se1z Yes, Moog and Marty fucked up by not using stock 86 tires which are the same shitty tires that Toyota puts on their Prius for little grip to get better MPG.
@garf1179 жыл бұрын
se1z Try not to look at it as stock tyres vs upgraded tyres but a car that favors suspension over a car that favors tyre. If you want to see the biggest difference in what the two can do then you find as big a gap as possible. Thats why they didnt buy cheap $400 coilover they went with BC's which run around 1,000 US dollars. This way you see if a car is faster when it reaches the limitation of the tires or the suspension first.

Always upgrade in this order; -tires (maybe wheels too) -brakes and/or suspension depending on how good the OEM brakes are -weight reduction (semi optional but recommended) -power This is the right order. And the safe way to do it. Way to many people go power and suspension but ignore brakes and tires. In the end, tires are everything. Everything you do is translated to through the tires. You can mod all you want and if the tires are crap, it wont matter.

Glad the end result was buy both. The reason being is that it's very hard to compare coilovers to tires. They are both key components in a vehicles handling however, they are different ingredients to the overall recipe. If you have for instance an R compound or slick tire, it will have more overall grip because of the softer compound but will in turn demand more shock than what is available through a factory valved shock. So it is vital that you to have a suspension that can handle the compound you are throwing at it. That being said, it is always better to have better shocks than tires as you aren't asking more from the shocks than what is available and a nice set of shocks will make your "lesser" tires work more efficiently and give you more out of them then what a lesser or factory shock would.

Great video. You guys should do a performance comparison on the track between small wheels (14" - 15") and big ones (17"+) using the same tire on a low horsepower car like a Miata. Or even wheels of the same size but different weights. People have argued about it for so long. It would be nice to see the difference. My friends and I are building a race car 1999 318is. They want to go with 8 kilo 16s and i want 5 kilo 15s. There argument is that the extra traction will make up for the loss in acceleration. Please bust this myth!
@norwester70189 жыл бұрын
+Noah Hambayi Go 15's with a section width (tire) as close as you can to the 16" tire they want. If you can split the difference in weight (or stay closer to the 15's overall weight), the smaller diameter, reduced rotational mass and lower COG will ALL be a benefit. Without knowing the specs of the two wheel and tire combos it's hard to say definitively, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that the 16's won't give all that much more grip and the acceleration loss coming out of turns can cost you a LOT of time in a track environment...FWIW I've been building VW's and a few other random makes/models for track/Rally use for many many moons.
@lejink9 жыл бұрын
Haven't watched the video yet, but I'm going to throw a guess out that tires are going to make more of a difference than coilovers will.. The prius tires aren't so great, so the grip level isn't high enough to take advantage of a stiffer suspension

riiskay Ne1ld0 This is what MCM had to say about that "Good question and there's a couple of reasons: 1) If the video was for Australian audiences only it would make sense but the 86 comes with a variety of different tyre options for different territories so a 'standard' test would not be standardised for other regions, and most of our audience is actually overseas. 2) Most people in the automotive blogosphere already know what tyres come on the 86/Prius in Australia (there's so many arguments about them and online rantings from unhappy owners already) and we don't really want to get into a brand debate on screen because it's not the point of the video to simply compare tyres (We've done that already which you can see on our channel) 3) For anyone with a car that's NOT an 86 (99.5% of the people watching), the results are more relevant because it's comparing items that are commonly available for any car no matter how new or old it is." Also the blue one didn't have the stock wheels or tires in the first place.

honestly guys. im kinda disappointed in this test. i love you guys and your videos are mad but you guys really missed out on how to do this test where it made sense. firstly. those bridgestone's are NOT mad sticky track day tires. not even close. Toyo PROXES R1R are a good example, or Nitto NT05's probably have twice the grip of those bridgestones. There are many others from Pilot Sport Cup 2's to others. The only thing those Bridgestone are good at is low road noise and wet grip. they're a great street tire. dont get me wrong. But those are not track tires. Now on the coilover car. I'm ok with BC coils. But you should have used the same stock tire. period. Also you should have used to stock rims. They're aluminum and super light. that would have told us something. nobody is running an fr-s with those wheels. nobody. cept maybe you guys. everyone else, is most likely on stock wheel for this test to make any sense. can you do this test again, except, maybe with better conditions like.... my suggestions?

Tyres can be very personal. I buy nothing but Vredestein. Why? They rarely win tests unlike f.e. Michelin, but years ago I've spun out 2 times with no warning on Michelin tyres and had one blow out on me. I had a company car as well back then, on which I had Pirelli, Michelin and Vredestein, the latter pleasantly surprising me, so I tried them on my own car. Many different types of Vredestein tyres on many different cars later, with other brands in between that came on those cars (Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Uniroyal, Kleber...), and I'm simply locked in the brand more and more, some were better than others, but never a disappointment and never even close to dangerous. Also I'm pretty sure they're sponsored by Bridgestone, considering they've used them on many projects and they avoid mentioning other brand names, just like the the Castrol oils, Halltech ecu's, AMauto...

Product placement features heavily in this sort of thing, which is OK, but the target audience here is about ~17yrs old, and the last thing anyone wants is lots of kids banging into each other on cold RSpecs. On the street. Maybe not on this dinky track, but you need to dry sump (Subaru boxers) if you track R Specs in anger, because of oil scavenging across the heads. At full song, one head runs dry mid corner, and it detonates on exit. Until you fix this, Subarus are great fun, but risky choice for seriously fettled track times. Particularly in a loan car.. MCM must invest significant effort into the-clay-they-can-get. Bridgestone will sell plenty of tyres, to people who need them, and the guys can eventually buy a restaurant, which is fine. Good luck to them!

bridgestones are great track tires for one. two are you gonna fork up the 800 to 1000 dollars those tires cost?

I think those bleeped tyres' brand is A-Star. I think. Edit: I have recently put some RE003s on my FIAT. Not only is the grip substantially improved over the previous tyres (Yokohama C-Drives that were I think maybe 60000-80000kms old, so that makes sense), but, because the profile had to be increased, the ride's actually gotten better. Very happy: I think I'll get them again.

Mighty Car Mods Definitely enjoyed the video. Drove an old friends 86 (AKA the FR-S here in the States) and enjoyed it. Been to the track in a beater Honda Accord and will agree that suspension is a must. But then again, the bushings in my Accord were trashed. Keep up the awesome videos!

I love this show but you know what I would like to see how different types of tires react to the track. You know like all season all weather but mostly if you could get away with using the softer winter tires and get similair results as you would with performance tires
@wowtek4219 жыл бұрын
Very nice! Would've been nice to see the car stock run the course, and coilovers with stock tires (as the person said they wanted better tires or coilovers, so naturally you wouldn't change the tires as well). Also, would've been awesome to see a run with the coilover setup better, as opposed to the similar setup to stock. End result is the same though, just buy both lol
@AlexanderKrivacsSchrder9 жыл бұрын
For the best comparison, you should've done lap times with a completely stock car as well. We don't really know how the upgrades compare to stock, because every car had something changed.
@ryank53739 жыл бұрын
It would have been interesting to see a true control on this test. I would be very interested to see what stock suspension and stockish tires would be capable of providing. The 2.5sec improvement was over the coilover car...
@BensCoffeeRants5 жыл бұрын
I think the improvement really depends on what you need more. I imagine this car, already has decent a decent suspension set up. So you're better off getting good tires first if on a limited budget.
@robgreenwood69399 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that the driver is also learning the track every time he goes round and finding a faster line each time. results as expected if he did all laps in the same car.
@mig62209 жыл бұрын
When coil overs are installed, they ride high until they settle. Then, camber adjustment should be done.. I would love to see how this affects the track times versus just installed..!
@sachideshmane50889 жыл бұрын
The problem with tyres is that they wear out after a few track days. Suspension, on the other hand, is a more long-term upgrade that will hopefully last you for many years. This is one reason I would choose suspension over tyres, despite the slower lap times.
@erty959 жыл бұрын
Personally over the long haul I would invest in the coilovers. Yes the tires did see a time difference but how many runs will you get out of them? I would invest in coilovers, get used to those and tune them then invest on tires.
@9ninetyfour49 жыл бұрын
Everybody's discussing the test and the driver and whatever. But the first thing when making a car faster and especially race-ready is the tyres. The tyres are the only parts keeping your car on track and the suspension "only" tries to keep the tyres on the floor as good as possible. Therefore the suspension supports the tyre's work which also means you have to change tyres at first so the suspension can support them properly. And yes as we see here the stock suspension will come to its limits with good tyres and it is always a good investion to buy upgraded suspensions but always go for good tyres first if you're building a tracktool ;)
@JerryPena9 жыл бұрын
You should of put the original tyres on the orange car to see how it did stock as well..

Such a great test! This is mad! Well done on choosing the same rims for both cars
@hotrodsather9 жыл бұрын
That is pry because new suspensions systems are already so advanced and high performing that you really can't see the benefits of an upgrade on a stock drive train. Tires on the other hand have such a wide range of performance.

It's actually better if you tune the suspension while using cheap tyres as opposed to tuning it while using better tyres like the RE-101. Some tuning companies in japan like Mine's or Boss have been tuning their suspension like that recently. Once you dialed up the stroke and rebound and getting the optimum performance from the cheap tires then suddenly switch to better tires then the car will handle slightly better.

it'd be interesting to see what good tires and a set of KYB gas charged shocks would do for the stock. granted I'm talking old school and simple here. back when, KYB designed for the car was a big upgrade for corner handling without spending a huge wad of cash. they do have a downside, hard use on rougher pavement does warm them up making them stiffer, not so much on a decent road/track. they might be worth a look at even today.
@superjervis9 жыл бұрын
The reason the tire had a bigger impact was because the suspension from the BRZ was decent to start with,if it had been a more 'commercial' vehicle the suspension would have made a bigger difference.
@K1LL3RD1M39 жыл бұрын
So in Canada that car is called a scion frs and suby basically has the same model called the brz. The scion uses the suby engine. I guess they change the name of cars around the world for some reason
@mdaniel12109 жыл бұрын
good video, but I'm curious... if the premise was to find out which upgrade is better from stock, why were super cheap tires put on the coilover car? shouldn't it have been tested with OEM issued tires?

Good video. Yeah, remember hearing some years ago that an extra 50bhp might get an F1 car about 0.3 seconds a lap; a better tyre could produce 3-4 seconds a lap. (Bit boring but true! Tyres help acceleration, braking AND cornering.)

I'm curious what the crappy tyres would have been like without the suspension changes - ie did the suspension changes make *any* difference at all to a stock car.

@ROGUESPIRIT_9 жыл бұрын
you should have done a control test for both, then installed the tyres on one and the coils on the other and done another test. Subtract the second time from the first and the one with the bigger number is better!
@gregb02399 жыл бұрын
Since he was asking about better tires or coilovers, wouldn't the more accurate test have been to keep the stock tires on the one with the coilovers, since that's what he would have had?

Thank you for the explanation on coil overs. However, I don't have the funds to buy it right now. At the moment I have STOCK 2017 Toyota 86 (frs) . I do want LESS tail slide and MORE grip , however, I do have a mortgage and spending thousands of dollars on a couple of components is not doable at this time for me. Good coilovers cost thousands and I'm not ready to make big modification right now. Another thing is , I don't know too much about offset, inset, spacers , etc. My question is, if I just changed the stock tires and go with better tires like the Michilin PSS or Yokahama , etc. and keep the new tires same size as stock will i see better grip on this car ? I just want to get rid of some of the "tail happy" slide. Thank you and looking forward to your reply .

Michelin PS4S. Basically the road version of the PSS. Better treadwear than the PSS (300), less noise but negligible difference in performance. Put them on your rears at least and you will see a dramatic improvement. These things seem to defy the laws of physics! These along with a set of lowering springs and you're good to go. As with most things, don't just take my word for it, check the widely available reviews. Still to see a bad one yet.
