So I’m polishing the counter of the shop and this kid from Bronx Science comes in and says, “Hey mister…I’ve been selected to train as a safety for the Bronx Science Labrats. I need a book by a champion safety.” So I pull out a book ‘Being an award-winning safety’ and read the first paragraph for him: Safety, historically known as a safetyman, is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage near the waterboy and his crew. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. While American 11-player formations generally use two safeties, Canada (and thus also NH) uses 12-player formations and generally have one safety and two defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game. They also have both a waterboy and poutine boy. The safety’s most important support player is the best friend of the waterboy. A great film to study this particular support role is the Academy Award-worthy film ‘The Waterboy’ starring Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler. And I think…oh no…another utter krapp fail fraud book by Schneider, but the kid is half out the door, so I ring my supplier and a guy answers and I say, what’s with sending me all of these Rob Schneider bs books man! And the guy says, “Rob Schneider is a movie god and an NFL genius” and I think, I know that voice, and I say, is that you Schneider? And he hangs up on me. WTAF dude?!
