You are right in the way that p/s fluid is important on these, but the delay and smoothness is just a feeling. The steering wheel is connected to the rack, so nothing can change the phase of the steering wheel to the rack except if you have a torn coupler. But yeah p/s fluid change is a must and the pump and rack will be happier (and start to leak out also, but ..)

The steering ratio remains the same regardless if you have good fluid, bad fluid or no fluid at all. You probably had air pockets in your system, which made the steering effort inconsistent, hence the sensation that it now steers quicker. However, you're right about keeping the fluid nice and clean. It's a must!

@stephen3164
@stephen3164 5 жыл бұрын
I think there's more you can do with suspension. Upgrade the sways and end links. Put the rear on a softer setting to reduce oversteer. You might also consider adding some negative camber to the fronts, as the tire really is leaning past its contact point under hard cornering. Your tow in/out settings will assist in either initial turn in or stability - depending on how you set it up. When it comes down to it, no matter what mod you do to your suspension or engine, the only part of the car actually touching the road is your tires - which is why many people start there.

Please if you install a LSD try to get a Clutch Type LSD ( Like a Drexler or a Kaaz ) Its the best you can do. And If you get a Torsen LSD take a Wavetrac it works even with a tire in the Air. A Quaife cant do this. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 my friends!
@kurtphillips124
@kurtphillips124 5 жыл бұрын
Why is the clutch type dynamically preferred over a torsen style diff?
@absolutepressur
@absolutepressur 5 жыл бұрын
And torsen diffs bias torque to the slower wheel, which means you get a yaw moment opposite of what you want on both corner entry and exit. Clutch diff is the way to go. No biasing.
@dpro1995
@dpro1995 5 жыл бұрын
A clutch type forces the outer wheel to cope with more torque as the inside wheel loses grip. So what is your point?
@raveutcars
@raveutcars 5 жыл бұрын
torsen will still spin one wheel especially if kerb hopping or too eager with the throttle on corner exit. can be mitigated with suspension setup but if you are running a stiff rear end with large anti roll bars then becomes more apparent. Even on FWD cars that typically run very stiff rear ends meaning proportionally less % weight transfer on the front axel the inside wheel still spins. My quiafe powered car is fine for the road and still spins the inside wheel on roundabouts if you are a yobbo but its plate diff every time on the track.

As low as possible isn't necessarily the best case. I'd think you'd want as low as possible while still having enough suspension travel for whatever surface and speeds you're using. Like he said you don't wanna run into the bump stops.

@jaspereerdekens3102 5 жыл бұрын
Do you then know why it is that with too stiff of a spring you have inconsistent grip? (1:40)
@louischim2000
@louischim2000 5 жыл бұрын
Jasper Eerdekens 1:40 he's referring when a tire meets a bump or road imperfections. If your springs are too stiff, it can't compress. Which means the springs will not react to the road imperfections. Thus the tires will lose contact with the ground.

I think there is a bit of wishful thinking here, like when your car feels faster after you just waxed it, because 0.26 seconds isn't great value for >£1500 of suspension + garage time. Body roll angle isn't massively different on the video, just that the ground clearance is lower, so there is less daylight visible. I guess you did fit a set of polyurethane bushes at the same time? If the dampers and springs were factory original, then they would have been very suboptimal at 146k miles anyway. My feeling is that coilovers have done slightly less than nothing, compared to new standard springs and dampers. The lowering is always going to be handy on track though. Have the anti-roll bars been changed? Because the way it is driving, it seems like the new rear springs are too hard, and the ARB isn't stiff enough, reducing compliance and making it lose adhesion. That's not great, especially with an open diff. The loose back end is causing oversteer which is making the turn-in feel sharper than it really is. Bring on the cabin strip, limited slip diff, sticky tyres and custom map!

Also keep in mind we don't know the state of the original tires and its tread life. Add to the fact it had already been thrashed on the track a few times already I was personally was not expecting a massive improvement.The track is also very short. I'm sure over a longer track the gains will be more significant. If we compare with the IS 200 track project car: 1. Lightweight wheels and semi-slicks gained 0.85 over stock wheels and tires 2. Performance exhaust, coilovers & weight reduction gained 2.16 seconds over stock components 3. Performance brakes and buckets gained 0.84 over stock.

When you are going to do wheels and tyres are you going to show the difference that wheels and tires make independently or all at once? I feel like it would give a much better understanding to do them separately. Eg. Put a tyre like Michelin Pilot Sports, Toyo R888, Bridgestone Potenza ect. on the standard wheels to see how much difference good rubber makes. And then after that put the new wheels on with the same brand tyre to show how much difference less rotational mass and less unsprung weight can make a difference.
@billowytrots8366
@billowytrots8366 5 жыл бұрын
There's plenty of info regarding unsprung mass on the internet if you are interested. Alex's new wheels will have altered track width, tyre width and tyre profile, making it hard to tell exactly what effect the reduced unsprung weight would have. Though when we do see the results, I'd bet that a large majority of the improvement will be from the fresh tyres alone, if that's what you're wondering.
@shona5512
@shona5512 5 жыл бұрын
Cole Trickle I used the tyres purely as an example of a decent tyre, doesn't matter what brand it is as long as it's a good performance tyre. The whole point of them doing this bit by bit is to show how simple modifications can make improvements to your cars. He'll probably go faster with wheels and tyres on, but it doesn't show a definitive answer as to what actually improved performance. Was it the lighter wheel with less unsprung weight, was it the grippier tyre, was it the wider wheel improving weight transfer, was it the wider tyre allowing for more grip on the driven wheels. There are lots of variables and splitting it in two would have been a better help. But that's not likely to happen since all these episodes are already made.

Well, you can always go suspension>wheels>tires but when you buy a set of tires for these specific wheels it's done. He could have gone for a wheel+tire combo before the coilovers, but then the 4'' drop could be problematic if he's he got too big of wheels, in terms of fitting and geometry.
@kyleb5518

LeFatalpotato no real reason to do wheels, you loose a few lbs on a light set but you then loose momentum which is important coming out of corners, and even a quality wheel like a wolf race is made out of cheese compared to a wheel as quality as a bimmer oem wheel

Yeah, grip is one thing but Alex already got new tires(off vid), so, if they’re not planning any power mods and only things such as suspension, tires, weight reduction - a tune is the easiest way to get some extra power into the car. I know the older BMW engines are easy to tune without putting too much load, its not hard to achieve about +30kw and some extra torque.

this Eibach rep has the knowledge and explains it very well...but you're going to have to go to stiffer anti-sway bars and grippier compound tires to see a significant improvement....and those stiffer sway bars will result in much more 'head toss' .......you think a company with a Billion Dollar R&D budget can't tune your car's suspension for the best trade off between ride and handling ........ ? Also, aren't they almost $2,000 when you consider tax, and installation adds even more - that's insane......

Isn't an oversteering rear a sign that the springs are too stiff? I don't think the suspension changes actually made much of a difference, since they weren't that significant. Maybe go for BTCC style camber, stiffness and ride height and there may be greater improvements. And my goodness, those new rims are vomit-inducing.
@mariuszanfir2298
@mariuszanfir2298 5 жыл бұрын
That or not enough camber. Fortunately, e46s have camber adjustment on the rear, so that can be dialed in rather easily. Unfortunately, the camber is not adjustable on the front as well, unless you put in some camber plates or, the cheap/ghetto way, add some shims to the lower mounting point of the damper. I'm mentioning the front camber, as e36/e46 love a lot of camber. Ideally, for track use, you need to run something like -3 degrees which, this coilover setup surely doesn't provide.

Agree you need -3 or more on the front, -0.6 is horrible
@mariuszanfir2298
@mariuszanfir2298 5 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't know why it changed so little. Maybe the right height is not that different from stock? On my e36, when I installed the classical combo Bilstein + Eibach Pro Kit, I had something like -1.2 on the front. I did have the excentric M3 control arm bush, but I'm not sure that changes the camber in any way or if it actually improves something. I had huge caster afterwards, so I assumed it helped with that. The shop sent the wrong part and I went with it hoping that it will help :P

6:10 wait he is a suspension specialist and says to use spacers to get wider track, only did he forgot that if u use spacers you make eventualy the wishbone longer and so a longer arm. if you make a longer arm it can more easliy compress and so make the suspension softer and the car can roll more. its just better to use wider wheels with maybe a different offset. spacers are just the the most stupid thing to add to your trackcar. and dont forget to reinforce the subframe cause its still a e46.. bmw people understand me.

Also if you widen the track too much, you adjust the scrub radius, which most "tuners" haven't even heard of, to such an extent, that the car becomes undriveable. It won't want to go in a straight line and it's probably going to fly off the road and kill you under heavy braking.
@TheSilviu8x
@TheSilviu8x 5 жыл бұрын
yogummler, could you please elaborate on this one?
@yogummler
@yogummler 5 жыл бұрын
thesilviu silviu "An advantage of a negative scrub radius is that the geometry naturally compensates for split µ (mu) braking, or failure in one of the brake circuits. It also provides center point steering in the event of a tire deflation, which provides greater stability and steering control in this emergency." If you widen that track too much the scrub radius can become positive and then the car can become extremely dangerous under emergency braking

A low offset wheel is exactly the same as a higher offset wheel with a hub centric spacer (from your wheel hubs point of view). There is no difference at all. I run a square setup on my M3 and use a rear spacer to account for the difference in track width between the front and rear.

that car is not built to handle the load that those springs and shocks are putting on the spring perches and shock towers... they will crack or start to over stress the body of the car. you have to weld in reinforcement plates or the car will rip its self apart.

even my 1994 Ford Thunder Bird had the rear shock pop a base ball sized hole in the frame on the rear and it also cracked the rear fender, it is a type of fox body car... it has several plates welded into were the shocks pushed thru the body. but then that happened because of 360'000km of hard driving and potholes, plus i think the cut springs on it put an excessive load on the shocks causing them to rip out of the fender over time.
@janbroekmann3125
@janbroekmann3125 5 жыл бұрын
Arden Nielsen Most people only reinforce the strut towers once they do true coilovers in the rear. But here the springs and the dampers are separately so there isn't that much more stress on the strut towers.

Zan Macarol Vrabec Tyres already loosing traction through hard cornering, going stiffer will only put more force through the tyre causing even less control. Tyres with a stiffer side wall should of been fitted first before adjusting the the suspension to suite.
@zanmacarol7926
@zanmacarol7926 5 жыл бұрын
darren lynes yes but... You cancel that out with wider and grippier tyres. Not by aloving it to roll like a transit van.
@lloyd.8272
@lloyd.8272 5 жыл бұрын
Zan Macarol Vrabec You need weight transfer (body roll) to force the tyres into the road. The key is good control of the roll and having enough bump travel in reserve to keep the car settled if it encounters a bump mid corner. Totally different with track/ race cars that use aero to push the tyres into the road, they can afford to have very stiff set ups.
@jasperfk
@jasperfk 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Glover That’s the opposite of the truth though. If I car has less body roll there is more weight and momentum transfer through the tires, meaning less grip.

@marian-gabriel9518
@marian-gabriel9518 5 жыл бұрын
Brian Smith Because what he trusts is irelevant since he is not an expert on the topic and therefore cannot be trusted to make the best choices to show people how things are done...because they're, simply put, just not done this way. For example he said that those Pirelli tires are clearly overwhelmed by that extraordinary suspension setup, which is really not the case at all. Take a P1 and slam some P-Zeros on it and it will just work...(I just chose it for the P's :p ) But that's because of the fact that the P1's suspension setup is NOT just bolt on coilovers and expect it to just work on their own, or worse yet, expect the tires, no matter how good they are, to do all of the work...it just doesn't work that way yet many people think of these things as individual "mods" that work independently of the rest of the car and the experts regard them as "packages" meaning many pieces working together.
@ThungStudios

Eibach is a good brand though, there are other suspension brands that work similarly I'm sure. I like how that one had two different type of coils, some I've seen are sort of like that but basically it's a single coil but changes to spiral more near the top, which might work similarly.
