Video 2 - The Top 5 Best Place to Find Lots of Australian Coins:
• Where to find LOTS of ...
I've had a lot of people ask me for tips on noodling, which is another word for coin hunting. How can you find more coins, what should I collect, and what equipment do you need? There are lots of questions, and I won't be able to answer them all in this video, but these are my top 5 tips for noodling.
I'm just finalising the 2021 version of my Pirate Guide for Australian Coin Collecting which goes into a lot more detail on these topics.
But
in this video, I wanted to go through my top 5 tips for noodling.
1. Equipment.
I'd recommend a magnifying glass, so you can see the finer details of the coins, especially some errors.
I'd also recommend some white cotton gloves from the chemist.
Now this is optional - they can make it hard to hold onto coins, but it's also about protecting you from the coins if you're going through a lot of coins from circulation.
2. Build a crew.
People
often ask me: Damian, where to find rare and valuable coins? This is actually the wrong question - the correct question is "How do I find the coins I'm looking for?" The answer to this question is that you get other people to help you look. You see, coin collecting is a team sport - if you have people looking for coins for you, you've got much a higher chance of finding the coins you're after. Imagine
having
a group of people looking for coins and reporting back to you with what they find!
3. Join a facebook coin group.
While I tend to focus on Australian coins that are in circulation, there are several facebook coin groups where you can learn about a broader range of coins and notes.
There are coin clubs you can visit in most cities to find out more about coins and notes.
But another easier option is to join a Facebook coin group.
There is one online coin group I recommend for expanding your coin knowledge.
It's called the gravy train and is run by several people who are experts in both coins and notes from around the world as well as pre-decimal Aussie coins and even ancient coins.
The reason I recommend the Gravy Train is that they have folks who work hard to monitor conversations and ensure that things stay friendly and professional, so it's family friendly as well. I've put a link below the video.
4. Collection Policy.
One of the biggest problems with collecting anything is getting tempted and distracted by the shiny new objects. Have you ever had that frustration after buying something that it just doesn't fit in? While there is nothing wrong with collecting anything you like, it's really helpful to have an idea of which coins you prefer to collect, so it's easier to say no to new coins that don't suit your collection.
I'm sure this will save some marriages as well, since you don't have to justify as many new purchases.
So what does this mean for you? Basically you just need to take a few minutes to figure out what you like to collect... Is it Aussie coins with special designs? Bank Notes? Ancient Roman coins? Maybe it's even more specific - for example, just coloured Two Dollar coins. But having an idea of what fits into your collection means it's much easier to focus on the coins or notes that suit you best!
5. Grab a guide.
Finally, make sure to grab a guide of all the coins that fit in your collection, including errors, and how to recognise the various coins.
I have just finished the new 2021 version of my Pirate Guide for Australian Coin Collecting, and it has details of all the coins released into circulation including the new 2021 coins.
I'll send out details in a few days on this new guide, but if you'd like to find out more information, just visit:
