These are actually pretty good fero rods. Though the handle sometimes comes off, a little glue will fix that if it does. I almost always use the spine of a closed pocket knife to strike with, but I do keep one of those that came with a rod. Don't use the toothy part though, use a flat area, any flat area of the striker will work better than the jagged part. I also only use the last 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the rod, otherwise the rod will get worn thin in the middle and after a short while will break in the middle. Some people say to hold the striker and draw the rod back to keep from hitting and scattering the tinder. I put the end of the rod firmly down on something solid with the tinder under the rod tip and strike down onto the tinder from 1/2 to 3/4 inch up. Always works for me and I get full use of all the fero rod.

Honestly, I just bought one of these, there were 2 left in the store, one was already opened so I decided to try it out, threw sparks all over the place (don't worry, nothing caught on fire). After seeing that I didn't hesitate to buy the other one. I have to agree with other comments, seems to be operator error.

hi, thanks for the reviews. What "non-expensive" (under 10 bucks) striker would you recommend?

l used this started before. It usually works better if I hold the knife stationary and pull the striker across the back towards me. Gets a ton of sparks, at least for me anyways. cheers!

For strikers that I have reviewed, I would say this one is actually the most bang for your buck. It should last a long time, and I believe they can be had for under ten bucks. The colemans Striker, is of slightly less quality and durability. Not always..... But for this striker type it appears true.

What is that bigger knife you have called? I am guessing it is like the 7 dollar one you reviewed that came with the firesteel? Thanks

Not a bad idea at all. maybe a small holster for the pair and it would be full proof!

If you use a smaller knife it is better or like a pocket knife it is harder to create sparks with a large knife like the one u used

Yes. I don't have an altoids tin handy, but put the dollar bill on the videos so you can have a size perspective and measurement. I hope that answers your question, Thanks for viewing and commenting!

I have several of these they are quite a bit cheaper then the Light My Fire or Swedish ones, they are thicker and longer and for a buck or 2 on sale, I have several. I uses the jimping or just forward to strike. ONE THING, if there is a coating on the blade, it will act very poorly. Bare metal is really essential. With bare metal and decent effort it will throw a HELL of alot of sparks. I can't see how you were having such a difficult time iwth it other then your knife is painted, and it did not appear you were putting much effort into it.

Yeah ... There is no problem with the rod. ... It is operator error.
@csh6220
@csh6220 6 жыл бұрын
The rod works fine, the striker sucks. A piece of glass will work, and a 90 degree spine on a knife with no coating will outperform the striker that comes with the rod. As for technique, you need more speed and maybe more pressure. Practice makes perfect.

Is that SZCO knife off Amazon that comes with the plastic sheath? It kinda looks like it. If so is it worth it for the price? How is the handle? Is the blade firm and strong like my d...?

if that knife didn't have a sharp spine, it wont throw a spark,... the knife is also coated so it threw a weak spark. The striker that comes with the rod... or your own dedicated striker is actually preferable. Unless your in a survival situation and have no other way I wouldn't be wearing down the spine on knife. It just isn't practical. If you know how to use the tool effectively it does just fine

If you held the rod up off the table you'd be able to strike in a smoother motion, thus creating more sparks. The way you're doing it, you have no throw.....kind of irritating to watch.

I literally had to sign in just to give a dislike (which I seldom do). You, Sir, do not know much about how to use a ferro rod. I don't know where to begin but maybe you can search around KZbin for other videos regarding how to use this. The one you are using is one of the best rods out there and one should be able to make fire within 5 seconds

I bought one of these and after spending (no, wasting) 15 minutes fooling with it I NEVER got it to work -- this thing is a piece of JUNK. You'll start a fire faster rubbing two ice cubes together.

Well that was a painful video to watch. When it comes to your review, it has nothing to do with the product that you're using, it's the operator that is using it. Video's like this are annoying because the person doesn't use the product according to directions and then blames the product for not working. No, it's the user that's the problem. These fint strikers are very easy to use, as long that you take the black coating off when you first get it.
