they were progressive from their first album. their early singles had more of a pop sound to them because thats what was chosen for "mass appeal" by the record label.

Naw they were a post hardcore band that got the progressive label put on them by Rush fans then they spent the rest of their career trying to live up to that label.

The abrupt ending is actually it going straight into the next song Rise, Nianaisha (Cut The Cord), another banger on this album, followed up by the 8 minute rock operatic epic that is Window of The Waking Mind. If you have parenting feelings, it hits hard.
