I feel Stephen Merchant's size pain but in a very specific spot: my feet. I'm 5' 11" tall, so not huge. But I wear size 13 shoes. Imagine how often I've heard, "I'm sorry, sir. We don't have that shoe in 13. Would you try a 12?" REALLY?? Is there a level of hell deeper than wearing shoes one size too small??

I can relate to that. For me it sometimes works as my feet are too wide for a regular size 10 so I need a "10 wide" but with some shoe brands an 11 works out too, probably hence the question.
