Between her role on 'The Big Bang Theory' and a degree in neuroscience, Mayim Bialik is as qualified as anyone to diagnosis Stephen as 'nerd' or 'geek.'

...are you *sure* he challenged her? I mostly just saw him interjecting a lot of mindless banter in between obvious attempts at humour as he bailed himself out of topics that he'd made too awkward to continue with, then giving her shamefully weak prompts for the next topic which she still managed to expound eloquently upon. The only way I'll concede that he's "challenging" her is by forcing her to feel awkward and switching the topic every few seconds to see how quickly she could handle rapid-fire complex topics (and stupid questions) without getting flustered.

@Simon Belanger Yeah, I think Mayim stymied him more than once but being the clever person that Colbert is, he held his own....if barely, especially the obviously clumsy segue to mention her book at the end. But still, all and all, it was a fun exchange to watch.

@QuirksOfTay
@QuirksOfTay 6 жыл бұрын
Are you serious? It didn't seem like that at all. I don't think Mayim meant to imply that 'geeks' aren't smart - she just said that they aren't necessarily geniuses like in TBBT. Also, I hope you understand the irony in your last statement, especially since Mayim is an actress as well as a scientist, so she is obviously 'cultured' when it comes to media - she even said she likes LOTR. From the way she described it I think she would classify herself as both a 'nerd' and a 'geek', and would think neither are bad or weird.

Geek: May the force be with you. Nerd: May the force be an influence on a body or system, producing or tending to produce a change in movement or in shape or other effects. Basically a geek is obsessed with something fictional like Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games, etc. or with something close to fiction, like a good book that is actually realistic. A nerd is someone who is obsessed with the real world, such as history, math, science, literature, even the art of dancing. As long as you are obsessed. E.g. a dancer may not qualify as a nerd, but if you look up facts about types of dances, memorize moves, find out interesting things, physics, history of a certain dance type, etc., you are a nerd.

After watching this video I can understand why my wife has been talking about Mayim for twenty years, "she's so pretty, she's so smart, she's so funny..." And why she stayed married to a nerd/geek.

I never understood why they attempted to portray her as unattractive on TBBT. Sure she was unattractive on Blossom, but she was hot on TBBT from day one.

When my 7 year old heard that Sheldon had coitus, she confused the word with 'goiter' (which her uncle had at one point), and commented that they need to " fire the makeup guy, 'cause Uncle Gary had that, and I couldn't stop staring at it!"

IMAGINE all the celebrity world would consisting of Mayims Bialiks. What a great generation would nowadays teenagers become if only they would watch this kind of role models instead of Kardashians on daily basis. I am a teenager and I am proud of calling Mayim my role model, however I prefer maths and IT over neuroscience.

She has pretty much the same description of nerd vs. geek as I do. I always said that a nerd will talk for hours about the science behind a sci fi show, while a geek will talk for hours about the character motivations and metaphors of their favorite sci fi show. Of course there is a lot of crossover.
