coffered ceiling

Today I’m building a coffered ceiling in my family room. This is a medium to hard diy project if you have never done this type of carpentry work before, however with my guidance and your hard work, you can do this. This is a major home improvement. Enjoy the video!

how did you handle a situation as the drywall not being flat on the wall near the top?

Watch my “box beam ceiling” video, I explain and show exactly how to handle that. I was pretty lucky on this one because the walls were almost perfect and at the top, even if they were out a little, the crown molding covered it all.

Not sure if you just ca glued the inside crown molding corners. But stapling them with upholstery stapler is a nice way.. back stitching

Yes I have seen that done and it is a great technique but I don’t have a pneumatic upholstery stapler, only a narrow crown stapler and that just shoots the staple right through it

If the ceiling is not flat and you cut all strapping blocks the same , wouldn’t the bottom board be wavy?

Pay attention to why I use a spacer block to create a reveal with bottom and the side boards. If the reveal is even all the way across, it will eliminate any look of a wave. That is also why you don’t put the side boards up against the ceiling either. I’m pretty sure I explained it in the video. Also, if your ceiling is so out of flat, you can either shim the nailer boards or mud the ceiling.

How tall are your ceilings? I have 9 foot ceilings and wonder if i should do 1x6 beams like you and whether an 8 inch hang would be too much. What do you think?

This is a 9.5 foot ceiling. You can always make the box beams smaller but make sure you take that into account when you choose a crown molding.

Looks terrible, absolutely beautiful job. Have you considered cutting the crown moulding on the flat using bisecting angle instead of holding it at that angle?

I don’t cut on the flat because it’s much slower. Too much movement of the saw having to bevel it each way and swing it side to side every time you have to make a cut. Nested position I’m showing here is the fastest and easiest way.

Nice job. What are the box sizes or the cell sizes? What’s the crown size?

The crown is 4 & 5/8”. The box sizes are roughly 65” on the outer sides and the middles are about 48”. This was due to the positioning of the A/C vents and pot lights. Those can be moved and all the boxes can be made equal sizes if desired. I like the variation and chose not to move the vents.

Anthony, to attach the primed pine on the bottom and sides, did you use a brad nailer? If so, what gauge was it? Sorry, for the questions. I'm working on my ceiling and have this paranoia about things falling down.

18 gauge brad nails, 2” long. Don’t worry, nothing will fall as long as you attached the strapping to the ceiling correctly. Also note that once to attach the side boards, that is what really locks everything in place. You will have nails going upwards and then sideways. If you are that worried, you can use a 16 gauge finish nailer, the nails are much thicker and have more of a head on them.

Awesome job! Did you consider 8 inches coffered width as your room is pretty big? Also would it be easier to nail/screw using 2x6 stud to build the top pieces?

With the projection of the crown molding and the width of the box beams, the total width is almost 15 inches. If I made the box beams 8”, the overall with the crown projection would be too wide

Looks great. Is that just a typical 8' ceiling? Considered doing some coffer in our house but was afraid it would make the ceiling feel too low if we did ours which is 8'. Gonna be keeping an eye on you. You do nice work 👏

Thanks. I continued the reveal for the transition for a balanced look. I love the miter saw extension wings and wish I could link it in the description but Amazon doesn’t sell it anymore for some reason.

These ceilings are just over 10 feet. 6 inches down was the perfect depth. It doesn’t make the room feel smaller at all. My best advice to you is to make a model of it(actual size you want) like I showed in the beginning of the video and hold it up on the ceiling. Have someone look at it and then have them hold it up there for you to see. This will give you a much better visual of whether or not you want to go a little shorter. Remember, if you’ve never done this before and you think you may not get all the joints perfect and all your spacing right and square, the closer down you come to someone’s line of sight, the mistakes will be much more visible.
