It's hilarious that Americans think "they won" WWII. It's actually quite insulting to the countries that stood up against the Nazi's long before you decided to help and that was only because the Japanese turned up at your doorstep. Also, the best Batman was played by a British actor. The current Superman is British. The previous Spider-Man was British and the current Spider-Man is British lol.

The US was in the midst of an economic depression and wasn't a colonial nation (the US's military was smaller than Romania's in 1939) with a massive standing military. WWII looked precisely like the same 90 billion other European Imperial wars that had infected Europe for centuries, and cost Americans needless deaths in WWI. This bullshit about "pure evil" wasn't fully known until 1945 moron, to wrap Britain up in righteousness is laughable considering this. If Germany was some sort of "pure evil" that had to be stopped in British minds, they wouldn't have engaged in the "Phoney War", shruggingly sacrificing Poland, and giving Germany a full head of steam before reacting. It's a clever way how you just ignore reality and the reactions and factors which actually determined the reactions of allies. The US was pouring aid to Europe, taking up defense of perimeter Europe and building up its forces well before (The US signed the Atlantic Charter IN 1941 BEFORE PEARL HARBOR MORON) Pearl Harbor dipshit. Your sense of history is ignorant and infantile. In fact, you essentially know nothing about WWII. The US gave as much as it could, as soon as it could. The US was in Africa in 1942 (American commanders wanted to assault Europe in 42, it was Churchill who, wisely, wanted the US to start in AFrica and cinch down on Germany towards Europe like a "closing fist"), it had already been sending aid, defending Iceland, building for war since Britain finally decided to fight after dithering during The Phoney War. It was Britain and France's moronic, botched, handling of Germany following WWI which created the very conditions which gave rise to the Third Reich and British and French dawdling in the opening stages of WWII which prolonged it

Contrary to general or public belief (often via Hollywood) no one country won the Second World War. The sacrifice was huge from all the allied forces. It was a team effort, no one life given was more or less valuable than the other. Britain was desperate for America's help and in December 1941 they joined the combined effort. Our great and grandparents generations paid a huge price for both world wars. It's sad to see Stephen's remark to Emily has been taken out of context (judging by the comments).

I see a lot of people commenting about the ww2 joke. As a Brit, I don't mind Americans thinking that. I just hope Americans remember Four things. ONE: America only entered the war after Germany declared war on them. TWO: Germany was developing a nuke, and it's target was going to be America, New York, and DC were the likely targets. THREE: Germany wanted peace with the UK, Hitler respected the British Empire, and wanted nothing more than to be Allies with GB, he would have made peace any day of the week. FOUR: America drove the UK to the brink of bankruptcy, we had food rationing for 10 years after the war ended as we had to sell everything we made to pay back the USA. Everything the US supplied to the UK with was sold at an inflated cost. The USA enjoyed a Golden age from the wealth made during the war. Make what ever conclusion you will of these facts, if you still think you saved us I wont argue.

mdevilb 1: I get that you are making some jokes. 2: 90% of my care comes from the fact that I think history is important. Sadly a lot of people these days don't pay enough attention to it. 3: Do you really think that your country is the best in the world, or are you just saying that to be patriotic. Honestly I don't think America is the best country, and I don't think my own country is the best either. But if you actually belive that then that must be nice for you, I am a little jelly of this opinion.

"Quite good" in Germany is actually a compliment. "It was quite good" is probably more of a compliment than simply saying "It was good". ;)
@christine36498 жыл бұрын
That depends entirely on how you translate it. If it stands for "ziemlich" then yes, it was more than just good. If it stands for "ganz" then it wasn't trash but it wasn't a masterpiece either. And if it stands for "wirklich" or "echt" then it was, indeed, excellent. It might still differ from region to region. Plus, you'd need to consider what intonation was used.
@luisebritta38698 жыл бұрын
I mean, of course it also depends on how you say it. An enthusiastic "Es war echt ganz gut" is likely worth more than a matter-of fact "Es war gut".
@christine36498 жыл бұрын
"Es war echt ganz gut" emphasises that you're surprised by how good it was. Please don't get me wrong, I don't mean to offend you. My point is, it's problematic to make such a general statement. It's a massive pet peeve of mine since I'm a translator and interpreter. There are a multitude of different versions you could use to translate "quite" and it all depends on context (and target group).
@ninjafruitchilled8 жыл бұрын
Same in Australia, we tend to understate things, so "it was quite good" or "it was pretty good", probably means "it was very good" :). Like if you ask someone how they are and they say "not bad", they mean "I am fine, thank you" :).

The interesting thing is that “quite” CAN be used as an amplifying adjective in British English, but isn’t always. Examples: “Quite wonderful” = “excellent” “Quite good” = “just above mediocre” “Quite lovely” = “very lovely” “Quite attractive” = “above average looking, but not stunning” “Quite” as an amplifier rather than diminutive is now associated more with the upper classes.

@Nilguiri8 жыл бұрын
Ariel Steinsaltz "There are many British accents". Yes, exactly, probably a lot more, but that does nothing to narrow it down though. She is from London, so her accent is more accurately described as an "English" accent which is generally understood to be an accent from south east England. More specifically it is an RP accent (a posh, south east English accent, like the Queen's). I know that there are many English accents, too, but at least you exclude Welsh, Irish and Scottish. Would you call a Belfast or a Glasgow accent a "British accent", too? I certainly wouldn't but they are just as "British" as Emily's accent. I admit that perhaps it's a bit pedantic to point this out, but I don't think many people in the UK would ever refer to a "British accent", it is far too generic. It's more of an American thing.

I think British people generally like Americans and like a lot of American culture. Of course, this is not in evidence in KZbin comments when it's all about the patriotism, which Americans are infinitely more convincing at. But the whole 'we saved you in WWII' thing . . . oh dear, Stephen, I hope that was satirical.
@snapcracklepop9718 жыл бұрын
It was! I'm fairly certain that most Americans are just joking when they make comments like that.

Well, I'm from Europe and can honestly say I've heard the "well, you're not speaking german because of us" or "we saved you in WWII" more than once. Which in itself is funny because my country wasn't involved in either of the world wars. However, I do think in this case it was just a joke so no biggie.
@jmsta20118 жыл бұрын
I hope he was joking. I hope that while it's something that Americans are taught to think (patriotism and all that) most people know it isn't entirely true. Helped, sure, but I think we were doing OK already...

TheEpicGameHub Lucky the British don't have their own voting fiasco in the recent past as well as a history of fucking up the world, otherwise that comment may look slightly myopic :p

I know it was said in a joke way but it really annoys me when Americans says "we saved you". No no no. You HELPED DEFEAT Germany. America only joined the war once their country was attacked and in danger. Don't go and take all the glory. No country would ever be able to defeat a country in war alone. Not even America.
@ViolentFEAR6 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the US could have beaten Germany alone. It's just not what happend.
@medievalfantasynetwork78686 жыл бұрын
We possibly could have defeated Germany alone but would not have had enough motivation to do so since it was Japan mainly that attacked us... though Germany did sink some American ships with their "U-boats" aka submarines. That might have risen to the level of a war declaration at some point if Japan had not decided to hit Pearl Harbor for no good reason.

The US was never in any danger from Germany. France surrendered to the NAZI's, the Soviets used to be their allies and The UK was perfectly happy to give them Poland so when you whine like a bitch because the US didn't' save your ass sooner that's just your self hate for not helping Poland. The Fact is France and the UK had it coming. Without their reparations the NAZI's would have never happened.
