This was such a good show. It was, for me, a reminder of how people can be open with other and find common humanity even in the face of stark political disagreement. And how one can change one's own mind through those relationships and not be quite so hard or jaded.

Evan ` Its not that hard to find something you genuinely like about Pope Francis. The church has seen better days and the Pope is trying to take it out of its outdated views and into the modern world. Pope Francis' first order of business after becoming Pope was to fix the Vatican Bank which was plagued with corruption charges. He issued sweeping reformation. He's opened dialogue with other faiths (one of his best friends is a Jewish rabbi). And he is more accepting of the LBGT community than past popes even declaring “If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?".

"If you do this, you will damage the Papacy forever." In 1378, there occurred in Europe a split within the Catholic Church between two papacies. One was in Avignon, France, and the other was in Rome, Italy. Each pope had an interpretation of the Bible that indicated his papacy as the one that was true and the other's as the one that was false. Each pope excommunicated the other's followers for being so easily misled. This schism (known as the Western Schism) persisted until 1417 when it was resolved by the Council of Constance. Now did this schism _damage_ the Papacy? Perhaps. This question is beyond the scope of this comment. If it did, was the damage _permanent?_ No. That's ridiculous. I would go so far as to say that if a papacy can recover from _that,_ it can _easily_ recover from a pope _retiring._

Seriously the majority of people here know Pryce from *Game of Thrones* , not *Pirates of the Caribbean* !? 😮 I guess at 25, I'm anlready one of the older ones around here! ... 😆 Eitherway, brilliant guy!

The movie works well enough within the extended interview-conversation genre (think Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the "Before" trilogy, or, Richard/Nixon) and, to that end, it's helpful to know that the real meat of the encounter presented is largely imagined by the film's creators. The sympathies of this story (and it appears that Pryce's personal interest) work overwhelmingly in favor of elevating/honoring Francis, but Benedict is treated with enough courtesy to engender a degree of interest throughout. I think a kind of "diagnosis" of Benedict's failure(s) in leadership played central to the film: ultimately, he's found guilty of having fortified himself against reality by way of an empty intellectualism that masks his deeper fears of realizing a relational life founded on, in some essential way, transparency, vulnerability and tolerance. In this speculative context, then, a kind of willful deference to Francis is taken up by Benedict as a small act meant to communicate volumes (humility overcoming pride, naivete prayerfully seeking reform, etc.) and that becomes the angle by which traditionalists, conservatives, right-wingers and the like are implicitly invited - albeit, very late in the runtime - into the "crescendo" of the film. It didn't work for me, but Colbert didn't necessarily lie by calling it a "beautiful film." I'd be curious to see if a fellow KZbinr would be interested in any further dialogue?

I fell in love with him as Jumping Jack Flash. The movie came out in 1986. I first watched in 1990. I was 10. I don't think it's weird. The movie is really good for a ten-year-old like me. And Whoopi and Jonathan had an amazing on-screen chemistry.

Fun fact it wasn't cardinal Bergoglio who said those words about a pope not coming down from the cross - it was Australia's Cardinal Pell who is currently in jail for a crime he could never have committed. Check out Andrew Bolt, an atheist journalist who is leading the campaign to have Pell set free and exonerated. Now that will be a great movie.
