Cohab is a complex and nuanced topic, but because it’s so controversial and even blacklisted on numerous online forums and groups, it’s almost impossible to discuss and learn about The scientific literature shows they can live in groups in the wild and their brains undergo change when exposed to conspecifics, but overall there isn’t enough data to form a definitive conclusion on cohab, so it’s up to us, the keepers, to experiment, observe, and share our own experiences to gain a better understanding of leopard geckos and husbandry

I just had to separate my 2 adult females. They had been in their own space but thought it would be good to put them back into a larger tank. Witnessed lots of nipping and pushing anytime one would see the other. So had to split them up again. I think you're spot on that she got used to having her own space and wasn't willing to go back to sharing. Great video!

@@user-lz5yv6vj2u well it slowly because of the risk of keeping them together. They could be fine depends g on the gecko and enclosure type, space etc. But the reason people say not to cohabitate them is because of the chance. Even if it's a 10% chance they fight or kill it's better to not try that chance in the first place.

This was very helpful :) I've had my best luck breeding in trios of 1:2. I keep them together in 20 gallon long aquariums that have been turned on their sides, with a conversion kit door that is situated horizontally. I put coco core on the bottom, and three moist nest boxes. I also separate the nest boxes with a little faux greenery, so there are places to hide. Doing this method, I've not had a problem with territoriality or aggression - but there's always a chance. This year, when I decided to try to just take males into female boxes, my very first try has ended up with the female being pretty significantly injured. :( Could be a fluke, could be it's just that pair, but - it makes me wonder! Just goes to show, that not everything is going to work for everybody OR every gecko. Thank you for doing this video!

The problem I have with group breeding is you no longer can track the specific geckos any longer. Some breeders are also not putting the exact same lineage together which then muddies the genetics of the hobby because they don't truly know who is the mother of any eggs laid in that group. Even using pure groupings you still can't track the females if something crazy pops out. The animals care should be 100% priority
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations Жыл бұрын
Yes, very very good points. As far as tracking, one tip I can give is if someone really wants to track potential new genes or interesting patterns popping up from a specific female, they could document which group specifically each baby came from, I used to do that so if something pops up at least you know its 1 of the 3 females in that group plus the male that created the oddity. But I totally understand why someone wouldn't prefer this style of breeding, it just works really well for larger operations if someone is going down that road.

I am currently keeping 2 females, 1 male together in a 70 gal with a PetCube camera to study their behavior. I’m more worried about the girls being mean, than my male since he’s an AFG his personality is exceptionally laid back and sweet. So far I’ve seen him scoot over to make room near the heat source to let one of the females in on it. He’s done that with both of them though. Thankfully 3 out of 4 of my geckos are fairly laid back. But my AFG is the most laid back and my absolute favorite ever. I’m obsessed with him. So I really want to keep a close eye on them.

From my own personal experience of keeping Leopard Geckos for 5 years. Males WILL fight. In fact much to my cost, even if your hand smells of another male the one you let near your hand WILL bite it quite aggressively. I forgot to wash my hands before picking up one of my males having held one of his sons. He immediately latched onto my hand biting deep into my flesh and WOULD NOT LET GO. Very painful and drew blood. Fortunately it was on a thicker area on the side of my hand. Had He bitten into the webbed areas between my fingers He would have gone through. Up to that point non of my collection have ever bitten me. I have not made that mistake again. Also when its breeding season I have had my males trying to mate with my hand after holding a female. Very embarrassing lol. I have also had one incident where a temporary set up of one vivarium divided with mesh had a male on either side while moving their homes to a new rack. Within minutes they were hell bent on getting through the mesh to reach each other. Young males up to the point where they start to become sexually mature cohabit perfectly fine together in a mixed group 99.9% of the time. (ALL from the same Mum and Dad). I have had two that were aggressive from hatch day but calmed down after they reached 2yrs old. I do have one exceptional exception. I have a male who I believed was a female. He was often in the company of his male siblings. I did not see him make an attempt to mate or have any aggressive interaction with his male siblings. However early one morning before the lights came on I discovered him getting jiggy with a female cohabitee 😮 much to my surprise. He had to be renamed from Jessica to Jesse James. He is the most placid and friendly little soul. My very first hatchling and My smallest male too. His younger Brothers are all bigger than him. BUT He is definitely a boy who hid it VERY well. His hemipene bulges are almost invisible. ALL the girls love him lol. I also have a family group. This happened by accident NOT design. One of my females laid 3 eggs VERY late after the season ended unknown to me. They were hidden somewhere in the vivarium in a nook out of sight and hatched out successfully. I did not know they were there until the vivarium camera caught them climbing around the vivarium around 2 to 3am. They remained freely in with the parents despite me trying to catch them. As they grew I would see them laying side by side with their Parents. The Dad was very protective towards them. If I opened the doors to feed or clean the water bowls etc He would come forward and position himself between me and them. Always watching over them. Not aggressive toward me but watchful. The biggest baby grew up almost to the same size as Dad and I have just removed Him as Dad had decided it was time His Son needed to "leave the nest". The other 2 are still smaller but growing and still watched over. It was an interesting experience seeing how they all lived quite happily together and the Father was very Paternal. Observing their behavior was quite an informative experience. It was not a situation I would have created by design as I had been led to believe from all the information available that the babies were at risk. Possibly I was just lucky and the fact that they all came from the same family had a big influence on the situation. Also interestingly I have 3 males that the females prefer the company of above any other. Those males are the most friendly and most eager to be handled of my collection. All are handle able even the two who are most aggressive and skittish have started to mellow as they have aged.

What about a male and female around the same size in a 4x2x2? i’ve heard mostly negative things and I was wondering if anyone has ever done that
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations Жыл бұрын
Sophie has kept a male and female in that size enclosure well. Maybe listen to our podcast with her listed in this video in the top right corner. I believe you should be ok, however, males will always chase females around to breed even if the females don't want to breed. Unless the male is lazy, which can happen, but if he's a good breeder he'll keep bugging her to breed even if she doesn't want to and that could stress her out and cause her to lose weight or in the worst-case die over time. I'm talking extremes here, but possibilities :)

I have to make geckos in a very large enclosure they have been together since birth and are at least 7 months old. They have 2 different hides and eat together every other day and they have not shown each other any aggression unless going for food and accidental nipping occurred. Imo adequate spacing and enough places to bide determines how well geckos do together. I’d never have more than 2 together. His are probably aggressive due to lack of space in those plastic bins

RedLine shipping company uses fed ex as a delivery service. Second time in a month my live animals are at risk, due to delays. I'm so upset that my gecko is going through such a traumatic situation. None should and 24 hrs should mean just that.

For sure, I totally understand. Unfortunately, since COVID Fed Ex just hasn't been quite as reliable as before. This is however a nationwide shipping issue, and fed ex still does offer the most reliable standards we can get in reptile shipping that I'm aware of. Thankfully I haven't had any delays recently but there are 1000s of packages that go out each week, and unfortunately, some people just get unlucky and are the ones that experience the delays that do happen :( But I hope for a better experience for you moving forward, maybe ill do a video on the different shipping options but fed ex is still the most reliable of the options despite the apparent issues over the last 2 years compared to the other options :(

I feel like there aren't any females in the building then multiple males together might theoretically be fine. No ladies to fight over? Bromance time! (This is what is seen in feral/wild horses at least. The males live in groups together until they hit maturity, then they leave the bromance (batchelor herd.) Later, when a stallion gets ousted from his band of mares as an old guy he'll often join a batchelor herd and become a role model for the young studs who've been chased out of their natal herds by their dads.
