support a heavy webbed belt that securely holds a holster and full size handgun with spare magazines. I love having a wide variety of shirts and jackets that I can wear tucked or draped over my pistol for concealment. I have a close friend in his 50’s who occasionally wears Keds and Hey Dudes (but NEVER at the same time). He dresses much the way I do otherwise, and because he’s a 25 year SWAT operator he gets a pass on the footwear. I enjoyed your video and I did learn a few things to put in to practice.

You uploaded this a few days after my conversation with my dad about wanting a more mature style since I’ll be 30 this year. There’s no reason why I should be dressing like a high school student. Right now, I’m focusing on getting clothes for work since that’s where I spend most of my time but I’m strategically getting clothes that can be worn at work and if I’m going out with friends. The style at my job tends to be very casual and I dress somewhere in between business casual and casual. Eventually, I want to get some suits and a few really nice dress shoes but considering the fact that I won’t need to wear those any time soon, it would make sense for me to get them.

You can start with a versatile pair of dress shoes such as dark brown cap-toe Oxfords. These can be sported with a pair of jeans as well as with suits. Regarding jeans, as said Courtney, selvedge sewing is the best and most robust. Look for raw denim pants, therefore: they’ll adjust to your shape and become a unique piece of clothing over time. If you love them and wear them well, they’ll give you beautiful fades in specific spots of the fabric. 😊

Thank you for some great advice! I just turned 62, although I've been told I look much younger than my age. In addition to being a radio broadcaster, I also do a solo acoustic guitar/vocal act. I've avoided trying to dress like a 20-year old (overly tight jeans with sequins on the back pockets). During music gigs, I keep it conservative -- collared dress shirt and nice slacks for upscale wine bars. For more casual gigs, a collard shirt of polo shirt, and well-fit khakis, or quality jeans. I keep my haircut short, as I'm active in the business world, and it's less maintenance than longer hair styles. I've found younger women like shower hair on men, while women who were teens during the 60's, prefer longer hair. I'd be curious for your thoughts on this. Thanks!

I still dress the same as i did as a 9th grader... Idk if its a Cali Valley/Venice type of thing, but all my friends & i, still 2 this day, still all dress the same... few pairs of different color dickies(khaki, navy blue, black), only white, black or navy blue solid tees with no logos or pockets & thats just always been the style out here, lol, over 30 years of dressing like this & i don't plan on stopping... The only thing i change is the shoes & jackets but thats such a minor thing that integrates easily within the main uniforms, low top flat bottom vans or nikes & that wont be changing either... I never considered that style mature by any means since u see it on all ages out in this area... a fresh & clean logoless white tee was always the coolest thing to wear, my friends & i would all stock up at the local discount clothing store that literally only sold dickies & plain blank tees & we were all so happy walking out of the store feeling like champions waiting for the bus to arrive, literally some of the best times as a kid in 9th & 10th grade were those shopping trips with my friends, just a fresh new outfit for $20 bux total, 3 tees & a pair of dickies, feeling on top of the world 😂, haven't thought about that stuff in a long time, thanks for reminding me...

Thank you for your content! I appreciate a woman’s perspective on how to dress my age. I turned 50 last year and finally ended a toxic 8 year relationship and relocated to my dream city with my company. I took the opportunity to purge stuff that looks like my son would wear or no longer fit due to weight loss from all of the stress. I went down to maybe 6 shirts and 4 pairs of pants that fit well and a few sweaters that I can rotate depending on what accent color I want to coordinate with the outfit. I looked at well dressed men around me and took cues from their style and found items I already owned that I could throw in but I also bought a few new pieces such as a nice pair of dress casual shoes that I can pair with either pants or the right jeans to give myself options. Now just need to take my new look and get out there and meet some new people! 😊 Thanks Courtney!

The jacket that shares the same sewing pattern as a denim jacket is traditionally called a duck coat, or a sport coat, after hunter's attire. For bros out there looking for one try and find one with the slanted pockets like a hoodie pouch because it'll extend the utility outta the jacket. Very classic, very much versatile. All good picks from Courtney.

So in a nutshell: Don't wear any colours that you can't find in a cappuccino. I wouldn't call her advice terrible. I think its simple and good advice for men that don't care what they are wearing but still want to appear like they care to attract females. However, you will definitely end up looking like the majority of men between 20 and 35 because most of them are wearing exactly what she has been describing as a good style for men. I personally think that adult men can absolutely pull of bolder colours as well. You just have to be confident and secure about it.

I'd love to see a casual vid for people that live in hot climates, focusing on short sleeve shirts, shorts & shoes that go well with them. While I own a lot of tasteful jackets, button downs, etc, there's only a small window for that stuff for people that live in SoCal, PHX, TX, FL, etc. Loafers continuously get touted, yet they are pretty impractical in the summer as they are usually suede/leather, are not a good for rainy days or wet climates, and also not a good choice in the winter as they tend to have very slick bottoms and expose the ankles. Really only time they can be worn is in specific instances like around a cruise ship where room to restaurant is climate controlled and indoors. While I totally agree that Hey Dude's have a white trash aspect to them, there are similar moc-toe slip ons by other manufacturers like the Nunn Bush Brewski that have an elevated appearance due to the leather accents.

Then I can see a question or two being raised.

Hey Courtney! This is your first video I've watched. As single man in his late 20's who spent the last year going through a lot of personal growth and who is still in the process of reinventing himself, I definitely find this video to be helpful as a starting point, but I have some questions. Maybe you already have some other videos you could point me to, or maybe they could be ideas for future videos of yours. As someone who isn't confident in their personal sense of fashion and has family members (parents, siblings, etc.) who tend to dress very "loud", including a love for some of the more juvenile styles you mention in this video, I would like to be as confident as possible in my understanding of how this all works before I go making a bunch of purchases and potentially looking goofy due to lack of innate sense. I will likely face some degree of heat/pressure from family regardless, so I at least want to get it right in the transition to make it as painless as possible. As helpful as it is, I think this video makes a few key assumptions that a man has knowledge of the most basic of basics, and I'm not sure I have those. I don't know where the line is drawn with color matching, for example: I tend to wear very similar colors when I dress myself currently. In the outfit at 9:26 I perceive that as three different colors (medium brown, off-white, and olive). Although it intuitively makes sense to me actually seeing it on the model, I probably wouldn't have tried that myself for fear of the green of the jeans and the brown of the jacket clashing, and I wouldn't know what colors would work for the shoes with this outfit (though I would assume brown). I've seen even further departures in other male fashion images (e.g. a lighter grey jacket over a black base) that my current understanding tells me would clash, but apparently doesn't. How far is too far? What works and what doesn't with color combos? Other things like knowing which jeans cuts "look best" on my body type aren't something I just know, and my family currently hates loafers. It seems like this video assumes I'll know which ones are the best to buy, but I don't. Not only have I not been educated to do that, but I might even be in a hostile environment for outside help. I want to dress for me and would like to look mature to others in public rather than simply catering to my family's preferences, but at the moment I'm lacking knowledge in the most basic of skills and do not know how to obtain them aside from sources like you. I apologize for the wall of text-- and truly thank you if you read all that-- but any videos you could make or direct me to that would go even more basic and help with foundational skills like this would be greatly appreciated. For now I will sub in the hopes you will continue to produce content along these lines going forward.

This is exactly what i was looking for! I'm turning 30 this year and want to change my wardrobe a bit, get rid of the more younger immature things and take on a new improved look. Thank you!

I don't know what your fitness level is, but being fit and looking healthy is more important than the clothes you wear. When you're fit and healthy and have a good posture, all clothes will look good on you. No one cares about "looking immature", that's an illusion, changing your wardrobe will not change who you are and how you feel. Once you get in shape, visit your local tailor and have them modify your clothes to fit you, old clothes, new clothes , it doesn't matter. Fit is more important than brand, and you won't find clothes that just fit you when you buy them, so you end up not buying something you like, because it doesn't fit you, so you'll spend more money on things you don't like. Help yourself by getting in shape, and help the local economy, visit your friendly neighborhood tailor, and you will thank yourself.

@@scratchy996 I do agree with a lot of that, been meaning to set a membership up with my old gym for a bit, will try that today. But with that being said you don't understand I'm so tired of a lot of these clothes that I've had since high school/college. And they're all black and gray, I actually want color, a bit of art, something pleasant on the eyes you know

going through my T-shirt collection, I have way way too many graphic T-shirts. I'm in my 40s now, so I need to think about these things more. For casual wear around the house, I prefer wearing a T-shirt with one of those open hoodies that you can zip up if you want, but I prefer them open and sweatpants. Why sweatpants you ask? they are easy to get in to and out of as a big man (big the wrong way mind you). I also wear them when I go out with my friends because they look kinda casual. When I go out elsewhere though is where the problem is. I recently bought myself shirts and a couple of plain white T-shirts from my friend's clothing store as well as 2 pairs of Denim dress pants (Black and Gray). so all this goes really well together, so I kind of have an outfit to wear when I go out somewhere fancy. I'm really not a James Bond suit style type of guy, I hate wearing that stuff, I wish I loved it, but I just can't. it's the shirt honestly, so suit and tie is not for me so this was a really good alternative. but what about in between fancy and really casual? I'm missing something. I'm really not a big fan of jeans anymore. tight jeans feel like a straitjacket for my legs, if you know what I mean. they feel trapped. I have a couple of jeans that fit me really well though and I wear those when I go out, but this is the part I want to change up a bit. I also have open sweaters with a zipper that I really love wearing on top of my Ts. As for shoes, I got a pair of leather shoes I wear daily now because they are the only pair that fit me. I have 2 pairs of Converse as well, which I usually use for casual wear but they don't always fit me because I have this water problem sometimes where my foot swells up and it's simply too big for those shoes. I really need to buy a new pair of shoes next I think. my biggest shue problem is that I can't tie my own shoes really well because of my handicap or I would absolutely buy myself those boots your husband wears. alas, I can't, it needs to be shoes I can get into using a shue horn or in my case: my fingers haha.

I subconsciously started wearing solid colour teas and hoodies when I got into my late twenties and I’m now in my early 30s. I was always a shirt and loafers/brogue shoe person when dressing fancy or some smart simple trainers but boots have never been my thing until I caught myself randomly liking some DR Martens. Not the usual high platform ones but some casual ones that surprised me. In general I believe dressing well is about wearing the best fitted/tailored clothes. Keep it simple and then you can mix and match the colours. Once you have that you just need the right shoes to match and you’re good 99% of the time.

Gentlemen, just wear you want, because as long as you're actually wearing clothes, you'll be more covered up in public than the average woman is.

I have to admit I'd rather be alone than follow such advice, as fine as it is. Thing is I'm French so the rules are a bit different here and I feel like I'd only attract shallow women and I've had my fill of those. Tshirt and jeans will be enough, what feels comfortable. Keeping it simple and minimalist.

I'd say you "should" dress according not just to your age but also body type and other features. In my case for example, I'm 38, in theory I should dress more casual like a young adult in the 40s, but I'm just 165cm tall, I used to be VERY fit until I was 30--31 and still keep a lean/fit body, and thanks to genetics and a healthy lifestyle I've always looked easily 6 years younger than I am. The same happened to my mom (people though she was underage when she married, and she was 20) and I had a very hard time with women up until being 26-27 and above because I looked "too young" and "like a teen" to most of them, like "not manly enough". Think of people like Michael J Fox or Elijah Wood. Now, despite being 38, people always think I'm around 30 and I mostly wear jeans (good slim fit) with hoodies (some with graphics, some without) or white shirt, and sneakers (some colorful, some not), usually matching my hoodie with the sneakers. I wouldn't be able to pull it off if I looked older, and I know it's going to look a bit weird when I'm 45 or something like that, but having the heigh of a teenager, the bodytype of a teenager, and facial features of a 30 years old intern, I can get away looking good and "appropriate to my age" with looks more adequate for a young college graduate in his mid-late 20s. Sometimes I've had to wear a suit for work and I've been told it looked "strange of me" precisely because my physique gave the impression of a teen in Prom Night instead of a "man wearing a suit", because I've been both lucky and unlucky with my "Michael J Fox perpetual teeange" kind of looks.

I stopped wearing denim age 58. I just rotate chino's now. Light for summer. Dark for winter. My shoes are Loake Broagues and outdoor walking shoes for winter and tassle loafers and green suede Addidas for summer. Simple.
