And the most important thing (to me) even though it's his show, Graham knows it's not about him. People watch for the guests and want to hear what THEY have to say or what THEY think. Almost every talk show host wants to be the funniest person on the show and that's just wrong. It annoys the crap out of me. Graham doesn't tell stories or jokes just to be funny he always does it to encourage conversation and that's why he's the best talk show host on television.

I liked Graham for that reason and he's my second favorite Late Show host. But I've been a naturalized citizen of the Colbert Nation since 2006 because Colbert is the exact opposite of that. His show is not a hugbox or a simple platform for guests to promote things and have fun. He uses his privilege and reach to ask the hard hitting questions and address the elephant in the room. His irreverence for the pretense of courtesy is what makes him stand out from the other hosts who thrive only on light fun and little to no substance. He earned this audience all the way back when he refused to hold back at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner while President Bush and the most powerful figures in politics, media, and industry were present to hear him tear them apart. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYjUq3-dechjaZI

Huge difference in format though. U.S. talk shows are edging ever closer toward 50/50 content vs advertising time. There is so little flow in most U.S. late night interviews, always a rush to get to whatever the actor/celeb is promoting before commercial break. The two you mention may be more famous in America, but that is just continuing the ignorant egocentricity already being called into question by the original comment. And richest? Oprah did not get that from being a talkshow host, she got that from other ventures like her publishing company and production company. Her wages as a talkshow host were famously low (by her own admission) and that was precisely why she pivoted into setting up those other companies. So yeah, she's a more famous and richer businessperson, but that is a strawman to this debate about the talkshows. @stephanieellis53992 жыл бұрын
@@barbarakauppi9915 out of curiosity, who do *you* think are the exceptions? There also needs to be allowances made because there is a significant cultural difference when it comes to this kind of show, I think. For better or worse, they aren't allowed this kind of freedom in talk shows in the States. They're used to question, answer, question, answer, joke, question, answer, lather, rinse, repeat on all the shows. I will agree with you, though, that many American guests don't appear to be that bright, but I also think that is a product of the Hollywood system to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator so even if the guest is really intelligent, they aren't used to being allowed to let it show.
@mikearchibald7442 жыл бұрын
@@barbarakauppi9915 The problem with the americans on is that they are usually movie stars, and you say the wrong thing in an interview and your career can be over. So usually its the really huge stars who don't really worry much who are the best guests. I don't get the feeling of pompous, but I see your point. In the US most media does nothing but talk them up, while british press is known for dragging people down, so those guests are more used to it. But that is largely true, on craig fergusons old show it was his interviews at first with guests in his audience that was usually the funniest part of the show. And they do that a lot too on nortons show.

People, the US may be big, but it's not the beginning and end of the world. @@evablaker4326 I suppose it might be a way to get the audience acquainted with the assumption that they may not know Graham's show. But personally (maybe because I know it and it's a very obvious detail) I find it contrived. I'd prefer the host to be straight: "because (for those who may not be aware) on your show alchohol is served regularly, right?". I also get the feeling that for any other topic they wouldn't have gone such a roundabout way, but since we're talking about alchohol (SHOCK! One of the things that I think helps a lot in Graham's show is the research they make so as to find stories or subjects that some guests have in common. That's how sometimes you get the guests to interact with each other, without the need of the host to interveen with questions or comments. In some clips you can even see Graham just leaning on his couch appreciating the conversation between them unfolding.

No offense to US talk show hosts (conan is my favourite) but you have no idea on how big Graham Norton really is. Nor do you know how experienced he is. Many including the top usa talk show hosts in usa speak to him like their senior. This when Graham can still talk like a young man in his twenties! Lastly, Im not from usa or uk but many of us from far away countries have been mesmerized and gladly accept him as the best ever EVER talk show host. He puts all his guests to such an ease and makes it so exciting for them and takes us viewers for a ride for a full 50 plus minutes! for seasons after season. ALL THIS WITHOUT ANY vulgar insults (other than a harmless joke) or hostility towards his guests or personalities/celebs/politicians not attending his show!. Hard to beat that. Very hard esp in usa (esp if you check how the talk show hosts and media are acting in usa in the last couple of years). Full respects to all talk show hosts but please, just please consider for a moment that there is a whole wide world (slightly bigger than usa) that has great talk show hosts like this man. He is an international treasure!, not just an irish treasure. Just consider this, i find conan funniest (even more than craig) but i undoubtedly without any offense admit Graham norton is the best.

Richard Clutterbuck I don't agree with what u r saying. I just think that his show on BBC is more toned down now and more about talking to guests in a professional manner. He also talks less and makes less jokes. Before he used to come out with hilarious stuff. It used to be funny when he used to do things like the the "do u like wood prank?" or the funny foreign foods names with Stanley tucci, or reading out the letter of the billionaire boy book ect.. and also when he used to engage the audience more like Chris pine and benedict cumberbatch and getting Liam Neeson to add his voice to someone's voice mail message. Also when he used to show objects to guests and bring up things about their pasts like an embarrassing modelling shoot. As well as showing things from the Internet. I dont think they use Internet much now after an incident where on a Google search it was showing " why is there a dead pakistani on my couch?" But mainly It don't feel he Jokes and talks as much compared to before. His humour is brilliant as well as his expressions and the way he reads things like the billionaire boy letter

That's why Craig Fergusons show was as good as Grahams, it was pretty much all improv. He used to tear up his scripts at the beginning of every show, and he was razor sharp on comebacks, like graham. His show with Ricky Grervais where he starts talking about Ricky's voiceover in the Muppet movie has to be the funniest period of a talk show I've ever seen. To be honest, this may be due to the BBC, no interruptions during the show! Jonathan Ross was pretty big before Graham, he was on BBC, he switched to ITV (where ads are allowed) and not as big anymore. Not taking away from his skills, also the fact that all the guests are on at near enough the same time allows them to chat and share relatable stories/experiences which makes the show what it is.

@@bennyceca I use to love Ross on the BBC as he acted like he had nothing to lose, then it all went a bit too scripted and "safe"and once he moved to ITV felt like a USA chat show.

Norton's show is the best chat show of all time simply because there's several a-list superstars at any given time and no censorship. They can swear as much as they like and he's the funniest interviewer.

"Super famous in the UK" AND famous on the continent (the rest of Europe) as well. Graham Norton outshines many of his American counterparts. He has great research on each of his guests, actually encourages them to talk -- more about personal anecdotes than pushing their latest project release, doesn't interrupt (keeps his ego much in check in other words), is good about showcasing new talent (particularly musical; he has a radio music program too), and appears to be a genuinely nice person. I can see why he and Stephen Colbert hit it off.

Really popular in Canada too. Graham's show is far superior to the talk shows on the American continent. Don't get me wrong, I like the Colbert, Kimmel monologues and Seth's "A closer look" is funny and informative. None of those should be missed but Graham's celebrity "interviews" are in a class all their own. Absolutely hilarious.

Graham is not only a great TV host, he is literally the most likable personality in TV, no matter what country you watch him from. He is so witty and smart, with a great sense of humor and also an impeccable sense of timing, and yet he never tries to impose himself as the center of attention or the star, even though he obviously is, and a huge one. He is such a charismatic guy, always delivering a great show for his hosts and his public. He is one of a kind.

The reason Graham Norton and his show are so beloved- is because it never feels forced. It feels like you’re watching a group of friends on a night in, drinking and swapping stories. Love you Graham!

The US has a lot going for it but Greatest fuck no, not even close, strongest yup, but there is more to a country that just having a massive millitary. One might note that Corden does the same thing, with multiple guests and host on the left and not behind a desk during the interviews..
@PoissonVisageStudios6 жыл бұрын
Not always, Jonathan Ross has sat on both sides, Paul O'Grady sat on the right, so did Alan Carr, and in the US, James Corden (I know he's English, but it's an American show) sits on the left. It's not to do with the country at all, they just sit whatever side the people who made the set like. Most just probably sit on the right in America because they seem to have so many more talk shows that it means they've got used to the host being on the right, so prefer the familiarity.
@artsyfartsy62867 жыл бұрын
American late night talk shows definitely could learn a lesson or two from Graham Norton.
@danielmullins99537 жыл бұрын
Nameless L I think it's more the American audience that's the problem, James Corden has went from Graham's style of interviewing to basically being Jimmy Fallon with his fake laugh.
